Hi All,

I'm trying to decide on a destination for a two-week vacation, and am wondering what I might find dance-wise in Costa Rica and the Dominican. Of course, I expect to the find a lot of merengue (which I'm not so crazy about) and bachata (which I love) in the latter, but is there any salsa in Santo Domingo (or elsewhere)? How about CR?

Thx much,
Z.

welcome Z-Zapper.

One of my friends just came back from a 2 week vacation from DR, and is going back this week again!!! Lucky guy!!

Anyhow, he is dominican plus a hardcore salsero. He said that he couldn't believe how much salsa they played at the Capitol, Santo Domingo. He mentioned that salsa is very hot there. He said something about Santiago too, but I don't really remember.

Thx Boriken,

Is your friend on this forum by any chance? It would be great to get his advice on how I might plan this trip!

Cheers,
Z.

Nope, when are you planning to take your trip? He is leaving either tomorrow or the next day to the Dominican Republic and won't be back for 2 weeks. I can ask him for recommendations.

Hey

My friend just got back from Costa Rica. She was there for 3 months and said the salsa wasn't very good. She told me they mostly did that same type of pop music you hear at clubs here.

Well, all indications from here and elsewhere are leading me to the Domincan Republic for a couple of weeks of sun, salsa, and bachata (and I'll throw in a couple of merengues for good measure). If anyone's going to be in the area in early-mid August, do let me know!

Cheers,
Z.

Yea, in the DR salsa is popular. From what I've heard from most musicians though (famous ones even - in their songs/live); Santiago is supposed to be like their music capital.

I think you should check out santiago. Some great musicians/bands have come from that city and that region.

Tell us your experiences overthere after (or during) the trip.

z_zapper, if you change the plan and decide to go to Costa Rica, look for the club called "Salsa 54." Sorry I forgot the exact location, as I visited there almost 9 years ago. But I still remember the energy I felt from the people there.
