Hey guys,

Want to know how to boost your learning curve in
salsa dancing?

Ok, this is the thing...

Let's say you practice your moves and steps 1 time per
week for a month...

That means that you will have practiced 4 times for any
given month.

Now let's say you go out 2 weekends, so that would come
to a total of 6 times in a month that you actually *do*
some dancing, or practicing...

Side Note - At this point it really doesn't matter if
it's dancing or practicing at home, the important thing
is that you're actually doing something with what you've
been learning.

Ok, so in a month you'll gain the experience of someone
who has practiced 6 times...not bad, but...

Let's say that instead of 1 time per week, you practiced
3 times per week...say Wednesday, Friday, & Saturday.

In just 2 weeks, you will gain the experience that you
gained before in 1 month, you cut your time by half.

Take that a step further, and in 1 month, you'll have
2 months of experience, in 6 months it would be like
gaining the experience of 1 year...

Do you see how powerful that is?

By simply doing more of what you need to do, you will
be ahead of the average person.

Why?

Because you are no longer doing average things.

You're doing more...

So why is this important?

Because to really advance in salsa dancing, or anything
for that matter, if you schedule yourself to do more
in the same amount of time, you'll gain huge momentum.

And in learning, momentum is key.

And notice that I didn't even count the times you may
go out to a club and dance...

Add that to the mix, and you're really making progress
by leaps and bounds!

Absolutely Fernando! This is what one of my old dance mentors used to term "sweat equity"…the time actually put in on the floor!

Very true. I've been taking a break, but am getting right back on to the bandwagon. I am assisting in two beginner classes tonight, and every Monday from now on out, so I can focus on my fundamentals, learn the followers role, and improve my communication skills. Then I'm going to set aside time to practice on other days of the week, pronto. :)

Thats why people who are on dance teams (amateur or pro) tend to be better dancers. They may not have started out as great dancers but the more they practice, the better they get.

Yesterday while talking to one of my instructors I found out that he went from beginners to advanced in 3 months! He also mentioned that he never missed a class and that he would go out dancing around 5 times a week...that was three years ago and now he teaches 7 days a week and is one of the best dancers in florida oh yeah and he's only 22! Talk about dedication.

...so what happens if you're going out 5-6 nights out of 7? Does your head explode, feet swell, or something worse?

Lol!

My (now former) boss had one of those M&M dispensers, and we bought him something like 8 lbs. of various M&M's.

Me! You know, whenever I go to clubs, I meet some people who love gossiping (which by the way is fine by me) --- "Hey, my teacher told me that Mr. X said that Ms. Y said she doesn't like his class, so Mr.X told Mr.Z that she should take her class ....on and on......" ---- that's the way they speak.

And when they are finished, I don't remember who said what, at all.

All I can do is:
... *grins*

Because to really advance in salsa dancing, or anything
for that matter, if you schedule yourself to do more
in the same amount of time, you'll gain huge momentum.

Did that, and went from beginner to advance in 6 month.
(Here 18 months later there’s still so much to learn and optimising).

Trying out the new tricks in clubs weekly give a major boost to getting
the lead and new patterns stored into memory.

You know what? I've decided to become the trick guy for the next couple times I go out. Just for the heck of it I'm going to see how many tricks I can cram into my dancing and what happens. Today night I was dancing with someone and I did 4 new moves, in addition to 5/6 other combinations. This does not account for normal left, right turns, inside turns, cbl etc. That's just plain vanilla!! :) This was at folk dance today evening. Remember my plan to convert the club to salsa / latin dancers? Well tonight we taught the basic forwards and side to side, plus back breaks. I promised to show them new moves so that they can build on what they have learnt. This way when we do rueda those who don't know that can salsa. We played a bachata, a merengue, and I gave some one-on-one tutelage to a couple people. Before I got into latin playing a latin song at the club was like pulling teeth. Now, some latin is played every night. Converting the world one step at the time!! :D

This also is part of my strategy of getting as much latin practice time in. I have Mondays when I help out with beginner latin classes to solidify my basics and try out little tricks in styling etc (Can never have too much practice in the basics  :) ), Tuesday a private and latin social dancing, Thursday rueda, and now Sunday at folk dance.
