I just bought our VIP ticket packages!

Registration and hotel reservations up next.
(Oh, and maybe some practice? Seeing as how we have a brand new samba routine, that might be a good idea.)

Who else is planning to go?

DETAILS: January 15-17, 2010.

LOCATION: Manhattan Center.
(VERY easy to get to from Penn Station for those coming from out of town...and Newark Liberty Airport offers connections to the train line.)

The schedule won't be posted until much closer to the actual event, but if you look at last years schedule it will probably be pretty similar (don't have it in front of me right now, otherwise I'd tell you when it was last year.)

2009:
Quarter-final: 3:36
Semi: 4:00
Final: 4:17

Does it a little bit scare you that it was not hard for me to find last year's program...or, indeed, MAC programs going back to 2006? I may have a teeny, tiny packrat problem. (Hangs head in shame.)

I thought of being a vendor there given that the comp is literally 3 streets from my house.. but don't like vendor space there.. But if anyone needs standard only gown during the comp they can certainly come over..

OK, have never competed in a USADance comp before.
Current plan is to dance Gold, MOS, and Novice or Pre-Champ Standard.
My understanding is that syllabus dancers cannot wear costumes. What does that mean for the guy - no tailsuit; white shirt/black tie (no colors)? That's the impression I get. Also cannot understand age categories - seems like kids can dance more than 1, and seniors can dance more than 1, but adults cannot?
kinda confuzzled

Joe
11-23-2009, 06:24 AM
The rule book is there for a reason...whether or not it's easily comprehensible is another matter.

Succinctly:

Syllabus dancers may not wear costumes, although MOS dancers may. You may only dance two consecutive levels, so Gold and Novice, or Novice and Prechamp. MOS is a free event, no level restrictions. Adults may only dance one age category because it is the attractant category--the other ages dance up or down towards Adult.

and123
11-23-2009, 10:07 AM
Succinct is good. Thank you for doing that.

The registration form says, in regards to age levels, that:
"Competitors may enter the next higher age level (USA Dance Rulebook § 4.5.5.2.3)."
-- except that section does not seem to exist!

And in my particular case, while I have crossed the bridge into the Senior category, my partner has not yet. I believe you dance at the age level of the younger partner in this situation, so we as a couple would not be eligible to dance both Adult and Senior, correct?

I've also had the unfortunate experience of entering comps where they claimed to be following the Almighty Rulebook, and it was definitely not the case. Wanted some feedback from those who have danced the MAC.

Again, thank you.

Its actually 4.6.3 in the current rule book. Sorry about the confusion and I'll make sure that the information on the MAC website is corrected.

You are correct, in order to dance Senior I both members of the couple must be 35 within the year (we go by birth year, not the actual birth day.)

We try to follow the rulebook pretty consistently :)

Looked for videos of the MAC 2009 on youtube, and found dancers in Silver and Gold Standard/Smooth wearing: gloves, scarves/floats, shiny fabric, and even saw a tailsuit.

Not purposely trying to be a PITA, just trying to understand what is allowed. For instance, I have a shiny satin practice skirt, but the rules seem to forbid this. I'd like to be able to use something I already have on hand rather than purchase something new for the event.

Today is December 12th. 20 DAYS until regular registration ends! I know in a lot of people's minds, that's donkey's years, but remember that the holidays are in there, and the vast majority of you aren't going to want to do your registration on New Year's Eve.

Do it!!!
(I have a special investment in making sure the east coast NQEs have good attendance, as I doubt we'll make it to Nationals this year.)

and123
12-12-2009, 09:34 AM
OK, time for another dumb question. I think it may have been alluded to before, but cannot find it.

So a couple must dance in a NQE in order to attend Nationals. But must the couple dance the same event(s) at the NQE as they potentially would at Nationals? If they compete in, say, only Latin at NQE, can they dance Rhythm, Standard, Smooth at Nationals?

19DancerBabyLin
12-12-2009, 10:04 AM
Nope, there are no correlations between what you can dance at Nationals compared to what you've danced at an NQE. You don't even have to be dancing at the same level... ie you can do Silver Standard at NQE and end up doing Bronze Rhythm at Nationals.

I don't really know what the reason for this is. My rationale is that NQEs are used as a "weeding out" process... i.e. if someone is a new competitor who doesn't understand the level system, and goes to a competition having registered for Novice when he really should have been dancing Bronze... helps make Nationals run smoother when everyone knows what they are doing.

1) the rules get worse ever year

2) senior syllabus may wear costumes

Which IDSF comp, the only one I see on the calendar is in Byelorussia on the 17th and ones in Spain the weekend before? I never said people were using it as an excuse, I just said I don't like people telling me it's the same weekend as the MAC, because it's not. I completely understand people wanting to go over and get settled and ready for the comp, but don't tell me that it's the same weekend, say you're going over early to get ready for it...

THE UNIVERSAL OPEN TO THE WORLD BALLROOM & LATIN TROPHIES 2010
Lakeside Country Club, Frimley , Surrey

Not everyone has a lot of money to travel often overxseas for comeptitions. When you are going to UK, you want to dance all possible events. This competition is on sunday. Most couples from US dance this event every year, if they go to UK open.

I think it is wonderful that some people want to go to England early.
I think it is wonderful that some people choose not to, or aren't going to the UK Open in the first place.

I do not think this is a topic worth arguing over, especially since Mandicraft was stating something that is simply a factual clarification, i.e., that the dates are not in direct conflict.

VIP packet--check
Registration--check
USA Dance renewal--check (not that it expires before MAC, but while it's on my mind)

...but had not reserved a hotel room!

Just reserved one, but had a slightly confusing conversation with reservations. The very nice woman I talked to seemed to indicate that the MAC block for Friday was sold out...but then she booked me at the $139/night rate for that night anyway.

So I don't know if it matters, but I thought I'd mention it.

Hey this is kind of self serving but I also try to be there for the dancers where possible. Last year I vended at this competition and am on the fence this year. It is a very difficult venue to get in and out of.
I would love some feedback from people as to whether they do much shopping at an event like this. I have to make a decision this weekend as to whether to attend and what to provide.
Feel free to reply or PM me.
Thanks.

Champ latin is looking particularly weak. Last year's wasn't too strong either, but there were enough legit champ couples to at least make a semi of championship quality. This year even the final will have prechamp couples in it, it would seem.

There is still a week to go until the deadline, and registration can change a lot between now and then. Most people wait until the very last minute, and even after the very very last minute to register. So the final listing may be very different from what it currently is. Which means that people shouldn't be looking at the current listing to decide to dance at the MAC. Just sign up and all will be great.

Is it just my impression that the champ latin couples seem to procrastinate the most with their registration? Maybe it's because the champ standard dancers have more clothes to put on? ;-)

In my experience latin dancers tend to be more disorganized than standard dancers... my first coach, who was an American and a ten-dancer, warned me about that... and I have found it to be largely true. Although I will note that my two current coaches are both Russian, and the latin coach is WAY more dependable than my standard coach, who once tried to book me on a) his wedding day, and b) Yom Kippur (he's Jewish and I am as well). It was a great day.

i have noticed this too... of course we are speaking COMPLETELY generally here as I know several disorganized standard people and very organized latin people... but broadly speaking I have noticed this trend too.. even in pro showcases or interactions with judges (will not mention names). Again, COMPLETELY speaking on general terms. If this is not a sensitive topic, it would be interesting to branch off into its own thread and discuss why this seems to be the case.

Historically, does anyone know around when Adult Latin starts on Friday? I know the session starts at 3:30 pm but Adult Latin is listed third so I think it starts a bit later unless they interleave it with the Youth Standard and Adult Smooth heats. Just trying to figure out the best time to arrive in NYC.

If we are talking adult championship latin, in 2009,
10:10--quarter-final
10:51--semi-final
11:30--final.

If you are looking for the novice or pre-champ, I can get you that info from last year too.

That in no way necessarily means that this year will be the same, though I will say that I also looked at the 2007 program insert, and adult championship latin also started at 10:10 with a quarter-final then. So while I would plan to get there plenty early, I think it would probably be safe to say that champ won't start at 3:30.

ETA: Just went on the MAC site, and both Champ Latin and Champ Standard look like they have 25 registrants a piece. So is that a 1st round or QF situation?

Well, hopefully the organizers of MAC know better than to put crowded heats on the floor. I am thinking with 39 couples, they should have at least 3 heats (4 would be nicer:)) if everyone shows up... The floor in that ballroom isn't huge.

I meant the pain of multiple rounds;)

IIRC, it's a standard 40x80 floor...

Ithink
01-05-2010, 09:15 AM
"Standard" doesn't mean unusually big to me where abnormal heat rules would apply. For example, Holiday Classic in Vegas's floor is VERY long and is bigger than a "standard" floor so it could take more than a semi-final's worth of couples. A "standard" floor cannot, IMO. MAC's floor cannot.

A long-time lurker coming out with the question for all you knowledgable folks :)
My son is dancing in MAC for the first time (he is 9, so , hopefully, not the last) His heat has been listed on the schedule at 4:43PM.It was listed with the same time under the entries on o2cm as well. However today it started coming up with 11PM heat time on o2cm and still the same time on the schedule.
I hope it is a mistake because I cannot imagine having Pre-teen II bronze dancing after Jr. champ round...For whatever reason, only his age group in Bronze and silver is affected..I know there is always somebody here who knows the answer, thanks in advance :p

The schedule looks quite daunting:( There is a two-hour break between PC Standard 1/8th of final and quarterfinal and between the quarter and semi and then an hour in between semi and final... Please tell me that you will have the callbacks available early so people know their fate and don't have to wait for hours to find out!

Also, please consider running the Champ quarterfinal earlier so those of us doing both PC and C don't have to drop it. As it stands now there is an hour and a half break between PC 1/4 and C1/4 but only one event separates C1/4 and PC1/2:(

I know it's likely this schedule was a result of a lot of planning so if it has to stay, I understand. But it doesn't hurt to inquire, right?:)

jjs914

Last year, I think callbacks were on the screen almost immediately after we walked off the floor after our smooth semi. That was convenient!

Adding to that, how committed are the organizers to running the comp as scheduled? I am hoping PC standard dancers that expect to make the first cut will hot have to remain in costume in the ballroom for 2 hours in case someone decides to run the next round significantly ahead of schedule.

Daphna
01-12-2010, 10:20 AM
The call backs will be available almost immediately, so those couples who didn't make the next round :( will be able to change out of their costumes and not wait in wet and sweaty clothes for 2 hours.:applause: We will be running the schedule as close to the posted times as possible but remember that you need to be in the ballroom ready to dance a 1/2 hour prior to the posted time. We will not run an event more than a 1/2 hour early.

We really tried to take into consideration everyone's schedule of dancing, however, with so many people dancing multiple events, multiple styles and multiple age levels it was impossible to make the perfect schedule and still be done before 3am.

If there are any significant changes to the schedule prior to Friday, we'll let you all know.

Egoist

I see that warning in all competitions but I believe that it only applies to the first round of your event and not to subsequent rounds (usually the subsequent round times are not posted). Your post above, however, leads me to believe differently, i.e. that NONE of the rounds for ANY event will be run more than 1/2 hour ahead of the scheduled time.

I appreciate how hard it is to schedule the comp and make everyone happy so props to the scheduling team.

"A practice floor will be made available at the MAC to competitors. However, if anyone is looking for extra practice space, off premises, Basic Ballroom is one block directly north of the Manhattan Center, and the studio has kindly agreed to reduce floor fees for anyone competing at MAC. If you would like to practice there, on their spacious brand new floor, present your competitor number and your floor fee will be just $10 per couple per hour (regularly $14 per couple per hour). When there's invigilation, International style gets it. American style can be difficult to invigilate because of the number of different syllabi. In International, comps tend to specify only ISTD.

Some awesome surprises, like Championship Latin starting from a first round! Got to see some couples I wasn't expecting to see in Youth Latin too.

Happy 20th, MAC! Hope there will be MANY more!

I assume he means it was a straight final, and some couples scratched.

p.s. congrats!

I'm just living vicariously through the o2cm results pages. But I've heard from some that the after midnight friday scheduling of the event was really problematic for those who had jobs not in NY to work on Friday.

Oh yeah, I know. That was a sad question mark because we always want to know where everyone else is too! Wishing there had been more awesome people to dance with. But I did hear from others that they just couldn't stick around so late.

This was our first comp experience (as spectators). We attended the last half of the Saturday afternoon session and the first half of the Saturday evening session. Our observations as first-timers:
Great dancing at all levels! Congratulations to all of the participants.
Nothing to compare it with, but everything seemed well organized and the atmosphere was more friendly than we had somehow expected it to be. I overheard some of the college kids describing the team match as the best time ever.
Nature being what it is, I was prepared for the contrast in athleticism between the adult and senior groups, but I would have expected the adult group to be at peak form. However, it was really some of the youth competitors who took my breath away. Need to sign up the kids for lessons right now!
Very surprised at the frequency of collisions among dancers at the highest levels. Is this common? I presume the floorcraft is factored into the rankings.
Thanks to all of the dancers and organizers for a wonderful time.

Congrats to all the organizers, volunteers and officials at the 2010 MAC for a job well done! We attended the MAC for the first time this year -- as spectators Friday night and as competitors (syllabus standard) on Saturday. We really enjoyed the weekend! Everyone was friendly and helpful and the venue was absolutely spectacular!

The only thing that could have made it better for us (other than dancing better ;-)) would have been to have a video vendor at the comp (we really count on having our 'game film' for review). Next time we'll bring our own camera, 'cause we'll definitely be back!

Again, thanks for all the hard work that went into making it a great weekend!!!

Its often hard to get a video vendor at a comp without granting them exclusivity, and private video is a rather treasured part of usa dance comps for many couples, so do bring your camera next time.

When there's invigilation, International style gets it. American style can be difficult to invigilate because of the number of different syllabi. In International, comps tend to specify only ISTD.

My dp and I got invigilated in syllabus American silver rhythm, even though we've never been told at any other competition that the moves weren't silver. We did sliding doors in rumba without hand-hold, and also I did a fan kick instead of a low ronde in another part (apparently, my leg went "too high" for silver). Luckily, they were both an easy fix.

Not in Am/Am rhythm. I've definitely seen people get called out on moves at the collegiate comps though. But, like I said, wasn't a big deal, I was just kinda surprised that those moves were "illegal." Had a great time at the comp...very well run and organized. Congrats MAC organizers!

Ugh it was not fun having to give my presentation at our lab meeting this morning after only 3 hrs of sleep on Fri and Sat each, and a quick nap on the bus ride home on Sun... (rest of Sun night was spent working on said presentation). Not super-volunteering again next yr! (I say that now, but we all know I'll be back... haha I dunno whether to laugh or cry at that)

Some highlights of the weekend for me:

working the VIP section and starting a DF cheering section with CCM for ithink and egoist, katarzyna (and alex), and of course our favorite male champ 10-dancer ;-)
being bummed initially at not being able to compete head-to-head with syncopationator, then being relieved moments later for not having done that so I can pretend I wouldn't have gotten my butt kicked by him
seeing Mandicraft and Meagan buried waist deep in yelling and screaming junior MAC competitors
feeling my jaw drop watching 2 junior II champ latin girls do their thing... I need lessons from them

Yay!!! Glad that my first MAC experience was MAC's 20th birthday!! Many anniversaries for us to celebrate together!

Bummed I didn't get to meet all you other DFers who were there. Why didn't we have a DF meetup??!!

Well the 20th Anniversary is in the history books now and after 16 hours of sleep on Monday and another 5 or so last night, I'm starting to feel human again....

It was a really great year at the MAC. I'm proud to say that we raised enough money to give out over $10,000 in scholarships, we had more than 1000 competitors and had what I think was the largest (and craziest) Junior MAC ever.

I hope everyone that attended really enjoyed themselves and to those that couldn't we really hope to see you next year.

If anyone has any suggestions, comments or ideas for improvements, we would love to hear them. I know a lot of people have been posting on here and I love hearing how much everyone enjoyed the event, but if there is something you would like to let us know about and don't want to post it here, please feel free to PM me!

The only thing that was difficult as a competitor was having to wait for almost two hours between rounds, as I think I mentioned in this thread before when the schedule became available. One hour between the semi and the final was OK, but the two hours between the previous two cuts was a bit painful, in several respects. You get stiff and, even though it was warm in the ballroom, your body gets "cold" and the round following become more painful than necessary:(

I suppose that's how it has to be when the event is so large and there are so many heats but you did ask for suggestions/comments:)

Wow, the invigilator was seemed to be strict during the syllabus standard events. Was it this way in the rest of the syllabus events?

Syllabus latin was invigilated during semis/finals and YC announced during awards that placements had been affected by this.

I volunteered Friday doing some set up and run around, saw CCM+CCP on the VIP stage, had a rough round of standard on Saturday, and I think the highlight of the weekend was during team match watching the 10 dance junior couple (from the Manhattan Ballroom (Manhattan Dance?) team) doing open quickstep with the lead blindfolded (yes there were other couples on the floor).

kathyt: that was so fun to watch! My partner and I walked into the ballroom after a 5-hour bus ride to NYC and were instantly de-stressed by watching the team match and especially the aforementioned blindfolded quickstep. There were so many close calls but that couple just totally lucked out into getting around the floor unscathed!

Unfortunately, collisions do sometimes happen, even with the best of the best. You'd have to talk to judges for the official word on how they mark (some thread exists on that) but floorcraft is part of the package.

Thanks to all of the dancers and organizers for a wonderful time.

As far as I know noone officially taped it (the camera that was supposed to be taping at that time for MAC committee purposes was out of batteries)...

As far as unofficially I'm sure someone taped at least parts of it although I don't know if anyone had quite as good of a view as I did ;)

I'll definitely be keeping my eye out though so I'll let you all know if one pops up!

I've seen three or four people with big sets of albums up on Facebook. Igor should have his up sometime soon (http://www.ofenbakh.com). We also had two other photographers doing some documenting for us and once they are ready we will let everyone know where to find their pictures can be viewed. Other than that, I think it's just a matter of hunting around on Facebook.

As Amanda already said there are at least two photographers that were working on MAC photos that are currently editing and all that...so their photos should be available soon (and not just on facebook)

There is at least one other photographer (you know the ones with the big fancy cameras haha) who was there for the evening sessions that will have photos up relatively soon and they should be on a public site (if they are I'll post link when that happens)

There are at least two large groups of photos (with good cameras haha) that have gone up on facebook that I can think of (one of those belonging to a previous partner of mine ;)) but I don't want to post their names so I guess PM me if you want to try and friend them?

I think they also have more Latin photos than standard so that may have lowered your chances as well :(

The two photographers who were "documenting" the MAC are still editing but combined it sounds like they took well over 6000 photos so lets hope you made at least one!!

And of course we all still await THE CCP :p
