Ha! You beat me. Read the article and loved it.
Wow, some great advice from a seasoned and wise couple!
I believe that the best coach is you, yourself anyway. Master the coach inside you, because you do not see yourself alone on the floor and that is something you must do, because you teach yourself the best. If you do not have that strong identity of who you are and know that feeling of self improvement, if you do not understand the information and what you are doing with it and teaching yourself during practise then there is no way you can make it. So that is No.1 advice, be the best coach for yourself.
In regard to politics as an excuse for not doing well competitively,
I know this is a very old fashioned idea but to me the best dancing always wins.
Such a great attitude!

I don't disagree, but also much, much easier to say when you are #1! ;)

I agree with Michal's views on placement and modesty, and I'm nowhere near the top. The first time I realized this view was a comp where I thought for sure we'd make the final, but we didn't. At first I was upset because I didn't understand why. A lot of people told us how great we danced and they didn't understand why either. After about half an hour of venting, I just chalked it up to needing to dance better and leaving no room for doubt in the judges' minds next time. But my partner had all kinds of favortism theories and wouldn't let it go. I was more frustrated by that attitude than our placement!!

I loved this as well. The best couple on the floor wins. It was exactly what I told my friend the other day. :p

I have thought about it that way. It is a true, but it is hard to say this when you are #1 as well.

I brought it up not because I doubt that this is Michael's sentiment, but simply because I have interviewed competitors who feel one way about this issue when it works for them but another way when things don't work for them. I don't doubt the sincerity in the first instance, but recognize that as context changes, so too can sentiment.
For me, then, Bob Powers framed it best when he noted that you better not blame politics for your losses unless you're willing to credit politics for your wins.

I am not sure you read the whole interview. But, they actually talked about politics when they lost. In the interview, Joanna was angry with results she got, but later when she watched her performance she realized that they were not good enough to win. So basically I guess they did not blame judges for their loss if I did not read the content incorrectly.

great read. & great advice. thanks for posting! :)
Oh, and glad to know that winning Blackpool once is "quite easy"! ;)
He was questioning that young dancers, 17 or 18 years old, even really should be worrying about the politics. Something like, 'Shouldn't they be practicing their rumba walks?' Great attitude to focus on what you can control, not on what you can't.

I got your point SD and my point was general too. You see if you are a champion, sometimes a lot of people look up to you and your small action or talk would be twisted by someone else. And, I think it is easy to say such a thing as a champion, but at the same time I think someone is very brave to say such a thing as a champion.;)

Great read, although not a personal fan of their style I agree with their thought pattern on comp dancing. Thanks for posting.

I think they're awesome. I saw them in person at the Windy City Dance Competition and am amazed at how well they dance together.
