Hmmm...theer are soem serious IRUers over here. I wimped out at 2:30, but that was because I wanted to wake up at 8:00 this morning. That's my excuse. Nice night dancing...I'll report the detaills in the other threads so look for more info there. :)
part of it is the time zone difference, but getting up around noon is the result (in my case).

i'm quite looking forward to it. tacad & renee know who i'm taking, btw.
where do you go dancing? maybe we can do a roadtrip down to BisB, Atomic or Imperial someday if you go to any of those places.

I used to go to BiB, Avant Garde, South Coast Ballroom, which is now Atomic, DanScene (which is now B1/DanScene, B1 being BiB),& Imperial, which I don't really care for much.
I have not gone out dancing much in the past few years because of my heart condition, but I want to build up my stamina to do more. I NEED to dance.
I would like to meet the CA contingent of DF, but please be patient and kind. It's a little scary. Hard to understand for a young, healthy dancer, I'm sure.

I heard and understood. But I'm not sure what to say.
I started to tell you about my girlfriend whose heart condition was discovered when she was a child. The doctors said she'd never live to age twenty. Now she's in her early fifties with five healthy children. She's taken it easier than say, I'd have to. But she's lived.
Then I thought. Hmm. What if your situation is different and you have to take it even easier than she does? So I decided to say nothing.
So I'm still not sure what to say, except this. I feel you. Good luck with finding a balance. And I admire your courage in trying to take it on ... I mean life, and the dance ... despite very real physical limitations. Good luck. God bless.
Let me know how it goes. PM if you want. 8) :friend:

Not entirely true CCCC. While it is different, I have a chroinic bad back. Most of the time with lots of stretching, regular chiropractic visits, and being careful, I manage jsut fine. When it has gone out, however, I've had trouble even walking for up to tw months. Right when it happens I can't even sleep because each little shift in body position is so agonizing. Fortunately I know how to take care of it and it rarely goes entirely out on me... but when it does I wonder if I'll ever be able to walk without pain again... let alone actually dance. As the years pass I also wonder if I'll be able to keep recovering each and every time since, even if not regular, they do add up. I know that when my back is out the frustarion of my inability to dance is only compounded by not knowing when (or, G-d forbid, even if) I'll be bale to dance again.
Just to be clear though, I'm not griping. I am blessed in so many ways. Just wanted to let you know that I, for one, can at least somewhat empathize. I *do* feel for you... and am always here to talk if you want or need. :friend:

I think that's how a lot of us feel- we at DF had a lot of different experiences which have taken us away from dance, and we know the suffering that goes with it.(Maybe not all of us and not to the extent you have suffered) But we wish you the BEST! :D

you're welcome & because you & tacad privately asked for more details: a fellow dance enthusiast reserved a table for some of us the sky room last night. the restaurant is at the top of a building near the long beach shoreline, affording a wonderful view. (yes, don, the cheapest entree was $25 - and i probably scored big pts. by having a gourmet dog biscuit for her beagle katie when i picked leigh up. she didn't even bark at me)
i brought someone who was a wonderful companion for the evening. (see avatar). and the live band was terrific - while the musicians were all of latin heritage & for all appearances looked like a typical latin band (granted, the accordian was unexpected), they exhibited pretty amazing versatility - yeah, the latin stuff was great, including a great rendition of "i need to know" but they also did some serious swing, & some great WCS music, even some elvis! right now, should i be able to afford them, they'd be my first choice for a live band for my wedding reception (which would include a fair number of serious dancers). and for those of you interested, the band is called "tino & his orchestra" http://www.tino-productions.com/ but the website seems to be down.
the only drawback was the limited amount of dance floor - and the surprising number of other dancers outside our party of 5 couples. (btw, don the WD & the partner with the look of abject terror were one of the 5 couples)
i've given this some thought; while i subscribe to & still give lip service to the basic idea of social dancing & dancing with a lot of different people, i can now see that over the last few years i've been moving towards preferring to dance primarily with a single (equally proficient) partner for the evening while occasionally dancing with good friends of varied proficiency. i suppose that might be hard to understand for those of you who concentrate on one style of dance.

Danced HARD until 11:45 pm, managed to get home without falling asleep (too many times) on the 605, in bed by 1:00 am. Had a hard time sleeping because of the cramps in my feet that I couldn't stretch out. Kept me awake most of the night.
Dear CCC Cat:
"I have not gone out dancing much in the past few years because of my heart condition, but I want to build up my stamina to do more. I NEED to dance.
"I would like to meet the CA contingent of DF, but please be patient and kind. It's a little scary. Hard to understand for a young, healthy dancer, I'm sure."
"Building up" is the key to increasing stamina. A little bit everyday adds up. When I started dancing, I weighed almost 200 pounds. I was not in very good health, and I could feel it in my knees and in my heart. I'd get all out of breath and sweated up just doing the exercises in class, every mind the milonga afterwards! But little by little, day after day, week after week, the weight has slowly been coming off, and my cardiovascular health has improved. Maybe start by going to a milonga and doing must one of the slow, romantic tangos. Then rest for a while. Or just leave it at that for the first time. See you you feel. The next time, maybe you'll feel up to doing two slow tangos, if you rest a while in between. And of course, talk to your physician, and listen to his guidance. If you go someplace where you have friends, at least you'll have people you can talk to while you're not dancing.
And I'm not all that young -- as old as Jack Benny, I'm afraid -- and I know how you feel. When I'm in ballet class, and I watch all those young limber little girls, AUGH! I feel so fat, and stiff, and old. But then, sometimes during the center work, when we're doing a simple port de bras or adagio exercise (that I can actually DO), and I see myself in the mirror, I realize that none of that matters. I really have become a DANCER.
Yes, sometimes you've got to work twice or even five times as hard to reach your goal as somebody else. But trust me, the victory will be twice or five times as sweet.
If you have the desire to dance again, you will make it happen. Imagine if you had three magic genie wishes. Now, let me tell you a secret -- PASSION IS YOUR GENIE!!
Renee

Augh! I am so wasted this morning. I stayed at El Adoquin last night til 1:15, and they were still playing music, but I was starting to fall asleep sitting up. It took me over half an hour to get home, and while I didn't fall asleep while driving (for once), thanks to some coffee one of my friends forced into me, I simply could not keep my car in my own lane. I was all over the freeway. Fortunately, the 605 is big, straight, and pretty empty at 1:30 in the morning. But the time I brushed my teeth and hit the sack, I think it was 2:00 am or thereabouts.
But man!! I think I defended by doctoral dissertation in tango last night -- I danced with FOUR top level professionals, including a man who dances with Forever Tango, and a professional ballet dancer visiting from Marseilles. Talk about the doorway to paradise. I was ready to take that ballet dancer home and hide him in the closet to keep the INS from throwing him out of the country ("Oh, mommy, he's so cute, can I keep him?").
I gotta do ballet this afternoon, including the advance professional class, and Stefan is real tense and nervous lately because he's got three concerts coming up, including a premiere of a brand new ballet he choreographed. So, he gets extra tough when he's all nervous like this. I think I'm going to die.

Jury duty can be emotionally exhausting. I'm glad you're done. 8)
since the trial is now over, i can go into more of the details:
2nd degree murder, love triangle involving two felons, defendant (already guilty of parole violations prior to the shooting) apprehended in another state living with the woman in question, claiming victim had a banana in his pocket pretending it was a weapon so as to claim self-defense. even if we'd found him guilty on a lesser charge of manslaughter, it was the defendant's third felony conviction, so with the 3 strikes law here in california, he was going to go away for a long time as long as he was found guilty.

Yeah. The last I made it to a jury, the three strikes rule was involved, as well. According to the juror's guidelines, that shouldn't make any difference. Either you're convinced beyond a reasonable doubt or you're not.
But it sure is hard to even think about sending someone away for twenty-five years to life. Ugh!
I'm not surprised you needed some rest. I went home and wept, after we convicted the guy. I knew he did it, but voting for a conviction was very hard on me. :?

he admitted shooting the guy & the details of his account, combined with the fact that he initially denied even being there & other factors tended to detract from his credibility in general.

one of my fellow jurors was crying for the same reason as we left the courthouse. i tend to process these kind of things a lot more slowly, so i expect there to be an aftermath, so i'm making it a point to pamper myself for the rest of the week.
then i'm having another house party & going to stress over the details this weekend!

Romanian Law system doesn't imply jury... just a council (I'm sure it's another word for it, but...) of judges... like 3 or 5... and they make the final decision... no jurors...

The US system is a mix. In some cases, such as family court or traffic court, there's just a judge. In the criminal cases that make it that far, there's usually a "jury of your peers." It's an expensive system and I'm not sure it works as intended. The original intent was, I think, to make the process more fair to the accused and create the presumption of innocence. Not sure that always happens, especially in these days of omni-present media coverage ... :?

Nope, we're on a quarter system here so this is the end of their winter quarter, they have a week off, and classes for their spring quarter start up on March 28th.

as i tend to kick butt on standardized tests i naturally favor mulitple choice. the advantages are of course that they're easier to grade plus either you're right or you're wrong - although in one p chem class the test was multiple choice - but you had to choose the answer closest to the correct choice AND correct it to the proper answer. no partial credit. median was 10 (out of 100). THAT was brutal.
i do acknowledge that multiple choice tends to favor those with the best multiple choice test taking strategies as much as those who know the material. but as long as it's not timed there isn't much advantage
since the innate reasoning ability would only allow one to reach a conclusion more quickly given the known facts.

There's a flow to multiple choice standardized tests, too. If you can get with the flow, you win. If not? :x Some people do really well with those kinds of exams, some people fail them outright (maybe because they're intimidated?) and some people do not nearly as well as they should, because they second-guess themselves and overthink.
All in all, I prefer a good essay exam, but I do well on both. (because I'm an insanely hyper student. Only an A will do.  )

1:30 here- went out for ramen & beer after our gig! WHAT A BLAST! 50 people hanging out around a bonfire listening to live music! The band that went on before us was a Beatles copy band and we danced(twist, rockabilly) so hard we were breathless! It was pretty cold but we were sweating from all that dancing before we went on, so no one ended up getting frostbite! 8)
Haven't checked in here for a while... I've been sleeping most nights... but suddenly it's 3.45am and I'm wide awake. I'm sitting in a room alone enjoying the quietness and stillness, and thinking I'll try ballroom next term instead of salsa... I need something new, different...

Yeah. And I don't worry about the time spent doing laundry. I just toss a load in as I walk by the washer or dryer if there are dirty clothes around (on my way into or out of the garage.) The only time spent is that folding and putting away. I guess that's because I have the luxury of constant access to a washer and dryer for my personal use. :?

All is quiet on the DF front.
Who goes there?

1:28am here... time to go read for a bit and then get some sleep I think.
tsb, any guess where the pound will be at the end of May?
ah, you'd be asking for the exchange rate while you're at blackpool.
the USD has taken a beating since 9/11; since then we've gone from about $1.45 up to as high as $1.95. the overall trend is still up but i'd be surprised if GBP/USD was significantly more than $1.90 by memorial day as we're in a brief downtrend. but this is not a prediction - i wait for the big dogs to move, climb on & get off, so i have no vested interest in which way the market moves, only that it does.
still in that stupid channel, though it did hit reach a low of 1.8729 before shooting up to 1.8760 & back down to 1.8742 right now.
break, %$#@ it!

Don't you know it!
Still, the weakened $ has really hurt me the last couple fo times I've been traveling... :?

The yen is up to 107 to the dollar, jayzus! Hurts me when I convert to $ to send to the states. :?
actually, it's at 108.60, a 5.5 month low. there's a key barrier at 109, if that goes you could break 1.10 pretty easily. if the government can stabilize things you might drop back down to about 108.30, maybe even 107.70.
i got zapped by a rise in the pound back up to 1.874. but i should have anticipated the possibility given the channel it was doing.

If I send money back, there's a service charge so the rate I end up with presently is 107.

Yeah. I've had the same experience with exchange rates in a west african country I deal with, cocodrilo. The rate differs depending on the direction ... and the day or even hour.

Now, what are you children doing here at this hour?
This room is for people who cannot sleep.
Are you supposed to be sleeping now? Hmm?
And how is anyone going to sleep with all this talk of a mark, a yen a buck or a pound?
Ha! Especially since I just put that racous song in your head! HA! Raucous - Joel Grey would love it, no?

Hit the sack at 2:15 last night. Had a pretty good night dancing...to Grupo Fantasma...live band from Texas. :)
the pound dropped 150 pips (100 pips = $.01) earlier today & now in another tight channel between 1.87 & 1.8680... if i'm smart i'll set alerts for when the price breaks & take a nap...
& for cocodrilo, the yen has been channelling between 108.60 & 108.70. but that's to be expected since your market just closed a few hours ago. if they're reallly giving you a rate of only 107.6 you really don't want to know how much money they're making on the exchange...

And tsb, don't the forex bureaus always play around with the exchange rate? I've always thought that's how they make a profit. :?

for trading purposes, 1/100th of a cent is significant, & with leveraging is worth approx. $10 for every $1000. most trading houses charge a spread ranging from 3-10 pips depending on the currency pair, so they make $30-$100 per 1000 units of the base currency of the trading pair. with the numbers cocodrilo was telling me, she's getting charged a full cent in the exchange rate, they make approx. $1000 each time they exchange 1000 units of the base currency...
and the pound just shot back up $1.4 cents in the last 3 hours or so. anybody who caught thus HUGE move just made about a 75% return - in three hours. of course, people who shorted the dollar at the original rate are going to either take a loss or hold waiting for the rate to break back downward. but my take is that the pound is done for the day as the exchange closes for the weekend in about 4 hours.

Ah. In other words yes, that's how they make a profit. They're just making a heck of a lot more profit than I thought. Eh. :? Is there a way around that for someone who makes relatively small, infrequent exchanges? Or do you basically just have to pay the exhorbitant rates in exchange for the convenience? :x

at least in the US the only thing i can recommend is to exchange at banks as much as possible - but even they make $a$$, but the markup is usually much less than a full cent.

Oh, I am totally aware of how much yen they are making off my exchanges. It's called getting hosed. Happens every day here. If I want to have a bank draft a check, it costs $30. If I want to cash a check from abroad, it costs over $60. The yen is currently at 109. Sigh.
i see a close at 108.24-108.27 depending on whether you're selling or buying.
why am i still up? the market closed at 2:30pm PST!

Me, too! I actually took a whole day off from DF yesterday!
My name is Cha Cha and I'm a Dance Forumsaholic.
I had one day without it, but then, I had to get back to see what was going on.
I mean, will Temptress Too get married or not?
Will SDSalsaGuy work himself to death?
Will Genisius Redux ever come back?
Will the cleavage thread ever die? I miss one day, and I missed a crucial name change or something! I need to be in the know.
So let us take up our keyboards, and type!

I was cleaning bigtime today, getting ready for a big party here on the 3rd of next month. Crammed all my appointments into Sunday(tomorrow) so that will hurt, although I got all the troublesome tasks taken care of today! 8)

ahem, that means you're not an insomniac.
if you can get out there's a salsa/swing soiree hosted by the USC dance club at imperial tomorrow (saturday) night. it's free but they request semi-formal attire. starts around 8:30.
