I'm trying to buy a present for someone, and thought that a book on the history of salsa dance and music would be perfect. Problem: I don't know which books are quality. Can anyone in the Forum help?
Thanks thanks thanks :D

Sorry Volleybgrl, have no idea what book to recommend. Maybe we can convince Boriken or Salsarhythms to write one??

This is the only book I have bought so far on the subject- In case the link I included doesn't work, its called Musica: The Rhythm of Latin America: Salsa, Rumba, Merengue, and More its by Sue Stewerd with the preface by Willie Colon. You can find it on amazon. Not a perfect book but not a bad book either, It does a really nice job of going into the history of the music and tracing its path here to the states. The amazon link is http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0811825663/qid=1086351998/sr=1-1/ref=sr_1_1/104-4528829-9443928?v=glance&s=books
Take a look and also look at the other book bought by people who bought this book section- it has some more suggestion as well.

How about "The Latin Beat: The Rhythms and Roots of Latin Music, from Bossa Nova to Salsa and Beyond" by Ed. Morales, or "The Latin Tinge: The Impact of Latin American Music on the United States" by John Storm Roberts. I heard about these, but haven't personally read them. Has anyone?

A friend got me a copy of 'Cuban Fire: The Story of Salsa and Latin Jazz' by Isabelle Leymarie. Hard work to read from cover to cover but an excellent book to dip into and well worth a look.
