View Full Version : How Much Do I Need to Tranform for Tango

I noticed that, ever since I started tango, changes happened about me:
- My shoe purchasing accelerated. The first pair of dance shoes accompanied me for the first 8 months, then the second, the third, the fourth and the fifth came within the next 4 months. I really didn't dance that much to need this many pairs, but there is a special reason for buying each pair of them.
- I bought more dresses/blouses, tried more styles of pants, though most of them I still don't feel comfortable wearing and thus stay forever in the closet.
- I color my hair (to cover the gray) more frequently.
- I shower more frequently. On tango days, I have to shower and shampoo right before and after the milonga/practica.
- I hug people when greeting or saying goodbyes. I was greatly surprised when I did it the first time.
There are just a couple of things I am not able to change yet:
- I still don't wear makeups. Soon after I started dating my husband (then boyfriend), I quit wearing makeups, because he was allergic to the smell of chemicals. I don't use perfumes nor much scented soaps/shampoos for the same reason. Many years had passed, now, I don't feel comfortable even with the idea of applying makeups to my face. I would feel dirty with the foreign particles plugging my pores. I don't like most of the artificial fragrance either.
- I still don't dress up much. Yes, I do wear dresses or blouses, but am only comfortable with the plain style.
Recently, I start to wonder, for how much longer I would still hold on to my last two old habits.

When I got into AT I was an avid contra dancer. My dance wardrobe consisted of t-shirts, shorts and white socks. That had to change.
As a beginning tango dancer I tried to look the part; fancy pants and shirts. As a more experienced and capable dancer, my dress code is a little more relaxed, but not as relaxed as some younger people.

Ran across this yesterday. Changed a few words here and there...
Is Fashion Part of Understanding the Dance?
I wish I got my act together much sooner when it came to fashion. It all started to click when when I realized that Argentine Tango was part of something bigger…that there was more to the dance then just learning how to dance well.
Argentine Tango, if removed from the influences that were present when it was originally developed, is awkward and lacking. As I get better at dancing, I enjoy listening to better dance music. As I listen to better music, I get better at dancing. As I walk better, and connect better, I want to dress more vintage. As I start to dress more vintage I begin to walk better and connect better. Funny how this all comes together.
My Argentine Tango is so much more complete now that I am 1) dressing better, 2) playing reading tangomonkey's analysis of El Choclo, 3) listening to better dance music and 4)listening to more music from the Golden Age. I can finally see how it all works together and feeds the rest. Over the past few years, I have seriously become more interested in all things tango; looking beyond just the dance technique.
So, in case you missed the message going round town; Classy Is Cool. Vintage is cool. I even feel it may be a critical part to understanding the dance better.

Do you suppose the milongueros/as of the Golden Age dressed vintage?

I'm sure they didn't call it that. Hey, one of our local AT teachers showed up at practica in a very nice black suit, white shirt and tie. It was sort of comical when he started loudly clapping the rhythm during a vals, but I sympathize with him on that one.

I realize that I am in the tiny minority here, but I grew up being taught that girls/women look best with little to no make-up. To this day, I can't help but think that women who wear a lot of make-up look an awful lot like clowns. Hold on to your habit of not wearing make-up as long as you can!! Fight the system!

I am bitterer and fatter than I was when I started A.T, but it's not necessarily related.

i wasnt being serious. i think shoes are important for dancing but one good pair is enough,
though i know ladies require several, with varying heel height or to match different outfits...
re make-up, not necessary; especially if you have face contact its preferable to not have powder, but be comfortable with what you chose.
