Hi there,

At my regular lessons they play modern music. Now, last week I had my first training for the competitions and they play totally different music: unknown music, and it seems more traditional. Problem is. For me, this kind of music is a bit harder to dance to, because the beats are not always as clear as I'm used to. Especially with the rumba and slow waltz.

Now I would like to make a collection of difficult "competition songs" to listen and practice to at home, so I can get used to it. It is hard to get song titles at my school and I don't know any song titles or where to find them. If anyone could help me out, I would really appreciate it!

There are loads of threads up here on this topic. I'm well aware of that, but they seem to cover mostly modern music. Besides, lots of URLs they are referring to are not working any more.

Thanks in advance!

By the way, I'm in Europe.

YOur best bet is to go to websites like ballroomdancers.com or danz2000.com and buy some of the cds they have for sale. These are the cds that are used at competitions.

When we go to comps, I use two programs on my iphone for music identification. One's called "Shazam" and the other is "SoundHound" (formerly called "Midomi"). I've had moderate success with both these programs, and immediately after it identifies the song it gives you the option to buy it in iTunes. They're not always successful in identifying the music, but they've both helped to expand my dance library quite a bit.

Maybe you can find something similar for use on your phone or PDA?

Thanks both of you! Ordering a CD or two at ballroomdancers.com looks like a good idea to me. :) Do you have any experiences or recommendations?

Shazam or Soundhound is not going to work, since I don't have a high-tech mobile phone. ;) So I'll do it the old way: memorizing lyrics and searching them with Google.

What about talking to your teacher (or the person who plays the music) and have them make some suggestions? Since the tempos can vary between comps, a pro can suggest music at both ends of the tempo range.

Thanks for your reply! :)

That could've been the easiest and most straightforward solution. Unfortunately, it's very hard to get competition music titles at my school. They have loads of original CDs, but they are only used during the normal lessons. During competition training they seem to use a couple of self-compiled CDs. So they'll need to find the maker and ask him to trace back which CDs and titles he/she used.

Choose a CD from the Casa Musica Premium Standard and/or Latin Unlimited series.
