Hi, Elise. What I use most is the "Today's Posts (http://www.dance-forums.com/search.php?do=getdaily)" link. When you're logged on, you find it in the "Quick Links" menu. It shows me all the posts that have been made in the past 24 hours, regardless of forum, in order by recency, with the most recent on top. So, if you click it, say, every 10 minutes, any posts made during the previous 10 minutes appear at the top.
Thanx! Exactly what I was looking for (and didn't want to ask).
And probably what ED was looking for too!
Well, getting some sleep was not hugely successful. It is now 4.55 am and I've been up since 4.30am. So, in a couple of hours I got 'snippets' of sleep but not good deep sleep. Am I home alone?
Yeah, I have no idea about the "new posts" stuff, sorry!
Re: multiple quotes
Just embed (quote) multiple times:
(quote) Meow said stuff
(quote) tj said stuff
(/quote) (/quote)
Except you use the square bracket instead of the ( and )
Re: weather
Fall is finally here in Atlanta. Was still getting pretty hot up to a few weeks ago. Nights are chilly (finally). I must admit that I like how the winters aren't that cold compared to what I'm used to.
So are you enjoying the first hot day in a while? I hope so!
Anyway, I'm going to try to go to bed. Nite Meow & ED.
Hi TJ. I have to tell you that I am not a computer genius. I tried to follow your directions on multiple posts but it didn't work.
What do you mean by 'embed' and how do I do that? I know you must be wondering how anyone could be so dumb, but I truly don't know how to do it.:o
Would you please explain in more detail or perhaps, list what keys to use to do it? I would be very grateful for the assistance.:)

IJ: Thats exactly what I was thinking of. I'm usually pretty good at software but for some reason I have never really explored the whole of DF - too busy posting I guess. I was working with the subscribed threads link - but today's is much better since you see new interesting threads too. Gotta be a bit more adventurous.
thanks! :)

Meow:
To make a string of text look like a quote, you simply have to put a couple special strings of text at the beginning and end of the quote.
For example:
This is a quoteHere's how I did that:
This is a quote
If you want to attribute the quote, add "=username" to the first quote tag. For example:
This is a quote
Renders:
This is a quote
If you want to include a link to the quoted post, you have to include a semicolon and post number after the user name.
Thus the following string:
Hi TJ. I have to tell you that I am not a computer genius.
Renders:
Hi TJ. I have to tell you that I am not a computer genius.
If you have any skill at all with copying to and pasting from the Windows clipboard (if you're a Windows user ... if not, refer the equivalent operation with your operating system), all this become pretty easy. Just remember that you if you begin a quote with (or any of its variants above), you must end the quote with or everything else in your message will be part of the quote!
Does this help?

Are there any insomniacs from the US on? I can't really be classified as an insomniac because it's only 7:48 pm here..

Well, some people are morning people and others aren't. It's just a matter of what you're accustomed to, I guess. Really, it's no big deal, as long you I get enough sleep.

Yes, but I thought that some moderators had the power to move messages from one forum to another. If so, it would be an easy matter for a mod to establish a new "Tips on Using DF" thread in the appropriate forum and move to that new thread any appropriate messages.

Well, if the subject/question is important enough to all of you, go ahead and start a new thread about it. Lol. I don't want the responsibility to have to split off threads every time someone goes off topic in IRU.

Elise, my understanding of what the moderators are saying is that if you think a "Tips on Using DF" thread is a good idea, you should start one. Then, people who want to can copy their tips from existing threads (like this one) into your new thread. Of course, the result will be some double-posting, but maybe that's not a big concern.
I don't know what forum would be most appropriate for your new thread. I suppose it should go in either General Dance Discussion or Dancers Anonymous. I've seen moderators move threads to forums they find more appropriate, so I suppose it doesn't matter. If they don't like where you put it, they'll probably move it!

Intelligent felines aside...
It's 1:37am. I am, of course, awake. Have been sleeping so much lately. Too much. I feel restless and comatose at the same time. Does that make sense? It's worse now that I've got a free week (some call it reading week, we call it half-term). I feel like crap all the time, like I want to sit in a couch all day and watch DVDs... and at the same time I DON'T. I can hear the voices of my acquaintances telling me that I'm in London, Europe's Broadway, city of arts and all around awesomeness, apparently. It makes me feel guilty for not feeling like exploring it.
And now that I mentioned awesomeness... coolest word ever: juxtaposition. I had to Google it to get a descriptive definition, but even if it meant "egg yolk" it would still be a cool word.

Many people find they need less sleep when they get older. What mine has done is settled into a two-sleep pattern - 10-2 am and 5.30 to 7 - about 5.5 hrs but varying quite a lot. I have to have the second sleep to function.
This may be true for everyone (at least older than 15 or so) because these two periods are when you have the deepest sleep, the bit between is often just below the surface

You know, the 5:30-7:00 bit makes a lot of sense. I've always wondered why it is that when I call in (usually "sick") to work and go back to bed, that I sleep so unbelievably soundly...which, for me, is extremely unusual. I always just figured it had to do with the joy of not going in to work.
That also would seem like it could explain why I sleep so well on the train in the morning. Doesn't make sense otherwise--sitting upright in godawful uncomfortable seats, bright lights, lots of noise. And, yet, I sleep sooooo well. Part of it is habit, I'm sure, and a good part of it is pure fatigue. But it's also from about 5:45 to 6:55 in the morning.

you must be heckishly more active than I am (I am sure thats true by the way - my job is mostly desk-top). Still, I don't find that I sleep all that much better after 4 hours straight dancing so its not true for me on the short term at least.

It may have but then, due to low ratings, could have been pulled. I guess that 'the poo' has a flavourful history in his hometown, some good, some bad, same as all of us. It's just that his gets publicity which is usually less than flattering.
Now, I saw a news report about Wikipedia not so long ago - this report said that anyone can edit and change any article they want. It went on to say that Wikipedia was, therefore not always a reliable source of info as it can be altered by anyone at any time. Don't know if this is true or not. Maybe something that is something you could check,TC? That may be why I never even realised 'Age of Love' was on air, if it was?;)

When it is the middle of the night here and I am awake, which is most of the time, I don't get on the internet. I just can't be bothered. And, my IRU time is not the US IRU time, so I have found not many people to talk to then.

OK. I will talk (or purr) to myself. The IRU thread wasn't on the bottom of the page - it had actually disappeared to page 2!!! How could this be allowed to happen? What will we insomniacs do if the thread disappears into no man's land? Makes no difference whether kittens are here or not? Most of the time lately is pain keeping me awake. Only so many pills you can take.
And the more I do physically, the more pain later. That doesn't stop me from doing things though.

hi there - 4.45 here but I've been lucky and slept a few. Just heard the familiar crash of the Globe And Mail hitting the front door. One of these days he is going to knock it down...
Back again. Sorry, ETP, but it is very hard to be logical when sleep deprived. I seem to confuse myself sometimes.
You know, a couple of weeks ago we began daylight saving time. I am so confused now about the time differentials - I shouldn't be as it is only 1 hours difference but I am. I don't seem to know which way is up these days.
BTW, still talking to myself.
etp777
11-10-2007, 02:06 AM
Heh, yeah, really was not happy that daylight savings stime started almost immediately after I got here to kuwait. Made it even harder to nail down the difference in time between here and home. Finally got it figured out though.
You are good. I haven't gone anywhere and I'm still confused. So, how is Kuwait? Are you glad you went there?
etp777
11-10-2007, 02:12 AM
Now that I found out it's actually civilized here (aka there are opportunities to dance, even if I can't take advantage of any of them yet), I feel a lot better about bein ghere. :)
But yeah, everyone I work with is good, the housing is decent, several restaurants within walking distance, which is nice since I can't drive yet. Overall, beyond the long days and horrible hours (up at 3 to catch ride at 4 and get in to office at 5, then 12 hour shift and reverse the process), it's not bad. Am definitely happy I took the job so far, think I would have regretted passing up the opportuinity.
That's good. It takes courage to go to a foreign place without knowing what to expect. Me, I don't know whether I would have done it - cats are fairly chicken sometimes (that's why we like to eat chicken).
etp777
11-10-2007, 02:23 AM
mmmm, chicken. Was actually just hoping that there's some chicken at dfac(dining facility, one of the new terms I had to learn here) for lunch today
Yeah, there are a whole lot of good reasons I had in my head not to do this, jsut barely weighed out in favor of doing it, one of main things that made it possible to me is that I already knew someone here. Pretty much everyone was either so-so about it, or actually outright against me going, which of course made me lean against it. Two people really pushed me though, my pro and my youngest sister. Their push, plus knowing someone here, finaly pushed me to take the job (along with all the positives of course, seeing new country, fixing a soft spot in my resume with some experience I needed tech wise, getting out of debt, etc). Oh, and of course the most important reason, that combination of gettin gout of debt ($1100/mo in bills I'll no longer be payign on when I get out of debt), and fact that network expereince and security clearance should let me find a higher paying job, add up to twice as many dance lessons, 5 times as many coachings (2 in 11 months vs going to at least once a month), and a lot more comps (1 a year to at least 5). Dancing is always the most important part. :)

Yeah, being out of debt is great. I know as I don't have any debt. And getting a high security clearance can only be a good thing when looking for better jobs. As well as having gone to a semi-dangerous place. Loads of good reasons but still gutsy. I take my cathat off to you.
I might go for now. Might catch up tomorrow.. Have a good day or night, which ever it is over there.

And it's 12:44am. Does this qualify as IRU time? Can't remember. I'm facing the age-old dilemma: do I sleep or do I study? If I sleep I will not study. If I study I will not sleep. It's not going to be pretty tomorrow one way or another.
Will try to study (write the damn labs). Head hurts. Want to sleep badly. Remind me how I managed to procrastinate this homework AGAIN...

Did I mention the threatening pile of laundry in my full laundry basket? That too.
I am such a horrible person for procrastinating so long and so badly!

maybe set the alarm and sleep for a while? question is whether you can function well on no sleep - if not its best to at least get a few hours up front....

I need at the very least 5-6 hours to function adequately. Have done less, but I'm mentally and emotionally tired these days, which would make it nigh impossible to get out of bed with less than 5h.

If I sleep I will not study. If I study I will not sleep.
Just walk beside me, and . . . oh, never mind.

...cult reference?
The cult of cheesy Hallmark greetings:
"If you lead me, I will not follow. If you follow, I will not lead. Just walk beside me and be my friend."

Had to Google Hallmark. I swear, Google is better than buttered toast.

Have you tried Dogpile? It gives you the results found on all the search engines.

Why, god? Why?
Why am I awake? I'm exhausted, but my brain won't stop...but it's not even thinking about anything useful. Why have I been awake since 3am? Why have I been awake, on and off, all night long?
This is one sick, cruel joke.

I think I'm alone in the universe of sleeplessness. Tonight has been a doozy - sleep at 10 pm then up at 1. And still here, tapping away writing annoying answers to nonsensical threads. Ah well, its a living.
Not even Meow is around, - she's been a bit quiet of late, no meowing and no purring - hope the kittens are behaving themselves..... Peaches must have got some sleep finally. Sweet dreams you. Sweet dreams all. Even my cats have given up and gone to sleep - hey, you're supposed to be the nocturnal ones.....
But you are still in spring - so why are the trees 'deciduating'? Gee, never will understand your upside down country! :p
Do you think being upside down (the country, that is) could explain why I am a cat? And a slightly nutty cat, at that?
Don't ask me why the trees are losing their leaves at the wrong time of year. I can hardly tell what season we are in - looking around and the weather reports - hey, it could be any time of the year.

You have to get your sleep TE - I guess its half the problem. If you are rundown due to lack of sleep then everything else becomes bigger....
Maybe get a large teddy bear?? Not kidding, it works....

I'm sleeping too much, actually. Slept 14 hours this Wednesday (though I did have a bad headache that night).
My big teddy is back hooooome! Wouldn't fit in my suitcase when I first came here, will probably take it with me now. Look:

Naaaah. Going home in a month (with my huge suitcase, no less). My only concern is that, during my packing and storing in the summer, it will take up lots of space. Eh. We'll see.
Plus, I've sort of outgrown teddies. This one was just too cute.

Hi ED. It has been extremely hectic. Hope I don't jinx myself - the kittens are OK, they have just have kept me really busy. And I cannot get to my computer in the middle of the night - that is a real problem.
So, how are you keeping? And how is the family of cats and Flippy?
Since I am a cat and cats are nocturnal, does that mean I'm not an insomniac? :o If it does, I will have to turn into a human so I don't get turfed out of IRUland.;)

well, it means that you can legitimately post here in the middle of your day - though I dare say the gods will have an opinion on that.... !
Hi all. Well, I finally got to my computer and it is the middle of the night here. 1.15 am. Cannot sleep. It is rather too warm with no breeze - YUK. Also in some pain. Took meds and waiting for them to hopefully kick in. Maybe will get some sleep then.
I'm pretty sure I am legal being in IRUland during the middle of the day if I am talking to someone else who is in the middle of their night.
It has been 8 minutes since I posted - where is everyone? You are allowed in IRU to talk to me even if it is the middle of your day. I'm waiting..........
OK. After an hour of 'slunking' around - too tired to 'slink' - I am going to try to get some sleep. Catch ya, later.
What is going on? Where are you all? Have you become traitors to IRU and found a way to sleep? Share.

most of us are trying to sleep i suspect. I am on the couch, under my couch-duvet with a cat, Nick, straddled accross my lap and the laptop just beyond him. Not the easiest way to type but very comforting somehow.
still up?
No, sorry but I got bored being alone so got offline. I was up that whole night though.

a bit woozy. I should still be asleep - and tomorrow (today) I have a big day. Hour practice with DP, lunch with same, then a first try at a group lesson after which we will get to practice at a large studio. Thats followed by a dinner party for a 50th birthday. All go! somewhere in there I have to clean up some more leaves before the snow comes...
I have had a really lazy day. Did the usuals (as in housework) that gets done everyday but then just read a book and sat on DF. Kitten having 4 hours of lessons today.
Go to 'photo of the day'. I put up this really cute pic. And it isn't me.

I went back and it is there; looks OK to me. But in case it isn't working for others I have uploaded it again in a different way.

Greetings to all inhabitants of IRU land! As you people are obviously the ones to come to about sleeping disorders, i've got a query for you.
Does anyone know anything about sleep walking? I do it quite a bit and almost always wake up with fresh bruises. I would think that hurting myself would wake me up but it doesn't. Anyone have any suggies for how to stop it? Apart from chaining myself to the bed..
Thanks, MBB.

Hi MissBB!
I was a sleepwalker as a child - but grew out of it before high school.
(Worst shocker was when I woke up and found myself in a closet!)
Do you get enough regularly-scheduled sleep?
Or do you instead not get enough sleep, or on an irregular schedule?
Supposedly, enough regularly-scheduled sleep will alleviate sleepwalking.
