WCS is awesome!

At my last salsa social a couple of West Coast Swing dancers performed for us just to familiarize us with the dance anyways I thought it was so cool and energetic I loved it anyways the only part that confused me a little was the fact that they danced to Christina Aguilera's "Can't hold us down" is this the music that its usually danced to? I thought it would have been swing music?

That's great that you thought WCS was great to watch. My next routine is a WCS, so good to know that people who have never seen it before are impressed.

As to the style of music, I usually find that dancing does not fall into particular "styles" of music. If you want to be traditional with music choice, go right ahead, but there are plenty of other music styles that you can also fit with certain dances. To me, it's all about the beat, not the music around it.

Different types of swing uses different types of music. Since West Coast is less bouncy than other swing dances, it often uses music that are less swing.

Can't hold us down by Christina A is a song with a very nice steady beat. So has many other hip hip songs. And that makes them very suitable for other types of swing too, like the Lindy Hop.

Both Lindy and WCS are very 'complete' dances in the sense that learning to do these dances you also learn to dance in general. Even if swing music is what we (Lindy) usually dance to, It's possible to dance to a lot of different music with a basis in Lindy/WCS.

Man! I was flipping radio stations in the car yesterday, when I ran across some George Thoroughgood and the Destroyers that just made me wanna WCS. " I drink alone ..." Cool! 8)

What's that? Blues? Rock? Whatever it is, it's perfect for a slow and slinky WCS, IMHO. :D
