View Full Version : bruised ankles?

Ok guys, here's the deal.
I am not flexible in the feet. When I point my toes, it's all I can do to get a straight line down the front of my leg. I've been really working on using my feet lately, and dancing a lot to prepare for an upcoming comp. Now the fronts of my ankles are getting these splotchy purple-green bruises and in the last couple of days they've been pretty tender.
Has this happened to anyone else? If so, is it bad? If nothing else, it's very funny-looking . . .

Hmmm. Greenish, splotchy bruises aren't a very good thing. Take care of your ankles!
My tips for you, being a student trainer:
1. Ice your ankles often!
--Why? Because the icing will help the swelling in the bruises go down and it will relieve pain.
--When? After you dance, and if you can, every night might be nice.
--How long? About 10-15 minutes preferably. Don't do it too long though, after that much time, the ice stops helping.
2. Once you finish icing, "trace the alphabet with your feet."
--What this means? Move your feet in the shape of the letters to stretch out the ligaments and muscles that you have tightened from the icing. (lack of blood flow means constricted things) So, for example, "C" means moving your foot in a crescent shape. (Just for a visual in your head.) Be slow when you do this; we don't want you to make anything worse by going too fast!
3. Take care of your ankles!
--What am I talking about? If it really hurts, wear a brace (if you have one). Try not to do anything else that's very strenuous to your ankles besides Dance while all of these bruises are healing. Rest when you can, and don't wear rediculously high-heeled shoes! =^_~=
If you knew these, I didn't mean to baby; I'm just imparting my lovely Sports Med. knowledge! =^__^= I hope this helps if you didn't know. Hope your ankles feel better soon, delamusica!

*nod nod* No prob! I want to be a doctor, so taking the Sports Med. class was some of the most fun I've had in ages!
--Heh, heh... One of those fun points happened to be walking around school with my wrists taped up from a tape lab we'd done that day... Everyone was asking me what I'd done to my wrists!      I was having so much fun!
I did forget one thing though!
Take Ibuprofen (sp?).
--Why? Not only will you recieve pain relief, but the ibuprofen will act as an anti-inflamatory, so the swelling from the bruises will go down! The reason between taking this and Tylenol is that Tylenol as acetometaphin in it which will only take care of pain, to my knowledge, and doesn't have the blood thinners/anti-inflams.**
*grins* So, eh, there's my last tip that I can possibly think of until my brain kicks me agian, so I hope that helps, and I haven't gotten too, "  *looks around* What is she talking about?!?!" on you all!
Sakura Kitty :kitty:
**<-- That (the acetometaphin) happens to be the reason why one takes Tylenol when one has a concussion. With the concussion, it's a subdural hematoma, aka bleeding in the brain (under the skin/skull), so the blood thinners in Ibu. will let the hematoma bleed longer instead of clotting! And of course, that is *NOT* what we want to happen... :? Meep! So we have people take Tylenol for concussions!

Any advice for a fluid-filled knee? It's shrunk quite a bit in the last two weeks, but I can see fluid's still there. Mobility is also more or less back to normal and I can put weight on it now, but pain comes back if I dance... (I suppose "don't dance" is the obvious advice, but you know it's not easy ). I've been alternately icing it (at home) and strapping it (at work/out).

Hmm.... :? For a fluid filled knee, beyond going to the doctor, your icing it and bracing it looks pretty good. Again, ibuprofen is your best friend in this one too!
The only thing we really covered in Sports Med. that was close to this was something called a "Baker's Cyst." It builds up in the Popatiel (sp?) Space (the spot in the back of your knee where it seems hollow), and eventually bursts -- that part can happen with or without pain, discomfort, and your knee will probably be tender for a bit. Did you notice any circular objects building up there over the past few weeks? I believe Doc' (our teacher -- it's what we called him) said that the BCs could get to about the size of a golf ball....
Beyond that, I could only think Bursitis. Fluid gets into the Bursas (the Baker's Cyst is actually one of the seven Bursas in the knee), but I don't know whether the rest of the bursa sacs burst... :?
It definitely sounds like you've managed this well, as much as you could do yourself, in the past two weeks that it started and has continued, however, I would advise going to go see a doctor about this; especially if it's happened before and it doesn't really get better, Because the Doctor is the one who's *really* going to be able to tell you what's going on.
I hope that helps even in the slightest!

(PS- I soooooo feel for you on the, "I know, I know, 'don't dance,' but it's so haaaaaard!!!!!" *huggles* I hope your knee gets better soon, Macmoto!)

Thanks sweetie!
I'm praying my knee will behave tomorrow night -- it's the event of the month as far as I'm concerned! Nothing will stop me from dancing tomorrow, I can tell you.

I would be a little careful about that MM!! A little rest now vs not being able to dance for weeks...perhaps a doctor may be a good idea if that does not get better.... :friend:

I will see a doctor, I promise -- next week, after the dance.
I also promise I will lay off my salsa stalker act for the night. That should cut down the amount of dancing by at least half.

Sagitta's right, but I understand where you're coming from with this Dance Event, so here's what I'll tell you:
Ice before the event and take 1-2 Ibuprofen.
Stretch thoroughly.
Ice after the event.
Stretch thoroughly.
GO TO THE DOCTOR AS SOON AS YOU CAN, AND DON'T WAIT AN ENTIRE WEEK!!!!!!!
Oh, and I forgot, have fun and don't kill yourself or your knees! :friend: :friend: From one person to another with bad knees, I totally understand! So, go have fun!

Dance all you want. I probably couldn't stop you if I tried. Plus, you're entitled to some fun. You've waited for it. 8) See a doctor when you can, though, please. I'd hate your injury to get worse. Then you really might have to lay off dancing a while. That WOULD be a tragedy! So take it easy. Okay? :D

Heh, heh. Silly MacMoto! =^__^= Well, so long as you're resting *NOW*!! Now all you have to do is go see your lovely doctor and report back to us!
