View Full Version : Rueda in "From Justin to Kelly"
Ok, I was flipping channels last night when I caught part of a rueda in a movie. Looked up the movie - it was "From Justin to Kelly". It was really brief, the song was weird, the timing was off, but hey, it was rueda!

I think that's performed by a group in Miami. Check out www.salsaracing.com

That's Henry Ruiz's studio - he's an amazing dancer and instructor. He was the official dance instructor for last year's Latin Grammy's according to a buddy of mine.

Yep. My new partner & I are working through some moves using his videos as well as some other great materials from Cuba 8) .
I am paying particular attention to the female's little tap before weight change. It's a nice little touch & not commonly observed from the ones in Cuba. This might help me through some of the moves that I had trouble with earlier (can't seem to get that vacila la  )!
So I caught the final 2-5 minutes of this movie again, last night.
The final dance choreography with about 100+ dancers was pretty well done. Lots of body waves and hip hop.

I haven't seen any of his videos etc...however, if the tap is, for instance, like the tap of the second half of the basic musical phrase that preps for vacila la it makes all the difference...i.e. left, right, left, tap...and then leader guides you into vacila la. :)
So is is the timing of the rueda off in this movie? Is the movie any good?

Are the two of you referring to the tap on 8?

Yeah, I think the timing looked off, and the song was odd, too.
I can't sit thru the whole movie, so I don't think it's worth watching. Maybe if you do rent it, you may wanna fast forward to the dancing bits.

I haven't seen the videos, but from my rueda experience...
Tap on 8 as it is part of the prep for the next muiscal phrase of 8. The tap, done by both follower and leader, results in a increase in tension between the two which is released by the move, that is the vacila la in this case. The tap on 8 is done for sombrero, abenico, el dedo, balsero, besito, siete, siete con coca cola, vacila la dame una...
The tap is done on the 4 for dil que no.
Unless the tap being referred to is the device for keeping the beat. Many people do this tap of foot. This is different from the taps described above as the taps that increase tension are done by bringing that foot in towards the other foot.
