Well....

it's almost 6 am here, I've been awake since 4 and I'm off work today so I could have slept in until 7:30..... I have to paint my house today, I could have really used the energy gained from a few more hours of restful sleep......

Sagitta
03-09-2007, 07:54 AM
What is the high if you are painting the house? Just a couple rooms, or what? I think that there is an eraly risers club...which is what you probably want. All IRU members probably fast asleep, stil. ;-)

I myself usually wake up at 5:30 and so I woke up early too..but just lazed in bed.

motardmom

Just 2 rooms today, and getting the appraisal done, sans carpet (which is a whole separate rant.... AAARGH!!!!!)

I didn't *want* to be a part of the early risers club today! I wanted to be a part of the hit-the-snooze-button-15-times-cause-I-don't-wanna-get-up club! LOL I'm still in bed, gotta love the laptop and a wireless connection....

Just found this thread - I could live here, at least from 2.30 to about 5 am. I think one can classify insomiacs as 'tired' or 'not-tired' ones. I fall into the latter catatory - fall to sleep at 10 and then up and sprightly until I get the second crash.

I don'tsuppose there are many of us here as the correspondence really drops, or should I say drops off...

I'm not an insomniac, I just work a night schedule, so on my days off I tend to stay to the same schedule. It keeps my biorhythms in a steady state.

I tend to lurk more than input though. I am not the master of the short, pithy post, so when I do post I tend to write novels.

Hope your insomnia is alleviated by D-F!

hi there bjp

If you have 740 posts and each is a novel you are out-performing Proust!

Hey, maybe I'm a pithy poster??

I too tend to write rather long things - I am cursed by touch typing - or rather everyone else is. I'm finding that there are less replies to my posts simply, I suspect, because no one can be bothered to read through them - can't complain, I have a hard time doing so myself.

So i guess I am a really not the pithy type, more the verbose or rather overly-analytical - or should I say overly-self-analytical and be both verbose, analytical and self analytical at the same time.

Now I'm sounding clever and that I am not.

Oh dear, better stop this one before I fall asleep. Wait a minute, now I am a cryptical poster!

Argh...

Hi there, I'm at home again. I'm not an insomiac I just don't sleep at night.
Am I the only person that can dance three hours and still not sleep? Funny thing is that I'm generally not tired. Well, not in the middle of the night at least.......

Perhaps I could get a job as a bank guard - or better an astronomer....... Tonights delight is reading all the threads with new postings on DF(sorry, not very enlightening today); checking the Dancesport Series to see if they have updated the dancers to the new regions (Canada is now one region; they havn't); looking through some photos (gee, some very beautiful dancers there - wish I was that young); some data analysis (yes, thats work related, have to pay for the lessons...) and the lovely tray of tea with a banana.

What do YOU do when the midnight hour calls?

I'm the same way as you. It was hard for me to sleep after a long social. You wouldn't think so, but I think that the socials gave me a burst of energy. Now I have my business to focus on, so when I can't sleep, I end up making things for that lol. It seems to relax me. So maybe find another hobby or something else to do that way? I know you just want to sleep, but seriously though... my hobby has helped me relax for some reason. I think that maybe when I just focus on one thing when I get home, then my mind isn't rushing into a million different directions, and I think this is part of the reason why, but I'm not sure. ;)

elisedance
05-27-2007, 03:43 AM
I'm one of those tiresome people that take up a hobby to relax - and then proceed to ruin that aspect of it by turning it into a non-paying ambitious new career! Thus, took up photography - next thing you know I am entering every competition I can etc etc. While this competetive streak does make me achieve things that surprises others it also means that I 'eat' hobbies, turning them into anything but :|

I'm not really shure what drives me to these excesses, I'm trying to not to destroy the pleasure of dancing while satisfying this craving to compete and achieve. The big decision now is whether to drop pro/am and focus solely on am/am - I think the latter is more dancing and less competition (its the way it works out when you have to pay for every lesson). we'll see...

Hi elisedance....I used to be a regular on this thread, unfortunately mod duties normally keep me so busy I don't get to post as much as I'd like. But anyway, I have similar tendencies about my "hobbies". I solved my dance dilema by having one style I devote myself to exceling in, and then having another style (or two) that I do just for fun (for me that's standard/smooth). It's a nice balance, I still learn alot in those lessons, I just don't push myself to practice as hard or as much as latin.

As for the pro/am and/or am/am - what a nice problem to have. They both have their merits and if I could swing both, that's what I'd be tempted to do.

Couldn't quite figure out what you meant by am/am being more dancing and less competition? Doing am is great because the comp fees are soooo much less then pro-am. Perhaps there are less comps or your am partner is less willing to compete?

elisedance
05-27-2007, 04:52 AM
Nah, nothing so complicated. With am/am you get to practise when you like so you take lessons and then practise/dance loads and loads. with pro/am you have to pay for every minute of everything so there is less practise time, more lessons and ultimately more competitions for less time on the floor.

I am truly lucky right now - but its been earned. I looked for a partner for over 6 years without any success. PM is a delight - excellent dancer, loves working on technique and has a great attitude both on and off the floor. By the way, he is ~6'3 and I am 5'10 so there is no missing us!

I'm going to take it slowly to see how things evolve. Pro and I have reached a point where dancing could really take off while PM and I are still at the relatively early stage - no competitions yet. thus, I don't want to commit to the latter until I am sure its the way to go - but I do think that that is the way its going. Besides, after dancing with PM for about a month I'm starting to crave this!

latingal
05-27-2007, 04:59 AM
Good for you elisedance, I'm happy for you. Pro-am is wonderful and there are many advantages for the am part of the partnership, but it is incredibly expensive (as you know!). And unless you are one of the lucky few that has the money tree planted in the backyard - there are just some dance experiences that are harder to acquire via pro-am. So hopefully you end up with the best of both worlds!

elisedance
05-27-2007, 05:25 AM
I think the discussions about which is harder or whatever (am vs pro/am) are a bit silly - anything can be hard/challenging etc if you take it far enough. The big difference for me is having someone solely on your side. this happens to some extent with a pro but both of you know that if hte money stopped so would the partnership so cash becomes a main driving force whether either of you like it or not. While you have to have some resources to compete at Am, this is not the limiting factor. You start to build up an 'its us against the world' sense that is, I suppose, really what we mean by a partnership. This is new for me and I like it a lot.

PS you mentioned you used to be a frequent poster here, so are you the person responsible for the 530 PAGES of this thread? huh??

Hi Elise, I used to stress about work, but got tired of making myself ill. Now my rule of thumb is that if I won't remember the particular stressor in 20 years, I'm not going to attach to it and worry about it now. It will all work out for the best and the way the universe wants it to, no matter how much I stress (or don't) about it. Now I just stress about my dance choreography and technique which is much more constructive! Tonight I practiced my new latin choreography in the grocery store after midnight! :uplaugh:

Usually I really enjoy these hours. I get a pot of tea (check) and a banana (check) and spread a feather comforter over our big black sofa and sit along it with my back on an arm rest (check). I pour a nice cup of tea and one or other of our big cats comes and sits on my keyboard or next to me (its Nick and he's next to me fortunately so I can still type).

But tonight it does not work so well due to the above mentioned stresses. Why do some leaders have to make an environment toxic even for the best empolyees? Anyhow, its not that bad, just an ocasional heavy.

Today (later) I have an evening practise with PM my AM partner - we should do at least 2 hours at a very nice studio. I also just got my AM membership number which is an up and we can now plan our first competition. So these are the postive things to look forward to!

Oh, dear, the other cat has just turned up and I am pretty sure there will be no room for the notebook!

DFP: I'm not sure if you went to bed - I hope so!

The other issue on my mind is whether to stop pro/am. We scoring well at Gold closed and competing finally in schollarship (though probably not really ready for that) and my coach is a terrific partner (well beyond the usual pro/am arrangements) too. However, with the new am/am partnership too both time and cost are becoming issues - I have just had to get a new (used) car and have payments again.

I am a bit leery since I had an am partner before for whom I stopped pro/am only to have him quit after a couple of months (from what I could tell, dancing was not the issue). Thus, once bitten and all that. Actually, the am/am partnership has a lot of positive prospects - and this guy is clearly in a different (positive) league from the other one. I suppose my inner, long term, :) mind is already made up - go for the am/am now while I have the chance. But my other  superficial mind wants to keep the immediate thrill and glamour of the pro/am comp. But, pocket book rules so we know where this is going!!

Still up :) I have an AM partner, but keep my Pro (less often now though because of $) to keep progressing with my learning - they dance at different levels. I also find that its easier to work on my issues with Pro to progress my dancing, before trying the new concepts on my Am partner. New things freak my Am partner out because it feels different. However, I understand pocket book issues. For me, I need to have a backup for my dancing in case my Am partner bails because I don't want to self destruct.

I'm really slowed up writing - afore mentioned cat is on lap and I am writing with a stylus...

I think that will be my compromise too: keep one privare, drop pro/am comps and focus on am. I totally understand about the protection against self destruction! It really is an adiction isn't it - of the best kind, that is

Anyone up? Its 1:40 am on Friday here and I have had three hours of lovely sleep. Now my notebook is a laptop, as is Nora my big black and white cat who is kneading me and making me wish I had not eaten that large italian meal last night!

Today is a big stress one for work (funding review for the next 5 years) but with some relief this evening I hope, 2 hours dancing with parther, one of the highlights of the week.

The cat just left, disgusted I think by my attention to the keyboard and not to her. Ah well, she was too early anyway, I have not got the pot of tea yet. for the formal patting session!

Hi there. If you danced your feet off how come you are not snuggly asleep? I assume you havn't been to bed yet - you have a difficulty falling asleep? Or are you on an odd schedule. I do the opposite, sleep for a few hours and then :bouncy: Later I will probably sleep again for an hour or two but thats it.

By the way, which time zone are you in? I'm east coast so its 2.15 am or so. I suppose if you are on the west coast its not so late yet.

I haven't been to bed yet, mostly because I have too much adrenaline pumping through my body, and I'm all achey, achey and my body is yelling at me right now. I do ballroom (all 4), ballet, AT & WCS and sometimes all in the same day. I'm slightly a dancing maniac. I do have a weird schedule in that I can work anytime I want, or sleep anytime I want, so I definetly lack structure for my life, except for my dancing which is my priority.

Well, you make my dance efforts rather humble! I too can make my own work schedule pretty much so its possible to fit it in where necessary. I don't think my body would take your pounding though. How amazing it must be to dance that much - its pretty euphoric a couple of hours at a time I'm sure you must reach the equivalent of a runner's high with the 'work' you do. I'm guessing you also work somewhere in the arts - that would allow you a lot of time freedom. I'm in a creative field but its not the arts - though I like to keep that stuff out of my (public) dance world (by all means PM if you like).

You didn't mention your time zone!

Funny how they call it 'finals week' and then a few weeks/months later you start all over again. It doesn't even stop after finishing college, finals week goes on and on and on - until you reach the real finals week and usually no one even tells you its happening.

Now what brought that on?

I'm late up again - but this time its not because of too much sleep. Went to a backyard dinner last night and, well, drank too much. I have the first hangover I've had for 20 years! The reason? Well, they served two very nice wines and I had several glasses - and then our host brought out a classic, a 97 Hugel Gevertztraminer. I could not resist....

So now I am an insomniac in the morning. Now what could be more lonely than that!

By the way, I only tried AT a few times - but absolutely loved it. It seemed to me the ultimate follow dance, you have to put yourself totally into a zen state to feel all the leads. Or maybe thats because I didn't get very far with it. I wish I had time to dance everything...

I've always had a hard time being completely "in the moment"--I always feel like I'm outside looking in at what's going on. Except in tango. I know the moment I go back to that b/c all of a sudden I can't follow for [samba]. Or the moment when i start thinking about what he's leading--I can't think, I've got to just be there, listen to the music, and feel what my partner is telling me.

Hi there meow,

The only rule for joining is posting - in that if you don't post we don't know you are there! Welcom to IRU! I'm something of a signature member but for the last three nights I've actually slept - I hope this isn't a disease or something :)

Thanks for the welcome. I will post, promise. Anyway, up at 5 am with nothing to do but stay quiet so I don't wake my son who gets up at 7 for work. Boring. So watched dance vid's. That's always good cos they are of my other son and he is away (in the US) at the moment. He has been away for short stints for comps before but this is the first time he has been gone for a few months - I am not pining, truly, but I do miss him. But it is great that he is experiencing other countries.

3:23...hmmmmmm......pre-comp issues?....hmmm

O I hate that - I usually dont' sleep the night before I fly and then throw a comp in to the mix and I just have an excuse to pack and re-pack everything all night long!

So It is 2:00 am on Monday and funny story is I just got bAck from dancing! With HS kids! It was fun.

Ah, back here at 3 am. All's right with the world!

Wonderful practise with partner from rather late last night. I thought that would buy me a decent nights sleep but, as usual (except for the last three nights!) its 5 hours and up. And I have to fly to England on the red-eye tonight and then get to a station and take a train to Manchester. At least the latter is first class so maybe the next real sleep will be on the Wed train?

Anyone else up now? I'm missing DFP!

I suppose you are moderating tonight. Does that mean you have to pre-read all the posts?? I have only noticed one of mine being affected- that one mentioned old women and pro-am in the same sentence and just disappeared when I hit return, never to be seen again (there must be this large trash bin in DF full of totally gross and slightly offensive posts....

Now and again I think about going back--for a grad degree in...something, or another bachelors (to be followed by a grad degree in something)--and then I think about school again. Don't get me wrong, I loved it, was a great student and all that jazz...but wild horses couldn't drag me back into a classroom or make me write a paper.

Edit to add: Although if wild horses could, somehow, force me to write a paper, those would be some damn interesting wild horses. Impressive, too. I'd wonder how they managed it... (Sorry, too much Good Omens lately...Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman thinking creeping in...)

Hi all!

I'm back from across the puddle and doin real IRU time. Now of course its jet lag as well (I slept well for about 4 hours). Also, I have cat patting duties to catch up on - everyone has a stake...

I do wonder to what extent coffee is the reason I am awake at night - on the other hand, someone I met last week said that he had heard - and it also worked for him - that if you drink red wine you tend to wake up in the night. I'm very fond of this and have a glass most nights - its supposed to be good for you in moderation. I'm going to try switching to white for a while and see what happens.

Ehhhh, we do tend to discuss preferences and opinions about dresses on DF, but I can't recall a particular thread. It usually just sort of "happens", unless someone specifically starts a thread asking for input or advice. Go for it - like "Hey, I've got a big butt / no boobs / short legs / hairy armpits -- do you think this dress (insert pic) would look OK on me?"

Unless you can try it on with a long mirror in front of you it is guess work. Something looks great on a hanger but awful on & vise versa. Also, even a picture of someone else with a similiar body shape could be iffy - skin and hair tones and colouring can make or break it.

hi all on daddy's day. Mine passed away a few years ago (happy event - good life and died in his bed at 93, so other than missing him, no sadness).

After missing a few IRU nights after my trip (due to that odd phenomenon, sleep), it seems my body is adapting back to its usual routine. The cats have missed me too and both are curled up on my lap - making typing an acrobatic feat. By the way, the 'small' one, Nick a tabby, is a lean 15 lb and is a genius amongst cats (OK, a little parental bias but he is amazingly smart). Nora, black and white and touching 24 lb (bit of a figure issue) is, well, shall we say has other lovely qualities!

Christmas dinner just isn't the same - you either have the traditional meal whilst moping up perspiration or have salads. Salads at xmas - trust me, it just isn't right.

I think I would like the idea of Father's Day in September. Grandparents' Day is also in September, so one could coordinate with a grandchild(ren) of one's father to get a joint Father's Day/Grandparents' Day gift, thus saving money for more dancing.

More money for dancing is always a good thing. But when did Grandfathers Day come about?

We've had it since 1973. The Hallmark Cards company was not responsible - honestly! ;)
