Dir. Patrice Leconte.
You never know what might happen when you go through the wrong door…
Anna (Sandrine Bonnaire) walks into tax lawyer William Faber’s (Fabrice Luchini) office, and starts telling him about her serious relationship problems, having mistaken him for his psychoanalyst neighbour. Initially too dumbstruck to point out her mistake, Faber is soon finding himself unable to pull out of the situation, trapped by his curiosity, moved and charmed by his “patient”. He maintains the quiproquo until Anna wises up, confronts him, and storms out. But soon she is back for more…
Leconte (HAIRDRESSER’S HUSBAND, L’HOMME DU TRAIN) is a master storyteller, weaving a highly compelling drama from an unlikely scenario. Watching the highly accomplished performances from the two leads gives the impression of eavesdropping on a very personal ritual, creating a frisson of voyeurism. Leconte, as always, allows us a fascinating insight into the psychology of a highly unconventional and suspect relationship, his light touch still allowing the inherent humourand absurdity of the situation to filter through.
Hitchcokian references abound giving this compelling drama the ominous air of a classic thriller. Hitchcock fans will appreciate the way visual clues as to what is going on are there for the audience to interpret; warning signs, and details that say more about a character than a long explanation, such as Anna’s clothes getting lighter and prettier as she gets her grip back on herself.
I saw this french movie tonight. The review above is a combination of two reviews as I thought neither one did the movie justice  . I thought it was very good.
It also got me thinking about some of the unconcious/accidental choices we make in life and where that choice then leads to, the effect on our lives. It could start off as simply as sitting next to someone on a bus or taking a particular route to go home/work and your life slowly changes, either for the better or for the worse.
