Hi! I want to start sewing my second latin dress! :) First wasn't so good...But i know what i did wrong!
I found this dress on the internet, and i think it's really nice. but i have no idea how to make those ruffles/gathers on the bottom of skirt.
maybe the fabric is manufactured that way?
thanks!

Ya got a picture of this dress?
Tons of ways to make ruffles. Can be the fabrics, if it's cut on a bias, sent out for pleating/shirring, pearl edge w/ the curly cues, etc or as the new fashion on blouses, it's sewn on in a zig zag pattern to show fullness & form a design. or as you say, ruffle can be a bought trim.

The skirt on my pink dress is has some sort of plastic wire sewn into the hem to give it a ruffled look. you can see a picture of the dress by clicking on the link in my signature... later in the thread i posted some more close up pics of the skirt.

Yes, Dancewi, it would help if you posted a picture. TinyDancer, your ruffle on the bottom of your dress is a "forced" ruffle with fishing line sewn into the hemline. The heavier the fishing line the more curl.

The skirt = circle skirt. fitted @ the seam (hip). If you want more ripples u can make a back & frt skirt - 2 circles joined @ side seam. the frt skirt will have a point to the top. I can tell you about how it looks but I can't describe how to get there. :) Have fun experimenting!
Oh. Those aren't ruffles.

Your right dancewi, those are not ruffles. Much like the above post - the skirt is a circle skirt, with a higher "navel" and lower back line. You would have to make your circle skirt first and attach to your leotard bottoms. THEN, you would add the rusched color mesh/lyrcra/powernet - whatever the contract color would be to the upperhip line and across the front, finishing in the halter, but the side seams to the rusching are not lined up with the circleskirt midseam. Essentially, the more "circle" material you have the more skirt ruffle affect or swing skirt affect. The bottom hem is lined with contrast satin bias. Do not use a baby blanket bias tape - they are too heavy and not give you the look your going for.

You could try cutting two "donuts" of fabric to make a double circle skirt. Cut a line from the outer to inner circle ("slicing" the donut"), and then attach the edge of the inner circle to your bodice. You should cut the donut big enough so that the circumference of the inner circle is long enough to wrap half way around you.
I would buy some cheap lycra to practice with before you spend money on the fabric you plan to use on your actual dress.
