I actually checked in at about 2:30 this morning, but decided to stay in lurk mode. 8) There were a bunch of folks logged on having a good conversation, so I figured they didn't need me. The most effective use of my time was attempting to go back to sleep. Which I did. :D

Yup. I think SD and dnice aren't actual insomniacs. They're weird hour keepers. They're up until 4 or 5 or 6, but don't log back in until after a good seven or eight hour sleep. Does that count as insomnia? I think not. 8)

Hmm, this has really got me thinking. Sure enough as long as one is getting 7-8 hours of sleep a day they should be fine, but I'm also thinking about something I learned when I was studying acupuncture.

I asked my teacher at the time why I felt so tired whenever I stayed up until 12-1 am and then slept in until 8 am or so. She had mentioned the energy in the body (chi) moves differently at different times of the day, which is something I also learned in MA study. So, at certain times certain organs are working harder and others are resting (or should be if we aren't putting an extra strain on them). She then told me that staying up too late was a strain on the body...and also that the hours of 10pm-12 am were when the body should be at its most restful state (ie sleeping)...and that anyone sleeping during these hours would gain twice the benefit of any hours slept after this time. It made sense as its really easy to go me to go to bed at 9 pm and then be up at 4 am and feel recharged...but staying up until 12 am then waking up at 8 still leaves me a bit bedraggled.

Hmm, but I imagine over time this must change, especially for those who work graveyard shifts. On that note, I was thinking today about the times that certain races of people have slept over the history of our world. Did people sleep the same hours 100,000 years ago? Especially before artificial lighting...did people go to sleep with the cycle of the sunlight and the coming darkness? What about during the middle ages? If anyone has a background in Anthropology I'd be very interested to hear your thoughts....and this would make for a pretty good research paper!

I wonder if some people can handle the odd hours better due to their ancestry or other factors? I can be either a morning person or a night person...but I still prefer to be an early riser. :)

Best,

SG

Jon,

I have a great idea...I know my membership in IRU club is a long distant dream, but how about if we can manage to be on at the same time? Ex: I am just getting up and you are just going to bed...I think that may work...I'll try and get up a bit early to see if you are around!

On a side note, I did go out dancing last Friday until 10:30 pm...and stayed up till about midnight! Is that pretty good or what? I'm still catching up on all the sleep I missed while on vacation...and if I stay up late, I rarely can sleep in to catch up...so its ERC for me I'm afraid.

SDsalsaguy

It was a very strange experience I must say. Perhaps among the most strange elements was to go to bed before my roommate (he's normally a 1:00am type guy) and not have had a couple of hours of time "alone" to myself before going to bed. It was also very strange to wake up the next day... the day just really shouldn't start that early!* The other strangeness of it was how truncated the day seemed – I mean I “lost” 3-5 hours from my usual “day.”

* I've said it before and I'll say it again, If G-d really wanted people to see sunrises, S/He'd have made them happen later in the day!

Since I was trying to take some time off from academia, etc., I wanted to get back to using my hands like I had when I was younger and did lots of carpentry, etc., so decided to go volunteer on a kibbutz. I never intended to be there quite so long, but ended up being out of the U.S. for 14 months…eight months on the kibbutz, three months backpacking through Europe and Egypt, and then three more months back on the kibbutz.

I started out mostly working in the vegetable fields like most of the volunteers but, once it became clear that I was going to be staying for an extended period they were willing to invest the time training me for one of the more intensive branches…which is how I ended up working in the date orchards where I spent eight of my 11 months on kibbutz. Pruning, pollinating, harvesting, etc.,…you name it, I did it. But, it almost never happened! You see, I’m not very fond of heights and, my first day trying to work in the orchards was at the start of the maintenance phase…which basically means that we drive from tree top to tree top in a cherry picker, where you then get dropped off as you climb out into the tree and, with a small machete, proceed to cut off the mildly toxic palm thorns… which can grow over six inches long!

Needless to say I was in a total cold sweat! Yet, by the end of the day, I told myself that I just had to try it and figure out if I was going to be able to do it or not. Well, that remains my least favorite task in the orchards… especially as it took over a month to complete the orchards in their entirety, but I did make it through, even if barely! What was interesting is that while I was never very comfortable in the cherry pickers – even after I was the one driving – I came to feel very comfortable when I was in the trees…

Anyway, llllllllllllooooooooooooooonnnnnnggggggggg story short, the kibbutz I was on was in the deep south in the Arava desert so most of the work done outdoors needed to get done earlier in the day before the sun got too high and too hot. So, we’d meet at the dining room for some tea/coffee at 4:30am, head down to work at 4:45am, and come back for breakfast around 8 or 9am. We’d then head back down to work until lunch at 12 or 1pm, when we’d usually call it a day (although once in a while another hour or two of work would need to get done). I’d usually catch a nap for 3-4 hours in the afternoon before waking up for dinner around 7pm, and then the volunteers would often stay up watching movies, having bonfires, playing backgammon, etc., until around 12:00am. Then it was off to get four more hours of sleep before starting it all over again…

Jon,

Wow, thanks for sharing...having never been to Europe (or anywhere else outside of the US) I have no idea what it would be like to immerse oneself in a foreign culture. And then 3 months backpacking around...as noted in my thread about routine and discipline...I'd likely go nuts in such a situation!

Ahh...you understood my little insult in Hebrew...I figured you would. And yes, it applies to me as well. Funny story on that...I used to work with a man from Israel who would just love to start swearing at us in his native tongue when he was in a joking mood, and we'd all just stare blankly as he said insults to us in a language we couldn't understand.

Having a gift for learning tongues...finally one day I decided to get even. So, knowing a friend of mines father was also from Israel, I ask him one night to teach me how to speak Hebrew. He proceeds to write down some pretty foul swear words (the one I used being the most mild)...and then gives me a few points on the accent and syllables. I look at him and say "hey, I'd really like to talk to this guy, not swear at him." I then learn these two gentlemen from Israel are old friends, and I'm told by my friend's father to "give him hell and my regards personally." How could I say no to that?

So eventually, one day the guy at work goes off at me in Hebrew with this same charming face. Out comes my list, and then comes the insults! The look on his face was priceless...of course he then proceeded to call me all sorts of things I know were REALLY bad...but he then complemented me on my accent and said I should consider studying the language. :)

Strange the things that aspire us to learn a little culture.

No problem SG. It's actually funny, but the lack of schedule is what I most like about traveling. I feel that when I get away from my daily routines I am much more open to what the universe has to offer...

As far as my own traveling, I first left the U.S. the summer after my freshman year in college when I spent a summer in Germany. I then visited Israel, briefly, over Winter break, during both my Junior and Senior years. As far as my backpacking adventure, I visited England, Sweden, Denmark, Holland, Belgium, Luxembourg, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Germany, Italy, and Greece, before heading to Egypt via Israel. (It was in Egypt that summer that I met John, my friend who's wedding I attended in Las Vegas last month.)

One thing I learned while I was traveling was that, as much as I loved going to new places and doing new things, what really appealed to me was meeting new people -- and especially seeing what were the things they thought about and did the same and what were the things they thought about and did differently. This was definitely a major factor in my ending up doing my graduate work in cultural anthropology (especially since I never had even a single class in anthropology as an undergrad!).

Ahh...you understood my little insult in Hebrew...I figured you would.
While I'm not fluent, I can manage to get by in Israel with resorting to English if I have to... :)

No no my friend, I've been over with the dark side for many years.

That's why I advocate being in both the ERC and the IRU club. I love getting up early, but I can be a night owl with the best of them...and put most to shame without trying. :P

However, I still don't have any coffee beans...and without those I don't have a shot at any of the ladies here.
On that note, I think I'm one of the few people I know that doesn't even drink coffee...last time I had a cup was more than 15 years ago.

I'll pass this along to DanceMentor though and see if he has anything to offer...

I have issues with DF too, but not the one that you're having. I don't ahve any issues with long posts.

Here's a solution:
Type out your response in a word processing program like word/wordperfect, notepad...and then you could log in, cut and paste, and you're all done!! :)
