View Full Version : What Am I Listening for in Salsa Music?

I know I shouldn't be asking this. My swing teacher talks about beginning students being either thinkers or feelers and I'm definitely one of the thinkers who needs to understand what's going on instead of just feeling it and doing it. (poor description of thinkers vs feelers, but it'll have to do for now).

I just started Salsa again (prior experience: a few months of beginning classes after having had a few months of intermediate classes, which were my very first dance lessons, period, all about four years ago with absolutely no Salsa in the meantime).

Last Thursday was the second class upon my return. I was dancing to the music and staying in time with it throughout. The problem is that I have absolutely no idea what I was following. While I'm there dancing like a feeler, my thinker side is grasping for a straw to steady itself with.

So how is Salsa music structured? And what are we supposed to be listening for?

It's 4/4 timing just like most popular music, 4 quarter beats to a measure. When you're dancing it you dance over two measures, hence the 8 quarter beats that instructors count.

If you want more information on rhythm in salsa music, this thread might be a good starting point:

I also found this song structure breakdown on the net, if that's what you're looking for:
