View Full Version : How old are you?

DanceMentor
08-12-2003, 12:28 PM
I'm curious of the age group in the Dance Forums.
A. 18 or below
B. 19 to 30
C. 31-40
D. 41-50
E. 51-60
F. 61-70
G. Over 70

I would be C (31-40). I'm 34 years old.
I gave ranges just in case you don't want to give your exact range.

DM,
Do you really think everyone will respond to this???

I'm not serious here . . .

How about H. Over 21?

I just wanted to say "hi" and welcome you (http://www.dance-forums.com/guidelines.php) to the forums!

I wish I would have started when I was 16. You'll be the best at your studio in a few years if you stick with it. BTW, in your profile, what is EMO?

Vince A

Hi hermia13, and welcome . . .

Ditto on wishing that I was 16 when I started.

Info you . . . in our studio, we have a young lady that started when she was 12. She just turned 15, is an advance dancer in at least 8 dances, and, she is knocking on the door of turning "Pro" - if she didn't have to contend with school and if she could teach dance. She spends every spare minute in the studio, yet she finds time for many other social things in her life, plus time for her family and riding her horse.

How bad do you want it???

This is really personal, but for the sake of statistical accuracy ...
I'm a C.

BTW most of my ballroom dancing cronies are C's or D's, as well.
Around here, there are two really active ballroom dancing demographics --
the college crowd, and the forty-somethings. Salsa folks seem to
come in all ages.

hullo everyone.
now, i didnt really see a 'introduce yourself' thread, so this will have to do.

i would fit into that A class. i will be 18 on monday.
i'm heavy into trad. jazz dance of the 20-early 40s, and have been into it for about 5 years.

i guess you could call me a lindy fundamentalist/separatist.

anyway, i'm adam. known as nocturne on other forums.

One of the best ballroom/social dances I've ever had was with a gentleman who couldn't be less than eighty. Dancing forever, it seems. Gold Star level, at least. And so, so smooth. He led me into stuff I didn't know existed and made me look good doing it. :D

Gotta smile, just remembering. :D

Well, even after the fact, you're still the only person to ever wish me a happy thirty-oneth! And with hugs and kisses too! All those other people are so un-original...its thirty-first from all of them...which means that your lunch treat will taste just that much better.

Looking forward to it Jenn...just keep me posted regarding your SD plans.

No vegan crack cakes for me thank you very much! Blech!

As for my current eating habits, for the past couple of months I've been really working at getting back in shape. So, in addition to regular visits to the gym, I've really been tightening up my eating habits. Lots of protein powders and supplements, fruits and veggies, complex carbs, little fat, lower sodium, etc.,...

I tried the protein powder before....it was a bit hard for me to digest :?

I myself turned 27 this year....and though some people are afraid of aging, I actually think that getting older has more pros that cons....better understanding of people and life and more appreciative of the things that I used to take for granted

I used to do the Pritikin regiment (a bit health conscious since I'm involved in cancer research)...but ever since I started dancing, I've drop some weight and have since tried weight lifting to hopefully gain some muscle & upping my protein intake, but it is so far not happening..... :(

Yes, I remember we did some square dancing, too. And maybe the Virginia Reel or something else. It might have worked if the people in charge had chosen some things that were a little closer to us. Maybe some disco or something. I remember the movie Tango, which I thought was terrible as a movie, but it had the scene with the kids learning Tango in primary school.

I feel for all you 18 (and under!) year olds out there, for I too (and Neodevin, who is 13 hours my senior  ) am in the A range...but only for 21 more days :D Trust me: when you are the youngest person on a collegiate ballroom dance team, you count down the days until your next birthday  At least you don't have to stay in the hotel room watching Miss Cleo while all the other team members go out to the bars when you go to competitions

However, even though I started a few months ago and I am told that 18 is very young to be starting ballroom, if I have one regret, its not starting even earlier. I think it would have done me a lot of good both mentally and physically to have such a positive influence as ballroom in my life at age 16 :D So hang in their girly, just think of it: you could be dancing (and winning!) at Nationals by the time your 21st birthday rolls around!

Hmm, I used to get carded even just a few months ago. This one bar/restaurant always carded me and I finally asked one of the waitresses what the deal was. She said "you have such a baby face!" which made me turn bright red.

(hint to the ladies, most guys HATE to be called "baby-face", myself included!)

I said "take a closer look, see the gray hairs? I'm almost 30!"

I decided to grow a beard again since I got tired of being mistaken for being a lot younger than I am. Since when I was 20 and had a beard people thought I was 30, now that I am almost that age it seems to fit somehow. :)

So I cannot be slective with whom I flirt with, but depending on how my partner responds to me the flirting does vary. Similarly I'm not selective with whom I get physically close to when dancing, but again I'm aware of my partner's comfort level and adjust to suit her. :)

i'm 16 years old..

i sometimes really wish i could spend more of my freetime dancing..

i started when i was a baby practically, the first thing i did was ballet. i did that till i was 9 or so, then i changed to jazz dancing. after 2 or 3 years, i stopped and only continued dancing at parties.. a year or 2 later i started jazz dancing again in a different studio, and stayed there until a month ago or so, when our teacher (aged about 20..) announced that she got a different job and couldn't continue giving us lessons anymore.. i almost cried when she told us that...

i've had so many phases in my life sofar when i just wanted to be a professional dancer, go to dancing school and all that. but what happens after you're 35? you can't carry on, you gotta stop, or become a teacher yourself.. but that's not what i wanted.. so i'm still at school and am only continuing to dance at parties again.
but now i'm having a crazy phase again, this time it's just south-american dancing, though.. i'd sooo much like to be able to dance salsa properly, and samba aswell (as i'm half brazilian) and all that kind of stuff. but i just don't have the time or the money to start learning that kind of stuff properly.. pretty frustrating.

At 44, I'm a solid "D". But actually, I'm as old as Jack Benny, too. In fact, I've been as old as Jack Benny for so long, my own children don't know how old I am.

"but what happens after you're 35? you can't carry on, you gotta stop, or become a teacher yourself"

My teacher just turned 72 on Monday. He is still actively performing as a tango dancer, and has even started working with/training a new partner. He teaches privates 5 hours a day, at least 3 classes a week, and performs 2-4 times per month or more, depending on the season of the year. He even got offered a 6 month contract to be in the new Cirque de Soleil show in Las Vegas, but he had to turn it down because his partner couldn't do the gig. Severty-two, with no sign of stopping. He still works out with weights, still does tai chi and ballet, and still studies to improve his art. No, my sweet, you don't have to stop at 35, and I'm so eternally grateful he chooses to teach. No one else could have been so patient to teach ME.

And he has lots of stories about famous ballet dancers who began training in their 30's and went on to become principal dancers in professional companies in their forties and fifties. He's always telling me to stop putting these arbitrary limits on myself.

Your teacher sounds like one fabulous role model. The story you told last year about his wisdom when the music/dance moved you emotionally, says a lot about what kind of person and teacher he is. You are truly blessed to have him, as I suspect he is to have you. 8)

LOL. I thought it was funny. It's all in the tone of voice. She really was just saying what she thought, and she really did believe Mom was twenty-nine. Besides, smacking her would have defeated the purpose of being there -- showing the kids how cool engineers are. 8)

Kids say the darndest things. You've just gotta laugh. Actually, I think the utter shock on the teacher's face was the funniest thing of all.  The kids had obviously been prepped on how to behave with company in the classroom, and that one little girl was out of control. On my friend's daughter's 7th birthday, she told me she's 7, and then turned to her mom and asked "how old are you mommy??". My friend's in her 30s, but just to amuse her daughter, she said "mommy's only 17", her daughter instantly went "17??, mommy you are OLD!". It was one of my best laughs! :D

Humor is a much better response than anger. If you can laugh at yourself, I figure you're still okay and connected with the right dimension of reality.

One of my best and favorite actress friends is a fabulous lady who started doing stand-up comedy in her early sixties. She's now 81 (or more). One of her best jokes:

"I'm Betty Perry, and I'm old. I'm older than dirt. I'm so old, I was a cocktail waitress at the last supper."

When my kids get after me for being tired, or not cool, I just use that joke. It's still funny, no matter how many times I tell it.

I'm afraid to say how old I am...
Older than Vince, even!

True story:
At 19, I got hired at The Famous Place because of my enthusiasm and dance ability. We trained long and hard, 4 hours a night, 5 nights a week, 3 months, 10 dances. We were tested by a judge, the young Mr. Sam Sodano, (I have pix) who later performed with his partner, the first real pro's I saw in action. Wow. This was before Championship Ballroom Dancing on PBS. And it was while watching just that, crying, in my early 30's, that my boyfriend said, "Why don't you go back to it? You're not too old!" So I did. Thinking that I was "old" then...hah!
But I have had a wonderful career, enjoyed teaching for a long, long time.
I sure wish there were someplace like this to discuss things then. I had to stumble along with trial and error.
So, all you "young-uns," Dance your @$$ off and ENJOY!!! :D

I'm old! I'm a grandma.

I'm 46 this June. I have had all three of my daughters involved in dance since 1990. I instruct, mainly soloist now days, been a cheer advisor, hap-hazard volunteer TEAM_MOM and chief cook and bottle washer. Oldest kid did ballet, and now at 25 she is into Trible Belly Dancing. Middle kid strictly jazz, now into music. Youngest is an instructor of jazz, modern, and lyrical at local studio as well as VP of her high school dance/drill team. Very accomplished kid - I don't know who she got it from - it wasn't me... :(

Eat live and breath dance. What life?

usually it's the other way around - the person hasn't lived life to the fullest and is therefore looking for ways to validate his/her existence....

usually it's the other way around - the person hasn't lived life to the fullest and is therefore looking for ways to validate his/her existence....and why would that be a crisis? why wouldn't that be progress...I mean it really depends on what someone picks to do for validation doesn't it?

whether or not it's progress varies by individual - many ppl come to realization that they've been wasting their life and decide to treasure every moment they have from then on but there are of course those who choose questionable activities to try to capture their youth and there are the select few who literally drops everything they have (their family, their job..etc) to search for new meaning of life - not saying what's right or wrong but just simply that when we reach a certain point in life, we look back and try to search for something that has defined the days we lived.

I don't know if I've answered any of these threads yet, but my new answer today is "old enough to know better than to answer this question."

Heh.

I think I answered this thread already. And my answer ran along the lines of, "You must be bonkers if you think I'm telling you that!"

Rosa :)

PS: What I think I really said was, "There are some things a woman should never reveal, and her age is one of them!"

I see no reason to change my point of view...
