Those of you who dance different styles ..... do you find it difficult to switch between the two?

As an example, I had a private lesson last night where we worked on arm styling, grace and poise. Immediately after we had a WCS showcase lesson where I had to sharpen up my turns and be less "graceful" and more "sexy". I could not get into the rhythum until about halfway through the lesson. I referred to it as having my "flouncy" button stuck in the on position.

Anyone else have difficulty adjusting, and how do you do it? Is it a matter of flicking a switch or do you have to work your way into it? :?:

Yes, sometimes I get in a a particular dance mood and have a hard time switching dances. I remember one day I practices wc swing all day and we were have a salsa night later that evening. My body felt like it actually forgot how to do salsa for a little bit.

I find it tough. For instance this Tuesady I have a salsa private, then go do AT, then go do salsa. Can you imagine switching back and forth like that? What helps is listening to the appropriate muisc inbetween. So I listen to salsa and go to private salsa lesson. Then hop in car and play At while going to At lesson. Then after that hop in car and play salsa while going to social dancing.

I don't have a problem with it; I can switch pretty easily.

It takes a lot of practice, but you have to really have your musicality down to make the transition to "flip the switch". The advantage of ballroom is that you have to do that, whereas for most swingers and salseri, it's more challenging to change tempi or even musical styles sometimes. (Hence, the lindy kids want things sped up more to do balboa rather than slow down to do WCS. The salsa people just want another 7-minute song to meld into the previous one. :) )

I suppose one thing you can do is get someone to mix you a practice dance CD, and while you're listening to it, get an idea for what dance(s) you can/should do to each track.
