What CD/album are you currently listening to, not necessarily at this exact moment in time  but what you either last listened to or will put on as soon as you get home, in the car, or get the headphones for your portable [insert name] out? :D

I'm so sorry to hear that.  The last time I heard that was at my local supermarket. They play it every day, to announce when there's hot, fresh bread avaiable for sale. It gets old, pretty quickly that way. :x

I "hear" WCS music nearly every minute that I am at work . . . I constantly have it playing in the background . . . the brain still registers it!

The music is usually a compilation CD that I make up from the most popular WCS swing songs used by DJs - especially the ones for competitions.

I try to learn every piece of the music, so when I am dancing, socially or in competition, I can react to those little hits or accents, or prepare for breaks or react to breaks in the music, etc.

I have about 25 of these compilation CDs - from Benny Goodman and Frank Sinatra to R. Kelly and Outcast!

I have several CD albums on my MP3 player that I'm listening non-stop for the past couple of weeks:

Africando "Baloba"
Africando "Trovador"
Tito Puente "Top Percussion" (Wow!!!!!, if you like afro-cuban)
Tito Puente "Oye como va"
Willie Colon "Idilio"
Ismael Miranda "Vengo con Todo"

Vince: Like how you listen to music to find those spots where doing something cool can work with the music. Even though I am still very new to the dance world, I do the same thing each week at the socials I attend, listening and playing with the music that is heard inorder to dance better. I like your idea of listening to music when not dancing to do the same thing.

Anyway, getting to the question, I was listening today to a compilation CD put out by Everything But The Girl. Yesterday, I was listening to The Tango Lesson sound track.

Of course, what we all listen to changes, and sometimes I listen to what appears to be silence, yet really isn't silence at all.

On topic, I'm listening to the song displayed on these two sites, and is called "Banana Phone," by Raffi:

(Go see this one only if you don't mind strong language and some violence {it's towards the end, and it gets a bit O_o} -- but I promise it's worth it! =^__^=)
http://uploads.ungrounded.net/content.php?id=166521&name=166521_bananaphone.swf&title=Banana%20Phone&date=1087099200&quality=b&uj=0&w=550&h=400

(This is a sped up, non-complete version of the song I'm listening to, but it's much more light hearted! And any anime fans out there will appreciate the Gundam in a banana suit.... =^__^=;;)
http://www.ganoobies.net/banana/

(If anyone who goes to these links *isn't* driven insane by the catchy-ness of this song, here's a link to a website where you can download the song. This link will take you to a forum, scroll down until you get to a post written by "Daiken" {it's the second one}. It'll say MP3, so just right-click on it, hit "Save Target As" on your little menu, and you'll start downloading it!)
http://forum.ebaumsworld.com/showthread.php?t=15344&page=2

Be forewarned, it's *REALLY* catchy, and *will* get stuck in your head!   All the better if you like it! *laughs* See you around!

Also, this is for Cocodrilo & Sagitta(Ha!Ha!Ha!)...I'm listening to Pat Metheny Group's "Speaking of Now", First Circle", & "Imaginary Day", I can truly write for the last 10 years I have listened to PMG EVERY SINGLE DAY!!!!!! His music has been true inspiration!!!

Therefore I'm listening to my fingers punch the keyboard, but that's all.

Thank you for the kind words, I really appreciate it.. I kind of over did it playing in 5 softball leagues this year, but it was an unfortunate incident (a dirty hit) that caused my injury..

The repeated echoing of things at my first night of Summer Band.

Most specifically, the first 32 counts (and steps!) of "Children of Sanchez" by Chuck Mangionne (sp?! :? ). Great song! Gotta love it! Right now, Troy State's Band plays it waaaaaaay better though...   (I bet they always will!)

It's great. :) There are a couple of tracks on it that sound a lot more influenced by Indian/Middle eastern music than their stuff that I've heard before, which is pretty cool.

I got to see them live a couple of years ago as well - at a small venue in Fort Collins, Colorado that's nestled at the bottom of a beautiful canyon . . . that show was also pretty much just a big party - they rock!

I love my Glenn Miller, but I changed to Enrique Chia just this afternoon :D

I lucked up on a "dollar store CD" the other day entitled "Swing Swing Swing". It's a compilation of John Williams and the Pops' interpretations of Sing Sing Sing, In the Mood, Tuxedo Junction, Sunrise Serenade, and a lot of others. I always love it when I can find a GOOD CD at one of the "cheapie prices"... how many of them are floating around out there with really crappy stuff on them?

Not Sir Williams though! He always comes through in the end!

But he'll have to wait until after Chia- "Piano con Sabor"- my favorita es Cereza Rosa, originally by Prado.

OK, is too long to read the whole thing.

It depends which car i drives. In 1 car, I can plug in my iPod which I have 2000+ salsa songs in there. Just let it shuffle and whatever comes up. Ocassionally, I would just click BVSC and only listen to that. There are times when passenger(s) request specific artist such as Victor Manuelle then I have no choice.

In the other car, I only have a beat up CD player. So i made myself some 15 CDs compilation of mostly NY sounds.

My favorite artists will have to be Cal Tjader, Jose Cuba, Francisco Aguabella, Tito Puente and BVSC.

Right this moment an El Gran Combo collection I haven't listened to for a while.

Some recent purchases: La Lupe Queen of Latin Soul (great boleros, as expected, but I was happily surprised that there are also a couple hot salsa tracks on here), a Lucho Gatica collection (I'm beginning to branch out into boleristas), and Larry Harlow's Hommy (which makes me wish I understood Spanish).

Also, I bought some new Arabic CDs (by old singers) lately: Wadi el-Safi, Mohammed Abdel Wahab, Farid el Atrache. Ali Aldik (he's newer and more dance oriented).

I've bought so much this year. I'm still absorbing a lot of it.

However, I would start with "100 Degrees & Rising" or "Beneath the Surface" (earlier CD's).

I've yet to hear anything from the new Fruko but I have been keeping my eye on it, so to speak.

Swiss chard is related to spinach, I think. (Very similar nutritional profile.) It doesn't melt down to practically nothing the way spinach does when you cook it. You can pretty much cook it the same way you cook spinach or other greens. The stem is a little tough, and a lot of time people just discard it, but if you cut it into matchsticks and sautee it, it's pretty tasty. I also like Swiss chard simply steamed, although I prefer it sauteed in olive oil and garlic and so on.

I'm listening to a CD by Lebanese singer Fairouz, one that contains two movie soundtracks from the late 60's.

Then Te Quiero Mas by Joe Arroyo would be another good one. Not sure how much latin I can slip in...but hoping to have at least two breaks. The title track is one of my all time favorite songs. I love the transition about halfway before the songs. When I shared that song with someone very familiar with music theory, he explained it to me this way:

"The more 'folkloric' [the term I was using] part in the middle corresponds to a shift from D minor to D major, and an interesting thing around 3:15 [the point where this incredible transition happens] is that it shifts back to minor, but now the key is F minor instead of D minor. In music-theory terms, D major to F minor is an instance of the most distant of all possible key relations." Also, I like the sort of doppler effect bend the chorus does after that point. When the soneo comes it, it's extremely aggressive. That whole last section of the song reminds me of the feeling of having been out dancing for a long time. There's the slightest alteration in the perception of time. (I say this as an x-pothead.)

Also, the timbales, which had been absent for most of the song, come in very strongly.

Delayed entry of timbales is a trick that's used in another one of my favorite recordings: "En un Beso la Vida" by Louie Ramirez (w/ Azuquita on vocals).

I have fallen in love with the son singer! :kissme: What a voice!

And I really enjoy the mixture of son, salsa and hiphop. Perhaps little to much of hiphop in some of the tracks. But the good tracks are so good that they compensate for that minus.

I love to dance that song. When that transition happens, it's like you get infused with this whole new energy. :)

I love "Busca Por Dentro" for the beautiful lyrics but for dancing this one's my favorite on the CD.

The music consists of solely guitar and accordion, and it almosts reminds me of something you picture the Spanish Guitar and Flamenco dancing... =^__^= Don't know the names though....

I can do without the English-language songs done by Jimmy Sabater, but the Cheo Feliciano tracks are almost all great, and his take on "Oye Como Va" is very distinctive.

Sonora Poncena "Gracias Senor" (from Back to the Road). I know this is about religious beliefs that I don't share, but this song is slammin'. (I have to admit, too, that because of the religious subject matter, I am able to pick out more of the words, thanks to cognates and shared Latin roots, so I get kind of excited by that.)

Tito Nieves: Fabricando Fantasias

On first listen (actually I'm listening to it for the second time since I bought it this evening) I like it. There's not a cut I don't like except maybe the ballad version of the title song, but that's just sort of an extra anyway. I like the reggaeton spiked "Ya No Queda Nada." I like when he gives what might be the longest shout out to other salsa artists ever in "Sigue Viviendo." Good all around. Aside from some softness in the production of the title track (which seems appropriate to the subject anyway, and is still pretty tasteful compared to the worst excesses of salsa romantica) and the reggaeton in the second song, it's pretty much old school.

I like this better than the new Gilberto Santa Rosa or Victor Manuelle's releases from this year. I think I might like it better than Grupo Niche's Imaginacion as well, although "Culbera" is a bit more of a standout track for me than anything on the this Tito Nieves CD (but that could change as some of these songs grow on me more).

(I broke my rule about not buying any salsa until I got back into going out dancing, but I forgive myself. I just hope VISA will be as forgiving. Actually, I paid cash for this, but. . .)

Hector Lavoe: Strikes Back

This might have been the first Hector Lavoe CD I bought, and I didn't like it (or him, really) too much at the time.

But. . . I think this is underrated material. It's got a much darker sound and feel than most salsa, even when it's being upbeat. I don't know how to describe it exactly (for those who haven't heard it) but there's something distinctive about it. Is the bass doing something unusual here? I ask because I seem to notice it a lot, and I am not someone who usually tends to focus on the bass. There's a real bittersweet feel to this album.

Ray Barretto:
Salsa Caliente de Nu York! [Nascente]

I cannot get into this CD for some reason. I guess I just don't like Ray Barretto. I remember hearing Indesctructible in someone's car once and liking it, but we had just come from dancing and I was starting to develop a crush on her, so maybe it was just the context.

However, Nascente puts out some really nice reissues, often with better sound than the issues that come directly from Fania. I like their Cheo Feliciano collection, although I find it a little jolting going back and forth between songs with the vibes/acoustic guitar sort of sound and songs with more of a big band sound dominated by baritone saxophone. Plus I am used to hearing the songs from Cheo in their album sequence, which works extremely well. So, if you already like Cheo Feliciano, you might want to just start getting the albums; but still, overall, it's a good compilation.

Hmm, I had to :google: for both these guys' photos and audio clips. I think Alejandro Sanz is more my type. Alejandro Fernandez turns me off in the same way George Clooney does... (yes I've been told I'm weird)

As for music, I'm VERY particular about male singers' voice. My current favourite voices belong to Rey Ruiz and Gonzalo Chomat (heard in La Palabra's album "Breakthrough"). Make me think of the sound of a trumpet.
