I don't really know about the specifically salsa scene, but the fairly active NY USABDA (ballroom) chapter has a discussion board on their site at www.nyusabda.org which overlaps into other social partner dances some and tends to include event announcements.

Pm or email borikensalsero. He knows NYC well and is helpful. Also ask Pacion as she was there recently, just this past month. You are going to NYc on the 20th!! Are you be any chance that you are attending the NYC salsa congress, 19th-22nd. I would think that would be where you could get your salsa kick....

Dates:
August 19 - 22, 2004
Thursday thru Sunday

Location:
The Hilton Hotel
53rd Street and Ave of the Americas

And if you want to plan even further ahead the congress will be on labor day weekend for 2005,2006, and 2007!!

A link is here: NYC Salsa Congress (http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&q=ny+salsa+congress)

Well, I've been invited to a wedding that weekend but maybe by then I'll have figured out an easy way to get into NYC and go meet up with you (and everyone else) during the week.

In the meantime, Borikensalsero is your man...

It is a good thing that you are staying till the 5th, because there is going to be dance night after dance night after the congreso ends. I would suggest you go to the congreso, everyone and their mother is in NY City is going to be there. The copa usually plays A$$ and tries to capitalize on the congreso by having their own salsa congreso during the same days.

Anyways, because of the congreso, the following monday to thursday of the week there will be hot jaming dances at Flamingos on Monday, Jimmy Anton on tuesday, Mad about mambo social on Wednesday, and Cache on thursday. hopefully, everyone won't be dead tired as last year to go out the rest of the week.

Hopefully you can go to the congreso, I think it is 60 US Dollars for the night passes. If not the following days after the congress there will be dances, as I mentioned above, which usually run 10 US Dollars, each for entry. The party starts wednesday the 18th of august, with David Melendez B-Day party in the bronx at the Wild Palm, my favoritest floor and club to dance in.

I'll give you my contact info so you know how to find me when you get here. :D On2 HEAVEN BABY!! It's going to seem like a cult thing!

This is the link to visit for anything happening in NY City Slasa Seen. It is very up-to-date. A few events are missing here and there, but the bulk of what salsa in NY City is about is there.

Just in case you intend to attend the congress, you should make sure you do get your ticket via their website TODAY for begining tomorow, the pre-sales are over and the ticket price goes up...

Hope you'll have a blast over there, I have a friend going to NYC to (though she will probably do more hip-hop than salsa) and she asked me yesterday if I would visit her for the congress...

I can't, I'll be broke from LA and Cannes ! *sigh*

Sorry... I'm already here (NYC) for the ballroom comp. The dance colleague/partner with me is not into club dancing at all so ... oh well.

But I do have to buy my ticket for the Carolina Salsa Congress (http://www.carolinacongress.com/).

Hey Jamaicanspice,
I am not sure if this is your first time to NY, but you should have an awesome time and your timing could not have been better as the NYC Salsa congress is going on during that same time!! You will arrive right in the 'thick of things'. I see you have been given some great info so far by the other posts.
I am born and bred from NY, have been dancing salsa here for a bit and am of Jamaican descent. My excitement in seeing your pose made me join this site just to post this reply. I am glad to see some JA grown salsa representation.
I will take a personal interest in meeting you when you arrive. It would be great to put us on the salsa map.
