Ooooooooops!

I planned to take it easy with salsa tonight... still recovering from Monday's accident and all.

Well, ended up dancing for over 4 hours sitting out only 10-15 songs all night (the merngues of course! )... hope I don't feel it too much in the morning!

Silly Dr. told me I could start light neck exercises tomorrow... somehow I don't think she was used to salsaholics!

SD,

Glad to hear that you are back into the Salsa groove. Yep, when I got in my car accident and then talked my doctor, I asked about dancing, to which he replied:

"I'm sorry, but you shouldn't be dancing for a week at least."

The look I gave him was priceless!

"Excuse me? No dancing?"

And of course, I went anyway...but I was in way too much pain and it didn't go that well...but after a few days I was back dancing again...but it was a while before I even thought about doing any spins...

Yup - I sit out those Merengues too...they play WAY too many where I go dancing. Tonight there was two in a row for like 15 min straight...after that I knew it was time to go home.

Especially since I had already got my Salsa fix! :D

Heh heh heh. No worries SD, we'll find a way to visit Austraila and have a DF reunion party with all the Salsa folks from down under. I have a feeling it'll be a while, but this is good for me as right now my Salsa skills are just starting to develop. :P

So...in another year or so I will be a lot better, and then we'll have a jolly good time! We'll also be able to save up the $$$ too...hmm...in my case a year may not be enough though... :?

Can't you get some grant money for your research...I mean part of your project MUST include the views of people in Austraila...er....as we all know Salsachinita is quite into the DanceSport thing...right SC??!?! *nudge* *wink*

Okey dokey, I started to post this last night but was so wiped out from yesterday that I just crashed. So, here it is...

Ok, wow, what a day…

So, soon after my last post here this morning I started getting ready. I think half of my stress went out the window at that moment. As soon as I was actually *doing* something, it was better (or, perhaps, it really wasn’t but, because I was otherwise occupied, I didn’t notice!). The nerves went down another notch once we got over to the gym as well… it’s a comp that we’ve been at before and we know lots of the people involved, so that familiarity also helps.

Anyhow, we’d originally signed up just to do Championship Rhythm in the ballroom divisions, but there was no one else entered in it, and we wanted to get *some* competition in, so we went over early to add some open gold rhythm one dance events which had other couples entered: Cha, Rumba, and Swing (ECS). Unfortunately the other couples (2) entered in Cha & Rumba scratched, so we ended up soloing those, but we had three other couples in Swing.

I almost got pulled over at the start of our cha cha but, as soon as that was out of the way, we just had a blast. Unfortunately the event was running way behind schedule though, so, to make up time, the music was cut *very* short when we were the only ones on the floor… literally only 30 seconds! :( Well, needless to say we “won” cha cha & rumba! We also won swing. Later in the afternoon the guy who came in second told me that it had been 3 marks to 2 (5 judge panel). On the way out that night Janelle and I stopped to take a look at those marks and we got the 1st from the judge(s) we’d most wanted, so that was nice too. Anyway, on with the day…

After getting those awards the next events were the “Open” dances (i.e. Merengue, WCS, Hustle, AT, Lindy Hop, and Salsa). Janelle and I had signed up to do Merengue, Hustle, ad Salsa – just to social dance them for the fun of it. I was also signed up with Lindy to do WCS, but she was worried about costume changes, etc., so asked me if I minded if we didn’t do it… so I just asked Janelle if she wanted to throw that one into the mix as well. I do have to say that the music selections for salsa sucked. Really slow and punctuated…closer to ballroom mambo then a nice, smooth, sexy salsa. Oh well, what can you do, right? Anyway, we ended up doing well, placing 3rd in WCS & Hustle and 2nd in Salsa & Merengue. On a further nice note, one audience member who’s opinion on dancing I trust a lot said that we should’ve won salsa. Personally I don’t care, since I really am not about competition regarding salsa, but it was still a nice comment to hear none the less! :)

Well, with that set of awards out of the way we still had Championship Rhythm to go… still trying to make up time we were put on the floor with the final of the Pre-novice Rhythm. The nice part of that was that with more couples on the floor we actually got most of the way through our cha and rumba routines. For swing, bolero, and mambo, however, the music was, again, cut really short… about 30 seconds playtime! :x That was a bit frustrating/annoying since we never got to our “tricks” in either bolero or mambo, let alone the second half of either routine.

After watching the formation and team matches, and the show, we went out to get a bite with several other team alums and friends, and called it a night. While we may both have been taking cold medication yesterday we had a lot of spectator support, both on and off the floor, and had a blast.

[A couple of shots, courtesy of Profirio, are here (http://www.dance-forums.com/album/showphoto.php?photo=330), here (http://www.dance-forums.com/album/showphoto.php?photo=329&password=&sort=1&size=medium&cat=2&page=), and here (http://www.dance-forums.com/album/showphoto.php?photo=328&password=&sort=1&size=medium&cat=2&page=)... thanks Porfirio!]

 Well, my hair isn't actually shorter, but I use a couple of packages of hair elastics to make a tight pony tail and then compress it into a small ball at the top of my kneck. Not my personal style, but certainly a cleaner look for the comp floor. The lack of facial hair does, of course, make a difference too...

But, aside from these two items, I'm also down 20-30 pounds from any other photos of me here (hmmm, except the one with Celine, in the Salsa Album, but that one's mostly just a head shot anyway) and I'm *much* more tanned in these shots... go Mystic Tan! :D

What's Mystic Tan  I know that it is *cough* artificial tan but is it better than the others? Why?

Yes, better! Much better!

Mystic tan is actually not a self application thing but, rather, you go in a booth and get sprayed down with the tanning agent... the whole process, from arival to departure, takes 15 minutes, and you don't have to worry about blending, or eveness, etc.

I'd never done it before, so thought I'd give it a try. I'd definately do it again though!

Pretty much!

Hit the button, 14 seconds of spray, 10 seconds off while you turn around, 14 more seconds of spray, hang out in the mist a tiny bit, and get out... presto-tano!

It fades off fairly naturally... but I'll have to wait to tell you how long it takes...

Actually, Mystic Tans come in different strengths, from 1 to 3, and suposedly work best with a second one a few days after a first... Janelle and I both went with a level 2 on Wednesday night but then decided to try going up to a number 3 on Friday night...

Your not supposed to shower for 4 hours or so afterwards, which made me figure that working up a good sweat doing salsa probably wouldn't be the best idea either... hence my foregoing of my ussual Friday night salsa fix.

double edged sword - having experience with the same issues makes it easier to have empathy - but having unresolved issues (which is not uncommon for counselors & actually a reason a lot of people are counselors - i think all therapists/counselors should go through their own extensive therapy before they practice) are like wearing glasses with different colored lenses. it's hard to help someone else figure out the color of the glass in their window panes if they're projecting their own colors onto that other person.

i think myers-briggs can be helpful to being about awareness of one's tendencies. as they are only tendencies and not set in stone one can make choices to overcome the tendencies that are counterproductive to one's goals. as an entj, i had to work pretty hard on control issues. nowadays a lot of people describe me as easygoing and tell me i come across as a people person - which is not how you describe a typical entj!

apparently not this time. he's a pretty private & apparently he's been observing me for the last 3 years & decided that i walk the talk. pretty gratifying to hear someone tell you that.

Yes. I was just being silly. It is very nice when someone trusts you enough to share their innermost thoughts. It can be difficult, sometimes, because I tend to identify with others. But it's gratifying, all right, especially if you can help them see their way through a dark spot. That's joy.

I do a lot of the counseling, just not professionally. I work with at risk kids, and do a few other things to help me satisfy that side of my soul.

If I remember correctly, I ended up being an ENTJ, as well, although we spent much time debating whether I was an E or and I. We finally settled on E -- supposedly good at people-interactive careers, like teaching, public relations, sales, counseling, the ministry, etc.

Hmm. How the heck did I end up in engineering? And pretty good at it, too. *shrug* who will ever know.

the way it was explained to me, extrovert/introvert wasn't as much your social tendencies as much as what you chose to do to re-energize your self. a lot of extroverts spend a lot of time alone - and a lot people who are very social, even to the point of being considered the life of the party can actually be introverts.

7.11pm, nowhere near bed time! I am tired but content from a great dose of salsa fix yesterday :D .

I must have danced nearly 12 hours straight! starting from 1-3.30pm (workshop with L & J Vasquez) then kept on dancing at our usual spots, before we really hit it off (with my dance partner "el Washing Machine") at my fav Salsa/Latin jazz venue (the best salsa orchestra is back on for the next two monthes 8) ). We drew a crowd as usual.....the enegy of that place is just amazing!

according to an article i read, the odds are about 3 to 1 that you're an extrovert. supposedly a lot of actors are introverts. but another thing to remember is that introversion & extroversion are measured on a sliding scale so one can be mildly or extremely so in either direction.

SG & salsachinita... thanks for your interest. The trip was fine. I got to check out a big salsa club in Mexico City on Saturday night which proved very interesting. Aside from that, let me just say that I appreciate your interest.

OK guys, sorry for being so cryptic and I *do* appreciate the interest. If you (or anyone else) are interested, I'll be happy to PM you about the whole thing.

Thanks again,

Showed a neighbour of my cousin's the latin dances of cha cha, salsa, merengue, jive, and bachata. (The neighbour definitely is related to me as she is to my cousin, but don't ask me how. Almost every second Goan seems to be!! Frightening!!!!) Then I finally got my youngest cousin in that household to dance merengue with me!! :D A good day/evening. I'm still glowing all over! tonight went to a quinceniera (think latino bat mitzvah except at 15) a friend threw for his daughter. one dance made the whole evening of dj'd american top 40 worthwhile - with the dj's 24 year old daughter no less...

LOL. You sound like my friend Willie. He spent seven years redesigning his front yard. I'm not sure what the desired effect was, because after multiple trips to the county planning board, tons of licenses, and piles of money paid to contractors, he got a new job and had to relocate across the country. The poor guy had to kill the project to make his house sellable.

Hmm. He's a Stanford guy, too. I wonder if it's something in the water there. :D

Hey now, I'm here! I just got back from dancing and then watching Jersey Girl...quite a good movie considering the directors past flicks...the whole theatre was actually quiet and many people were crying! That's pretty rare for a Kevin Smith movie. :)

Hmmm, I also had my first West Coast Swing lesson...I must say...nice dance but...I'm a SALSERO...I know that for sure now! Too high up and bouncy for me...:P

It was kind of fun going to this old venue...they remembered me as this shy guy that never asked anyone to dance...little did they know all the time I've been spending in Salsa clubs! I didn't say a word about it, stayed for an hour or so and they didn't play one Salsa...and then it was time to go.

Apologies Vince...I'll give WCS another go sometime in the future...but for now, lady Salsa has my heart...and her younger sisters...cha-cha-cha, Bachata and even Merengue! :D :P

03-27-2004, 07:17 AM
Sorry, SG, but I don't think WCS should be high up or bouncy. It's pretty typical to start out there, but most good Westies are very grounded and sensual. No bounce. Try it again. It grows on you. 8)

Sorry, SG, but I don't think WCS should be high up or bouncy.

Does this mean (potentially) that SG was not bending his knees enough  :D

danceguy
03-27-2004, 11:25 AM
Well who knows...believe me I've spent a lot of time watching WCS as its the main dance that people do around here...and some of the folks are very good at it. Its fun to watch...but just like Lindy...I think its a cool dance, but I just don't like the way it moves and flows. :?

Compared to the way I dance Salsa, it is high up...but I bend my knees a lot...since my legs are developed that way from years of Tai Chi practice.

And honestly...another reason is that I rarely see anyone my age dancing it...mostly 40+ folks. Regardless, give me a few more months to work on my Salsa and I may give it another go. ;)

Sagitta
03-27-2004, 12:34 PM
Yup...WCS is definitely not a bouncy dance...jump swing, ECS, jive...those you can call bouncy.

It's true about most of WCS dancers being of the older crowd. What sort of dance music was played at that old venue you attended to SG?

It's true about most of WCS dancers being of the older crowd.

i think you have to reach a certain age - partly because it takes that long to become good at it, but mainly, for want of a better way to describe it, you need to reach a certain level of life to appreciate the nuances - much in the same way you don't have a lot of good young blues musicians... young studs tend to think it's about how many notes you can get out whereas a real blues musician can do a slow bend on a whole note and make it say volumes emotionally.
