Personally I've never danced in amsterdam (yet), so can't really give any sensible advice on places, but do know a few websites that should get your friend started

There is a site dedicated to salsa dancing in amsterdam (in english)
http://www.xs4all.nl/~ehautus/salsa-amsterdam.html

Although in dutch, a nice big list of websites about salsa in the netherlands (schools, locations, bands, events)
http://salsa.pagina.nl

Hopefully a good start, if you ever come across any interesting looking websites in dutch, and want me to take a look and give a quick translation/rundown, let me know.

Well, take Ray's word; he's the salsa party loving animal, willing to drive for miles and miles for it  !

But can you give us a hint on the exact time your friend will be staying in Amsterdam?

Anyway: every Thursday in summertime, starting July 8, from 8-10 PM there's a free salsa party in the open air theater in the Vondelpark in Amsterdam. It's supposed to be a blast! He really should check that out.

On Saturday July 10, there's a great party (workshops in daytime too) on the pier in Scheveningen (seaside, resort, approx. 1 hour by car or train from Amsterdam)

He can also go to Zandvoort (seaside resort, 30 min. drive from A'dam, train same time) on July 10, to a beachparty at beach club nr. 15.
Salsa on the beach and in the village of Zandvoort
On the 10th of July in the village of Zandvoort there will be a lot of special salsa-events during the whole day from 14.00 until 24.00.
It starts at 14.00 untill 19.00 on the beach at Mango's Beachbar and in the evening form 20.00 till 24.00 in the centre of the village there are different places with live music, dj's and performances. All free entrance. (www.salsanet.nl)

Ram's in Amsterdam on Thursday's is very popular.

Panama (www.panama.nl) has a night club atmosphere and is pretty popular as well (monthly event).

And if your friend is still here on August 21-22, he might like Dias Latinos (www.diaslatinos.nl) in Amersfoort (center of the Netherlands, 45 min. drive, 30 min. by train)!
It's an open air 'world' festival, with all kinds of latin music, lots of salsa bands too, and people dancing to it all day and night.

On the 31th of July, you have the "Solero Zomer Carnaval" in Rotterdam. That is a streetparade with dancers, and lot's of Caribean music. It is very spectacular.
For more information you should check this site:
