so heres the question does novice up through champ start after one reaches open? and how does the US system compare?

Yes.

For Amateurs, Novice is the beginning open* level, following three syllabus levels.

Amateur

Syllabus (closed):
- Bronze
- Silver
- Gold

Open:
- Novice
- Pre-Championship
- Championship

Pro/Am

You will see Open Pro/Am performed in parallel with Syllabus Pro/Am - some programming differences may be seen on your local channel . . .

*Beware that like a lot of English words, 'open' has multiple meaning
