View Full Version : So, what shall we talk about?

I have heard/read several times that on a 'first date' one should not talk about one's exes, in a good way or bad way, one shouldn't. Why do people still do it? Don't they hear/read the same things as I do?

I kind of like it if a guy mentions his ex in sometime in the first few dates. Guys can be pretty transparent, and I use those kinds of conversations to figure out whether to dump the guy or proceed.

Pygmalion, I agree. I'd like to know if there's Baby Momma Drama, if this is a rebound situation or if there is more than one (player mentality). I'm sure guys use this tactic as well. But depending on how much or how less, I can usually tell what's up and if I should run like the wind. Whew, glad I'm not looking. Don't have the patience these days. :?

I agree too, in a sense, with what both of you said. But you know the saying "too much information"? Add to that, the realisation that when you thought you were meeting as 'friends', it seems he has other thoughts

07-06-2004, 07:42 PM
Okay. So don't dump him. Just don't call him, either. Let him call you. Given him time to clarify his thoughts a bit. If he's constantly talking about his ex, he hasn't completely let go yet, but he's probably considering it. Now is your best opportunity to take a strong stance.
... Not that one should play heartless romantic games, of course ...

There are all sorts of good things to talk about on a first date if you are creative, ask questions, listen, and flirt with confidence.
And I'd definitely stay away from exes, jokes, negativity, and pessimism.

I have one for you. I used to be a volunteer at an afterschool tutoring program many moons ago. This guy (a highschool science teacher), who was a volunteer as well, had been interested in taking me out and I kept saying no. The last thing I wanted was drama around the children. Anyway, finally after a year, had known him for a while, made my position clear regarding the children and how I did not want this interfere with them, I finally said okay. BIG mistake. At dinner, this JOKER did not like the way his meal was presented so he started spitting and pushing some of it on the floor. I'm sitting there and saying to myself, "LISTEN TO YOUR SUBCONCIOUS MIND SOMETIMES, IT HAS BEEN TELLING YOU STAY AWAY FROM THIS MORON FOR A YEAR!" To top it off, he thought he was impressing me by all the STUPID comments he was making during this episode. I wanted to crawl under the table and not come out until everyone had left the restaurant. Anyways, after the embarassing dinner, he had the nerve to ask if I wanted to go to a comedy club. I lost it and started laughing histerically and said, "You mean we weren't just there?"   What a jerk! You'd expect better behavior from a science teacher but.... First and LAST date with him.

I can't think of being ever on any really bad dates.
The closest thing I can find in my memory is the time when a woman asked me what I now call "the age question". She wanted to know how old I was on the first date, and when she found out I was a month over her age limit, she told me she didn't want to date any one a month or more over her age limit. Course I asked her why that was an issue. She replied that her experiences with older men were that they demanded way too much of her time, and liked to tell her how she should spend her time. I mentioned that I couldn't imagine that being an issue with me because I was a busy person like her, and wouldn't want someone telling me how I should be spending my time either. That seemed to freeze the conversation for a moment, yet there was only one date, and I didn't ask for a second.
The fact that she was classifying me as an older man struck me has humorous, I was certainly older then her, but I'm not even middle aged, yet.

Ah...and a man must know when it's time to retire from his flirting ... at least for the time being. ;)
Goodnight from this side of the world to your's!

Nope, but it certainly presents us with a very romantic alternative! :)
   Are you suggesting that Sabor's and my flirting isn't romantic?   What could possibly be more romantic than auctioning one's loved one's lime green socksies on ebay

Pacion:
No comparison intended, just another opportunity!
Romance, like beauty, is in the eye of the beholder. I'm sure your romantic flirtations with Sabor are not best measured by me, but better by the two of you or by those with more info then I. ;)
Perhaps I should have phrased it differently.
(Seems like my lack of knowledge extends to the lime green sock reference, but feel free to enlighten me for I suspect more humor awaits.)

Ok, Salsachinita ... might not be a good idea, yet I'm taking the bait.
My lack of knowledge shows again in not having the foggiest idea as to what you are refering to with "the plan". If you have a moment, feel free to clue me in on this topic. I suspect more humor awaits here, too! :)

   If you actually go to search & type in "the plan", I'm sure you will get plenty of clues!
It started off basically as a plan to help SD fund his dance tour downunder. Since then a few other members have decided that they'd like to take part........the last I heard was that it involves SD & a bank somwhere, a getaway car driven by Boriken, a few power tools donated by MapleLeaf and Taita as our navigator!
My role? Waiting at this end with a mini bus enough for all the members involved 8) .............
 Still waiting............

Well, await humor must  As for romance, sigh Sabor is too busy walking up and down the street where I live. The problem is, that the pavement has always stayed beneath his feet before. Then all at once, he is several stories high, knowing that he is on the street where I live.
Before I knew it, he was asking passersby if there were lilac trees in the heart of town or whether they could hear a lark in any other part of town.
I knew he had finally lost it, when they asked him in turn whether enchantment poured out of ev'ry door and he responded, "No, it's just on the street where Pacion lives! And oh! The towering feeling, just to know somehow she is near. The overpowering feeling, that any second she may suddenly appear!" :?
But Dance Poet, the incredible thing is, people stop and stare and that does not bother Sabor, for there's no where else on earth that he would rather be. He will let the time go by, because he doesn't care so long as he is on the street where I live. 8)
and yes, if you should recognise anything in what I have just written, it was severally plagerised from "On the street where you live" from My Fair Lady
What was this thread about again

Ummm, Pacion, did you add a few DVDs to your video collection, recently? First it was Fiddler on the Roof, now My Fair Lady. I think a nice reference to Seven Wives for Seven Brothers would be pretty interesting for you and Sabor. Some cool dance duel scenes in that one. :P
