It's not really "country", as it's old irish/scotch, i know, but it's been country-ized from what I've seen. Some of my best friends in the world square dance, and it looks fun, but I wouldn't have the coordination for it (I did pretty bad in the 6th grade pe class, even though I loved it)

Although I CAN do the electric slide, some of the twostep, the bus stop, and what's the other- I think the catfish or something.

They'd love to lay hands on this forum though, I'd bet.. :D

Modern Western (aka "Club") Square Dancing, if that's what's you're referring to, doesn't have "steps" or "patterns" in the partner dance sense, it's just walking one step/beat to the music. What you do need to be able to remember is where to go in response to the calls, which is more of a mental visualization skill than a physical coordination skill (indeed in the most advanced forms, MWSD turns into something that's as much puzzle solving as it is dance).

You might also try contra dancing, which operates along similar principles but has a very small set of calls to remember, so small that people who have never done any kind of dancing before can do it and enjoy it on their first night.

It looks like tons of fun, but, oddly enough, few of my city-fied friends do it. I wonder one could find out more about the dance form. I seem to remember running across a square dnce socity web site some time ago. I wonder if there are step lists and descriptions out there. Probably...
