View Full Version : I'm not orange!

This may have been covered before - if so, I apologize.
Does anyone have any suggestions for a tanning product that is more brown- than orange-colored? I'm wearing a costume in a few weeks that I need to be tan for, but that would look horrible with an orange-tinted tan . . . I'm pretty typically white (ie not particularly pink or olive or anything), and I do tan decently when I spend time outside, so it's not that I just look wierd when I'm tan.
Any help?

Perfect resource for you:
Sunless.com (http://www.sunless.com)
To me, it sounds like you've been trying self-tanners that are too dark for your skintone, producing oranginess. Try a light-medium formula, and you should be fine. One product that I can think of is L'Oreal Sublime Bronze lotion in light-medium (I think Walgreen's has a coupon if that's in your area--perhaps google for self-tanner coupons?).
Take a good look through sunless.com, it's an awesome resource for selftanning. Also, you can go to makeupalley.com (you do have to register to use some parts of the site, but they won't spam you). The product reviews should be extremely helpful.[/url]

I swear by a product called Fake Bake. It was recommended to me by another dancer and I love it. I ususally use it for two days, sleeping in it overnight, and then if I want a deep competition tan I'll use Pro Tan for two more days.
The Fake Bake lotion is the one I use. It has a nice tint so you can see where it has been applied and I haven't had any problems with streaking or oranginess. I have pale skin and was very happy with the results of this product.
I can use Fake Bake all over, including my face. But, I never use Pro Tan on my face since it has a high alcohol content and drys out the skin.
You can buy both the Fake Bake and Pro Tan various places online. I would do searchs and shop around for the best prices. It is also listed on the website provided above. sunless.com. But there are others that have cheaper prices.
Hope this helps.

Another useful source of info. is a thread called Do competitors need a tan? (http://www.dance-forums.com/viewtopic.php?t=943&highlight=tan) Lots of useful information there. :)

It's a bit pricey to do on a regular basis, but for a one time deal I was extremely pleased with the results of getting a Mystic Tan.

I tried Mystic Tan. The concept is great, but in the end I found it to be too costly. Not nearly as much color as I get from lotions.
The best lotion for my skin type has been the L'Oreal Sublime medium. Very natural color, tinted, no streaking, and dries fast.

Yep, the price for Mystic Tanning is rather steep, but for a one time deal I found two coats of the level 3 to be quite dark and 100% even.

There is a package deal I got by purchasing 30 sessions of Mystic Tan, I forget what the cost ended up being, but it was maybe 50% less.
I only need one session of level 3 for each competition weekend, so I am set for the rest of the year. And yeah the coat if very even, much more so than Steve trying to paint me with pro-tan 4 times before a comp.

Good point Larinda. For Ballroom/Smooth one cote should be just fine. the two cotes I mentioned were more for Latin/Rhythm.
(...although individual coloring and personal taste will factor in as well.)

I just called a place that does Mystic Tan the other day and they have a $12 intro offer. So, I'm waiting until I'm upon my next competition because that's pretty reasonable. Of course, that's just to suck you in.
How long does it generally last?
I picked up a bottle of Clarins self-tanner and I have tried it 3x and it makes my face a little blotchy. I'm not sure if these things bring out any imperfections (my skin is normally pretty smooth/clear), or if I'm just doing it improperly....

You know, I think the difference may be that I don't follow the Mystic Tan Rules. The one time I toweled off afterwards (level 3) I was very dissappointed with the results. So much so that the next day I went back and half accused them of giving me Level 1. Usually I do NOT towel off, but rub in the solution with my hands, all over. I mean, I pay for the solution, why let a towel absorb it.
Mamboqueen, for me the tan lasts about 4 days with full color, after that it takes the rest of the week to fade away. When it fades, it is much more even than pro-tan.

A real tan is bad for your skin -- and health.

depends i guess..
i'm dark .. so not so vulnerable to sun rays as opposed to pale skin
plus i heard that its ok so long as u do it in small doses (no more than 15 -30 mins) and during certain day hours where violet rays are at minimum to non-existent which is as i rember before 10 am and after 4 pm.. and there are also protection tan oils if one is too worried..
i also heard that the tan creams are not good for u in the long run and may cause skin problems or illness over the long run because its not natural compounds.. not sure of that.. but i'd rather do it naturally than not if u know what i'm saying..
plus the natural tan looks like waaaaay so much better and attractive.. in my opinion..

Not everybody tans. Some fair people just burn. Ouch!
Ha! There are advantages to being a person of color. I can save all my would-be tanning cash and spend it on new shoes!

Okay; I'll be trying out the mystic tan within the next week. And I'll rub it in rather than towel it off; that makes good sense, Larinda.
Sabor - ha! Haven't seen the sun in these parts in weeks, okay, maybe a brief glimpse from time to time, but it hasn't been sitting-in-the sun weather AT ALL in my neck of the woods yet. It's supposed to start tomorrow. Having said that, I'm too vain to sit in the sun only to be cursing my wrinkles in a year or two. I could kick myself for all the time I spent baking in my younger years.

Not just wrinkles, an increased risk of skin cancer. It's just not worth it, IMHO. You're right.

Well, I for one would be all too happy to go outside - but I work inside when the sun's out! And besides - the chances of me wearing something as revealing as my latin costume outside of a ballroom is pretty slim. And tan lines - ick! :)
Thanks for all the info, guys! I'll let you know what works. :)

Mamboqueen, just make sure to use the cream on your hands afterwards, or wash them immediatey, or use the babywipes...whatever they have there to clean your hands...make sure you clean them very well...don't miss your cuticles or under the nails... clean them very well.

Ashley: Sunless.com is great - the reviews and application tips were really helpful.

Larinda, Thanks for all of the great info on Mystic Tan. I'm going to have to go and check that out. It is sort of pricey where I live but it sounds like a dream compared to painting myself with self-tanner.
thanks!! :D

I've no idea. I'm pale and I like me that way. I refuse to tan for competitions. Of course I don't do latin, but a lot of ladies tan for standard and smooth. I'm not going to risk skin cancer and wrinkles, and I'm not certain just how safe the chemical tans are. Its not worth it for me. Besides, the pale skin goes with the red hair.

Most places tend to have a 2 for 1 introductory special so keep your eyes open for that... still doesn't make it cheap but it definately helps!

Not everybody tans. Some fair people just burn. Ouch!
That's Me - i burn so quickly in the sun!
I have been having fantasytan airbrushing done for a couple of years now - it is absolutley perfect for people like me who cannot tan naturally & those who dislike sunbeds. Also good if you cannot tan yourself evenly with creams/sprays etc.
I pay £15 per session (about $25) and come out fairly dark (in the US they have different colour levels - so you can pick the level suitable for you). Their website is Fantasytan.com (http://www.fantasytan.com)
