I'm very excited we will have the opportunity to see an event of this caliber here on the east coast of the US!!!

Logistical question: On the website for this event (which is just a shell at this point) and according to what was announced at OSB, this event is taking place at the Meadowlands Expo Center.

According to the most recent issue of our USA Dance magazine, however, this event is taking place at the Marriott-Brooklyn Bridge. (See advertisement on page 36.)

Anyone have any insight?

Site has been changed, it will be taking place in Brooklyn at the Marriott. Website will hopefully be updated shortly.

Daphna - are you planning on having bleachers/larger ballroom (if available) to accomodate a larger audience?

Also, do you know if they will be offering other non-world champs events (i.e. amateur or pro/am, etc) that weekend as part of the event?

Cannot definitely. It will held in NY, not in Europe. It's much cheaper to go to Brooklyn instead of other countries to watch the competition.

Hey everyone!

Mandicraft let me know that the site has been updated.

Tickets are NOT on sale yet, *BUT* you can book the hotel at the comp rate, which is $239/night. (The Expedia rate for these same nights is $299/night.) I went ahead and booked a room right away.

There is also additional information about other events that will be part of this AMAZING event: an open-to-the-world Youth Standard competition AND a by-invitation showcase of American-style couples.

sambanada
05-23-2010, 05:57 PM
Wll other events run at this competition, or only the world championship?

ChaChaMama
05-23-2010, 07:17 PM
YES, there will be ANOTHER competitive event: an open-to-the-world youth standard championship.

NO, there will not be the full panoply of other events.

There will also be a showcase of American style. (I am assuming this means top amateur American style couples, not pros, since the event is put on by USA Dance, but that is pure speculation on my part.)

I am copying and pasting the tentative schedule from the website in case that is helpful:

Schedule - November 13, 2010
This is a tentative schedule. Please check back closer to the event for an updated and complete schedule.

100 days to go!

According to the piece Daphna wrote in the most recent issue of American Dancer, "Invitations have already been sent out to countries all over the world to send their representatives, with 90 couples expected to come and compete."

Sounds fabulous!

I would guess the VIP tables might be raised up a bit if there is a stage area, plus they will probably have *******ments (snacks, beverages?), and $50.

@babylin-- I have a bunch of friends who will want to attend-- I know a lot of ppl are volunteering like yourself, but I would rather not miss rounds that I really want to watch because I have to be on a volunteer shift

Just read this on the website, can someone decipher it for me?

The order of the dances for the World Latin Final will be "Rumba Solo's, Rumba, Samba, Cha Cha, Jive, Paso Doble Solo's and Paso Doble".

What do they mean by solo's? showcases?

TinyDancer109
08-17-2010, 01:02 PM
and why is the competition selective in which dances they have solos in??

ChaChaMama
08-17-2010, 02:27 PM
The use of the apostrophe S in the passage you quoted is the main thing confusing me.

I believe the idea is that the couples in the final will perform solos of particular dances to allow the judges to do a more focused comparison, in addition to the side-by-side, everyone-on-the-floor comparison we see at most competitions.

The competition selects dances because if the goal is to compare couples, then it makes more sense to see Couple A do a rumba and Couple B do a rumba than to see Couple A do a rumba and Couple B do a paso.

TinyDancer109
08-17-2010, 02:56 PM
the apostrophe s also confused me, but that is a direct quote from the website.

So these solos would only be in the final? Also, I understand specifiying that the couple perform sepcific dances for comparison, but how do they choose which dance(s) (i.e. rumba and paso only - no jive, cha cha, or samba)?

DanceJoy

1. solos are in the finals only
2. I believe the dances are chosen randomly.

The solos are also typical of IDSF major comps. They make the event that much more special, longer, and tape-worthy. BTW, will there be any TV recording of the event?

Daphna
08-18-2010, 05:52 AM
Yes, just not sure when we will be able to see the event on TV.

Casey

http://www.idsf.net/index.tpl?id=57

The solos for all of the IDSF 2010 championships are rumba/paso for latin; waltz/quickstep for ballroom; and quickstep/jive for 10 dance.

They have had different systems - one a few years ago was that 2 couples danced against each other in the two dances that were treated differently.

Daphna

Its the World Latin Amateur Championships, the top 2 couples from each IDSF member country from around the world are invited to compete. Currently, we have couples from Iceland, Italy, Estonia, Armenia, Slovakia to name a few, plus of course the USA. There will also be the "Open to the World Youth Standard Championship" and a Showcase of American Style performed by 6 of our top American style couples.
So get your tickets now and spend a November weekend in NY.

I certainly can't speak for Anna/Alexei or Anna/Andrei, but they were just 1st and 3d at the German Open IDSF Grand Slam on Thursday night. The New York event is the IDSF World Championship, and they are IDSF dancers. The boycotting is going the other direction, w/ many of the WDC latin pros not dancing in the German Open. Many of the IDSF dancers, ballroom and latin, did not dance at Blackpool because it was perceived to be allied w/ the WDC.

A TICKETING REMINDER FOR THE 2010 IDSF WORLD DANCESPORT LATIN CHAMPIONSHIP!

We are almost completely sold out for the evening session. In order to accommodate as many spectators as possible, tickets which are not paid for are being released for resale. Please log-in to your account and make payment ASAP so you don't miss out on this fabulous competition! No tickets without payment will be held at the door.

We still have good seats, and lots of daytime seats. Come see the very best in the world on November 13th in Brooklyn, NY.

If you paid for your tickets when you ordered them, then don't worry. Your tickets are purchased and you can pick them up at Will Call at the Brooklyn Bridge Marriott on Saturday, November 13th.

If you ordered tickets through online and DIDN'T make payment, those tickets are not reserved and will not be at the will call desk at Worlds. It is a common practice to rerelease unpaid ticket orders for general sale ahead of an event.

If you purchase tickets now, please make sure to pay for them immediately. Thanks!

So the o2cm system seems to indicate that the event will not start until 12 noon. The website seems to indicate registration at 9, event starts at 11. Does anyone know if 11 or 12 is the actual start time?

I'm also wondering how early the ballroom opens. We have table seats, but I am not sure if I need to be there the second it opens to claim my spot at the table, or if specific seats are assigned. (Not like this is a big deal one way or another in the grander scheme of things.)

So Larinda, I figure you will have the scoop. Who is doing the "Stars of American Style"? Or is it a super-secret surprise?

Er...do I read this as "between the quarter-final and semi-final" or "some couples between the quarter and semi, and some couples between the semi and final"?

Thanks again!

I think if there is no traffic, taking a taxi is fastest.

You can take the Airtrain to the Howard Beach station and then the A train to Jay St-Borough Hall, which ends up right behind the hotel (closest station exit is Myrtle and Jay). The subway will take you at least an hour, though, and in no traffic a cab should be about 30 minutes.

5thZanibellato

Got to meet DFers 19DancerBabyLin (handed us our tickets), Medira (blast from the past!), Larinda McRaven and AvaB (sweethearts, all of them!). AMAZING EVENT! Amazing weekend. It lived up to my every expectation.

We had absolutely fantastic seats, so we had a very upper close and personal view of the action. We shared our table with a couple from Australia whose daughter danced the event and with a young woman from German who was related to one of the judges.

I got teary-eyed during the parade of countries at the beginning.

Then the event started. 76 couples (they announced 77, but one was missing) dancing in 7 heats. I got to see a ton of couples dance that I had never seen before, and they were so close! They really interact with the audience, too. Lots of eye contact and charisma.

I had intentionally not familiarized myself too much with which couples were expected to advance to the final, and yet I could pick out four of the couples that ultimately wound up in the final from Round 1, with ease.

And yet the depth of the talent was astounding. There were couples that finished toward the top of the quarter-final that were extraordinary. For example, I quite liked the couple from Estonia: 155--Vladislav Inostrantsev and Marina Nikolayeva. And obviously the semi and the final were just loaded with talent, where you could drive yourself crazy trying to figure out who to watch.

Saw a ton of DFers, past and present, including Mandicraft, 19dancerbabylin, Meagan, Daphna, IlyZislin, NonieS, sambagirl, scottoccs, casey, njdancegirl, mamboqueen, Tibor, Larinda, and I'm sure others whose names I am forgetting because I am bit tired.

We also got to go out to dinner with my very best friend whom I have known since I was 3 and a favorite cousin (they were the maid of honor and the flower girl at my wedding 20 years ago!), out to brunch on Sunday with one of my very closest friends from college, and then to a matinee of "In the Heights," where we again had great seats. Then a quick stop at Junior's before heading home. I will be tired at work today, since we got back late, but it will be eminently worth it!

Back to the subject, this is the first event I have attended with this caliber dancing and one thing that struck me, as mentioned in a post above, is how much more adept the dancers are at engaging the audience in their performances.

Cha Cha Mama - Which Australian couple were the parents associated with?
Arkady & Rosa or Jeremy & Megan? Rosa danced w/ Derek Hough a while back. The top Australian couple, Manuel Favilla & Yuliya Nikitenko, split up in October; but I'm not sure whether they were IDSF.

I actually do not remember. I do know they were the parents of a daughter, and that their child did not make it to the night session.

It was actually kind of odd. Due to confusion with the table assignments, another couple was originally told they were at Table 20 and sat in the Australians' seats. (They are a prominent dance family, and the husband is a judge.) So the Australians retreated to find out where they were supposed to be.

Then a volunteer came and told this other couple they were actually at Table 10, not Table 20. The wife was not pleased at having to move at the last second before the event started. Then, after they left, two people came who clearly were also not assigned to the table and just took those seats! They seemed to be friends of a high-ranking USA Dance official. I decided not to get involved, esp since the event was starting and I was pretty caught up in it emotionally. (My husband did mention to them about the Australians.) The upshot was that the Australians didn't get to sit in their assigned seats until the evening session. They did not seem upset, though.

The German niece of a judge was really helpful. Apparently there was a computer screen somewhere displaying the recalls, and she would come back to the table with them marked in her program. :) You would have liked her too, casey.

There were two couples that I really enjoyed watching, and neither made finals. Can anyone help me identify them? Lol I don't remember their numbers and countries...

The first was this girl in a stringy/stripy type costume... i.e. there were cutouts of her costume (not talking about flapper costume strings). She had the same costume in purple and white, and switched them during the semi? or quarters? Short, blazing red bob hair. She may have been from Italy, although I'm not certain. But I thought she was freaking phenomenal!

The second couple I believe was from France. Girl kinda looks asian to me, her hair was slicked back into a short ponytail perhaps? White costume.

Lol sorry for the lack of description :P
