Links do go bad sometimes. I edited the post and included some mirrors to the movie. I REALLY appreciate you letting me know about this, SeanBoogie.

David from Santa Anna. His waving is unreal. He's better now, and the animating he does near the end of his piece, while good, is much better. Animating to me has always been the hardest thing in B-Boyin' to me.

Only by association. Most of my hip hop conections are from back East.

I thought on the video they said his name was Jason or possibly Nathan from Santa Ana. ??? I could be mistaken but that's what the crowd seemed to be shouting as he began his stuff.

Like any skill... lots of practice and dedication... and in this case a decent amount of raw freakish talent.

How do you even begin to learn that skill? Is there a way to teach it...as in, is there a class somewhere? It just looks like a LOT of fun and almost like they don't have any bones in their body!

It's quite a hoot to try. Not that I'm any good at it, mind you, but I took hip hop lessons for a while. And, if nothing else, I got lots of laughs out of it!  Seriously, though, the teacher I had was very good at doing it, not so good at breaking it down. I got my best "value" in terms of learning by hanging out in front of a mirror. For HOURS. And still, my moves look TINY and timid. Oh well. *sigh* But it should be a breeze for you, since you already do bellydancing. Very similar in my book. Lots of isolations.

I can Pop and Lock as well as break dance. I learned many years ago. It's one of those skills that comes in handy about once per year. I have a short routine where I start out with some Pops and Lock and then do some footwork on the ground ending in a backspin. It's great at parties, especially when everybody is intoxicated and they weren't expecting it. My wife hides in the corner while the crowd go nuts (not sure if they are laughing with me or at me, but I don't really care as long as I get to do my routine once a year).

Like in all styles, hip-hop instructors come in various degrees of skill in the dance and skill in teaching. A high degree in one does not assure a high dregree of skill in the other.

Its all about isolation of muscles and then moving them in sequence. It creates the illusion of "Waves" where there are no joints. Where do you live? I might be able to recommend an instructor in your area.

I believe there are a lot of Lindy Hoppers in LA that combine Hip Hop with Lindy Hop, right?

Since this thread has been pointed at I'd thought I'd give a quick word about David "Elsewhere" Bernal. He was recently in the Movie You Got Served (which if you are a fan of hip hop this has some of the best dancing in a major hollywood release ever, both west coast funk and east coast breakin' are prominantly featured). and figures prominantly in "Detours" a video about advancing the art form of b-boyin'.

For more clips and his profile check out http://www.detoursvideo.com/Elsewhere.htm

They were awesome! My 9-year old son was sitting next to me saying "how do they do that?" Seems like these young men would fare well in ballroom someday as they have a good sense of body movement and isolations.
