Hey all,

I've read most of the threads about tanning and make up, and still couldn't find a good recommendation.

So I have a few basic questions, and It would be great if everyone could answer:

1. What is the brand of the tanner you use?
2. Does it come off with water?
3. What is your original skin tone?
4. How dark is the color (and how many coats do you apply)?
5. How long does it take to dry?
6. How does it smell?
7. Does it live stains on clothing/costumes?
8. How even does it come out?

I understand that it's pretty individual, but my goal is to create a list of tanners, to help whoever wants to try a new brand and doesn't know which one to choose.

4. after 5 coats it's definitely darker than my original skin, but not nearly dark enough for latin comp.

6. Not bad. :)
7. It does not stain costumes, but sometimes it stains the clothes.
8. very even.

1. What is the brand of the tanner you use? Sun- Sun labs Ultra Dark
2. Does it come off with water? Soap and water (the tint comes off but you are left with a light even tan)
3. What is your original skin tone? Light/medium
4. How dark is the color (and how many coats do you apply)? dark tan- 1 coat for everyday, 2-3 coats for competition ( apply one coat- wash after 4 hours- apply another wait 3 hours- then another)
5. How long does it take to dry? About 30 minutes but you can put your clothes on right away after applying
6. How does it smell? Has a light scent, not nearly as strong of a DHA smell as some brands
7. Does it live stains on clothing/costumes? Does come off slightly on costumes but readily washes out.
8. How even does it come out? very even as long as you blend away the tinted color- which is very easy to do.

I understand that it's pretty individual, but my goal is to create a list of tanners, to help whoever wants to try a new brand and doesn't know which one to choose.

1. Jergens Body Glow Express
2. No
3. Fair
4. Medium-dark, with orange tint. I do 2-3 coats.
5. I let it absorb for 10-15 minutes before putting on clothes. I usually put it on in the evening and shower in the morning.
6. It smells OK out of the bottle, but as it absorbs, DHA smell comes out
7. Yes, some. Not so much once it developed, but some on the sheets as it is drying up. I use old sheets when I am putting it on.
8. It comes out even enough, but there is some tendency for it to concentrate in active areas, like where the edge of the shoe touches the skin.

1. What is the brand of the tanner you use? Pro-Tan competition tanner
2. Does it come off with water? Eventually. ;)
3. What is your original skin tone? Pale.
4. How dark is the color (and how many coats do you apply)? i try for two, though sometimes my skin reacts with extreme dryness and I have to stick with one.
5. How long does it take to dry? Something like thirty minutes to let the developer set, then overnight and shower the developer off in the morning.
6. How does it smell? *I* don't mind it.
7. Does it live stains on clothing/costumes? Not so long as you wash the developer off and don't try to get dressed before you shower.
8. How even does it come out? That's entirely up to the person applying it. If you get it on evenly, it'll be even. If you screw up, it WILL streak.

I think the reason the other threads don't have a consensus about a tanner to recommend is that a lot of it comes down to skin chemistry. What works great on one person will look orange or green on someone else.

1. What is the brand of the tanner you use? Fake Bake aerosol spray
2. Does it come off with water? It'll rinse off a little excess first time you shower
3. What is your original skin tone? Olive undertones
4. How dark is the color (and how many coats do you apply)? 2-3 coats will give you a nice natural looking tan
5. How long does it take to dry? maybe 10 minutes, you want to wait to shower
6. How does it smell? like any other tanner
7. Does it live stains on clothing/costumes? haven't noticed it, it has been my favorite so far
8. How even does it come out? very even! I love it, just go outside to do it or in the shower b/c it will leave you in a cloud of tanning spray

Here are my answers:

1. L'Oreal Sublime bronze Medium. (There is no dark tone lotion where I live).
2. No, but it gets lighter after a shower.
3. Very pale.
4. after 5 coats it's definitely darker than my original skin, but not nearly dark enough for latin comp.

7. It does not stain costumes, but sometimes it stains the clothes.
8. very even.

1. I use the L'Oreal Sublime Bronze Deep (you can order it online pretty easily).
2. No, but it starts to come off after several showers.
3. Fairly pale, pink undertones
4. I do four coats, and it's plenty dark for smooth. It used to be dark enough for am rhythm when I danced that as well.
5. Ditto what you said, but I usually put it on before bed and shower in the morning.
6. Also, not bad. It has a little bit of a smell, but I'm used to it and don't think it's overpowering for others.
7. The only staining I've noticed is more of a build-up over time, particularly when I'm sweating and wearing something light.
8. Provided you rub it in well, it comes out even.

1. What is the brand of the tanner you use?
Mystic Tan (about once a week, or every two weeks; it's pretty flexible) touched up with L'Oreal Sublime Bronze Medium in the interim as needed.

2. Does it come off with water?
No, although most Mystic Tans also spray on a bronzer that comes off when you shower (which according to the company is supposed to be about 6 hours later - I find that if I let mine sit without sweating or showering for as close to 24 hours as I can manage it looks a lot better and lasts longer). The L'Oreal is good too, although I do usually put it on before bed and shower in the morning because there is a lot of sparkle in the mix that looks fine on the floor but is a little over the top for, say, the grocery store.

3. What is your original skin tone?
Total darkness cave-dwelling fish white.

4. How dark is the color (and how many coats do you apply)?
With the Mystic Tan, I have gradually built it up to a reasonable level of darkness and the L'Oreal on its own would require about two to three coats. But it's been awhile since I've seen the actual real color of my un-DHA-altered skin. My current color is not dark enough for competition but I could easily ramp it up within three or so days.

5. How long does it take to dry?
Mystic - dries almost instantly, develops over the course of 24 hours. L'Oreal - dries quickly (less than 10 minutes), develops over the course of about six or eight hours.

6. How does it smell?
I like the smell of DHA, but neither the Mystic nor the L'Oreal smell particularly strong to me.

7. Does it live stains on clothing/costumes?
Not that I've seen, and I sweat like it's my job (which is why I am always re-applying tanner). I also wear a lot of black.

8. How even does it come out?
Mystic - super even. L'Oreal - provided you know what you are doing (I also always wear latex gloves to apply), very even.
