In a recent comp my friend was penalized by the invigilator for doing a reverse wave during his silver syllabus event. So, in discussion afterwards, we were not quite sure what makes the difference between a “Reverse Wave” and a “Continuous Reverse Wave” in Foxtrot. It seems there must be a specific ending element for considered a “Reverse Wave” rather than a “Continuous Reverse Wave”. We also discussed whether the “Reverse Wave” is in the Silver Syllabus or the Gold and whether the “Continuous Reverse Wave” is in the Gold Syllabus or is it Open material. Your help in clarifying this is appreciated.
A syllabus reverse wave is a single three step combo, typically done after a reverse turn ended backing wall. For the man, RLR.
The continuous (extended) reverse wave includes not just the reverse wave but the back feather, and is not included in the syllabus as a combo.

Reverse wave (essentially a combination of a foxtrot reverse turn followed by a back threestep) is silver syllabus in ISTD. Continuous wave is open.
I don't see how a reverse wave would have been invigilated in a silver syllabus event, unless the official thought it was something else.

Until quite recently, the " full " wave was a bronze figure.. it was modified to the 3 step version...

Do you know to when the current ISTD technique book dates? I bought my copy in 2002 but it has no publication or copyright date in it anywhere.

yeah, we got the "You can't do that" warning at a couple of comps last year, even though we saw other couples dancing it in syllabus also. Invigilator was so non-helpful as to clarifying what we *could* do that we ended up dancing just feather and three for the following rounds....

Specifically, a back feather is not a syllabus legal follow from the sixth step of the reverse wave. Good choices would be the written heel pull ending or alternatley an impetus.

Not precisely.. but I will check...

You must be referring to geological time, because it's been at least 15 years that the continuous wave has been out of syllabus. :)

Some searching suggests the idta syllabus may have/have had an extended reverse wave. But US am/am comps tend to be istd only.
The dvida syllabus, which includes elements of both, has the wave in bronze, and the extended wave in gold. At the US championships in Orlando, this syllabus was posted as allowable, but I really can't imagine anyone really using the wave in bronze, though perhaps more likely the extended wave in gold.

I dont know why you wouldnt imagine the rev. wave used in bronze... in many ways the partnership dynamics are easier than the forward version.
Also, the very popular bronze floorcraft phrase commonly called reverse, check, and weave actually gets its istd legality from a note on the reverse wave page, rather than deriving from the reverse turn.

We (DP and I) follow the DVIDA syllabus, and our Bronze foxtrot routine includes the reverse wave. :-)
It can be a beautiful and very expressive move.

Correct. An old version of IDTA does have ERW.
And I love the ERW. Doing it and watching the superstars do it.
