View Full Version : Fights, brawls and offensive behaviour at dances

I was at a typical pub the other night, listening to a band and, as per usual, some drunk guys started talking dirty with a few girls and propositiong us. There was also a mob jostling among themselves.
It struck me that I've never been frightened or witnessed a fight at a dancing event. I've been propositioned, particularly at salsa events (and many ballroom events), but that's just par for the course when you're a girl, right girls?
I think it has a lot to do with the genteel, well-definied nature of dancing (men lead, women follow and, in theory, it's all very gallant and gentlemanly), but also that, generally, dancers don't drink much more than water or a few beers at dancing events.
Has anyone else witnessed a fight at a dancing event? Perhaps dancers are just a more gentle breed?

No .........
I have never seen a brawl at a dancing event / club, but I think it has more to do with the fact that guys who like a fight are less likely to go for the dancing scene. They are the guys that make fun of other guys dancing and call them "poofs" and the like.
I've never witnessed a fight at a ballroom dancing event either. One factor that may contribute, is the lack of alcohol at such events.

Ballroom dancers are too busy fighting with their partners to pick fights with anyone else.

OK, someone else who hasn't been to late night at a WCS convention :-)
The closest to a fight I've seen is a few instances of yelling.

Oh, Chris, that's so funny _ and so true!
Jon, I know dancers who drink like fish, but, from my experiences, the majority don't get sooooo sozzled, that they can't think about dancing!

I have never seen it either... wait... there was once... they didn't really fight, but they were about to... and the girls stopped them! And it was all about ego! One of them did a dangerous neck drop and the girl hit her head on the shoe of another girl, dancing nearby... the guy dancing with the other girl attentioned the first guy... and the first guy jumped to punch him! Gosh... the two girls intervened, and it stopped... and all because of the ego of the first guy (he is very arrogant and self-sufficient)...

Nope, never seen a fight at any dance event; in fact, I've never even seen an argument. :)
I've seen a fight, and have heard about a half dozen or so incidents. Pardon my singling out one particular group, but every incident that I know of has involved a Latino - usually drunk.
And I agree that fights don't happen nearly as much in the dance scene as it does in the regular club/bar scene.

I fact I never saw a fight at any club back in the days when I attended the clubs. Guess I've been lucky. :)
I did see some quarrels which could have resulted in a fight, but never happened.

I have never seen a fight. If I hear raised voices I start heading for the opposite direction. I have noticed that people are sometimes/often drawn to such situations and will stand and watch. My Dad always told me as a teenager, head in the opposite direction. You never if/when things are going to start flying and you might be the innocent bystander who gets hurt. I still do that to this day meanwhile looking for my mobile/cellphone to call for assistance/police if need be :?
Along the same lines is the availability of drugs. I was speaking with a colleague today about drinks at clubs and she mentioned that they thought one of her friends had had her drink spike with liquid ecstasy. Not sure what other names it might go by. Apparently they took her to a doctor who ran some tests and that is how they came to the conclusion. I said that I was amazed that people know where to buy this stuff. I know that it is available, because people are obviously getting it but, I just would not have a clue - unless I were to stand around on street corners :? . My colleague then said that when she goes out, the night never ends without them having been offered something and jokingly said that she is not sure what that says about the places she goes to. I am not aware of anyone doing drugs within the salsa scene and re the drinking, yes, I know there have been incidents, some quite big ones, but I think they are the exception rather than the rule. As I told my colleague, you need your coordination for salsa/partner dancing :?

That's bad about the drink spiking Pacion, but something that I have always been very careful of. I never leave a drink unattended and then finish it off. If I do have to leave a drink, it will either be with a trusted friend or I will buy another. Not worth the risk for the price of another drink.
I have seen fights at pubs, outside pubs, on the street, etc, but always try to walk away and / or keep on the opposite side of the road. Have to be careful as well if you are driving near a pub, because a fight can spill over onto the road without warning. Have known people to have to swerve to avoid a pub fight that has kept going out on the street.
