Are you that young?
Yep, I'm 29! And you? :D :) :o :) :D :P   :P :D
 A lady/woman over the age of 18 never tells
As a friend said to me last night, a woman hits 21 the moment she turns 17, remains 21 until her 21st birthday and then remains 21 for the rest of her life, whether people believe her or not

I have to run now or be late. So why are you folks pulling me into conversation? Hmm?
This forum seems to me very age obsessed, from time to time. I've found age to be irrelevant, since I passed my twenty-first birthday. Now that I'm legal, so to speak, who cares how old I am? Not I.
This conversation reminds me of a friend of my family who was youth obsessed. For years, she'd go around telling people that 35 years old was "middle age," and that people even as little as a year or two older than she were "old." I wonder what she's doing now that she's 54 years old? Somehow, I don't think 35 seems so old to her anymore.
Incidentally, I was raised in a family where it's considered to be extremely impolite to ask someone's age, male or female, particularly if that person is your "elder." It just wasn't done. My parents weren't told, as children, how old their own parents were. It was considered none of their business. No one lied about their age, either. It just wasn't considered a topic of polite conversation.
Good thing I've loosened up considerably from the way my parents raised me. LOL.

 This reminds me of a lovely story I heard. This woman was telling everyone that she was "39". For years she was "39" even though her hair was silvery. One day, her daughter came to her and said: "Mum, what am I going to do when I turn 39!"
(The daughter was becoming concerned that it was impossible for them both to be "39")
Without batting an eyelash, the mother said: "Darling, that is YOUR problem! I am staying "39"!"
:D I always laugh when I think about it. From what I have heard of this lady, she was a bit of a livewire

I don't get this thing with people's age...I used to ask all the time when I was a kid. I think the funniest moment was when I was 20 and taking Karate and I was asked to work with a small group of kids. One asked how old I was (and at the time I was sporting a long ponytail and a foot long beard), so I told them to guess.
I was surprised at their responses, 30, 40, 50, and one little twit said "135!"...man I so had to hold myself back from making him do some extra pushups!

I think it's cultural or family upbringing. I talked with my Mom about this thread today. Needless to say, she was shocked to find a group of people this large, freely exchanging age inquiries and replies. Just not done, in her book. *shrug*
I'm going to google the etiquette of discussing people's age. Or maybe I'll ask jeeves. Those searches are much more intuitive. (Tomorrow LOL) I'd be willing to bet that, if it's documented, it's a big no-no. Of course, things are changing quite a bit.
salsachinita
03-29-2004, 09:19 PM
It must be a culture thing. Traditionally (now with the Western influnence, who knows) Asians have no problems discussing age. Aging is considered a good thing. People get more respect from others as they age. Some actually ADD one year to their real age because they start counting from conception  (ok, not exactly a year, but they add a year anyway).
I personally LOVE getting older every year.......your understanding of self & the world just gets that little bit more  ..........if there is a chance to go back into being a 19 or 20 year-old, I'd turn it down. I am so much happier now (and it seems to get better)!
pygmalion
03-29-2004, 09:36 PM
Good point, SC. I was thinking American-centered age-related etiquette. If I have time, I'll drop by the library tomorrow and look it up in one of those huge etiquette books. Either that, or I'll google.
And you're right about the implications of a culture's view of age, I think. In some cultures, increasing age means an increasing level of respect. In others' unfortunately, the opposite is true.
pygmalion
03-29-2004, 09:46 PM
Oh yeah, and one more comment before I go to sleep. The age thing is not entirely about old age versus youth. At least the way I was raised, the only context in which it's appropriate to ask someone's age is if you're speaking to a very young child. Then it's okay to ask. Other than that, people are free to offer information about their age, if they wish. But it is very impolite to ask.
I know my parents are old and old fashioned, but I don't think their world view is all that unique. Rules of etiquette have relaxed a lot, especially recently, but I bet there's still something documented about this one. And of course, I'll make an effort to find references.

I can understand the ettiqutte about age Pygmalion...I was raised in household with similiar views. A youngster was never supposed to ask the age of an adult.
Of course, I never allowed this to stop me. In kindergarten I pestered one of my teachers for weeks on end until she finally told me her age. I never understood why people held onto this like buried treasure! :?
I do realize that age discrimination is one reason to be wary of (been a victim of this one a lot) in the workplace and such...but I've always felt that some people just get way too uptight about things in life.
I ask a lot of questions...sometimes I get answers, sometimes I don't. But I will always ask...and despite my shyness, most people are surprised that I will talk about just about anything...save certain things about myself that I only withold to protect others, as we all do. ;)

I looked this up today. In Emily Post, Letitia Baldridge, Miss Manners, the Complete Idiots' Guide, ... you name it. There was not a single reference to the "inappropriateness" of asking about age. Not one.
However, every single reference book talked about how to deflect what Miss Manners called "nosiness about one's age." Hmm.
So, I guess the bottom line is, you can ask whatever you want, but be aware that receivers may see you as nosy. And they're out reading books to learn how to deflect your unwanted questions. LOL.

To fix a broken printer, do the following:
1. Identify it is a laser or bubble jet
2. Determine model - ie Canon, HP, Lexmark, Epson, etc
3. If you have an HP inkjet, you have my condolences
4. If you've ever heard of a Lexmark, you're a computer geek
5. Determine the exact nature of the problem: paper jam, bad print quality, I/O error, bad cable, user errror, etc
6. If you cannot solve the problem by normal means...obtain ScorpionGuy's magic fix it tool: a 20 pound sledgehammer
7. Place printer on a thick wooden stump (oak or redwood would be best)
8. Make sure you are outside and that your neighboors are watching

SD, we need to organize that trip to down under real soon! :car:
I went out dancing last night and had an ok time, but there was WAY more men than women and it made the dancing environment kind of funky. Luckily, one of my favorite ladies to dance with was there so I had some great dances with her...otherwise it would have been a horrible night! Finally a few more women showed up...but twice as many guys too...and mostly people were at the bar and not on the dance floor...more interested in socializing than dancing.
Oh well...my last dance before my vacation...could've been better, but could've been worse! ;)

04-12-2004, 03:15 PM
Well, actually I'm not going on much of a vacation, more of a week of really intense studies...but I have already scoped out a Salsa dance that's going on near where I'll be staying!
If I have time I'm going to go...wait...I will go dancing come hell or high water! Of course, being that its not in CA I will have to deal with smokers in the club (ugh!)...but I'm very curious to check out the dance scene while I'm away.
And if all goes well, when I return the following Sunday, I'll be in a mad rush to get ready and hit my favorite Salsa venue...my flight gets in a bit late but I should be able to get to the club for few hours of dancing . ;)
Lessons learned...I sat down too much last night...I even sat out a Bachata...never again! :D

I don't know SD...he is 3 hours ahead of us but still...if it isn't past midnight Pacific, it ain't IRU! :D :o
I hear you on the sitting down thing Sagitta...I just had one of those nights where I wanted to watch more than dance. I did have a couple of great dances and even got a compliment on my timing and staying on beat (thanks Fernando). :)
I felt so bad about the Bachata...my teachers taught another lesson on it so the DJ played it a bit more than normal. She put one on and no one would get on the floor...and she looked around like "what's wrong with you people!" I would've gotten up there but I didn't want to be the only couple dancing...ack...that's no excuse! If Youngsta was there he would've smacked me good...wait actually he would've done some dirty dancing with all the ladies while I stood there jealous. :?
Sitting out is not an option anymore...I'm making sure of that...life is too short to sit down unless there aren't any ladies to ask...;)

I've found that after sitting down, it's hard to get back up to your warm-up (read: dance well) stage :x ! I was having to change shoes halfway through my "Playboy Bunny" party because my toes hurt so much after sitting down :( (now I remember why I stopped wearing my ballroom chorus shoes  )!
I never would have sat down in the first place if there were enough guys to go around :x .........!

It was what I expected, I guess. However, I found that I wasn't totally inept. The difficulty was really getting into the music. I find that once I've internalized the music, it becomes part of me, I can really dance, play with my partner. Got a little bit of that, but not as much as I would have liked.
I'm good enough now that if I have a somewhat good follower I can improvise a bit when I don't really know much, as compared to July /August of last year when I was a total ditz. So, it was good to see how far I've come. :D

Checking in at 2:50a.m. I am back from a house party. Not too much salsa, but an interesting experience nonetheless. When they played cha cha and samba no one danced cha cha or
samba, except one or two. :?

By the way, am I the only one with an extra empty side in thes thread?

Sure, but now it's gone.
Being on page 96, I got an option to visit page 97, but I got an "error, this tread is empty" reply.
Now I can see page 97, and there is no page 98, so either the problem is gone, appearing when a page is nearly full, or my pc thinks it's April the 1. :?

It keeps on coming up in this threaad. Not sure why? :? First I blamed Pyg. Then I saw it happening for so many others and felt ashamed. Perhaps the thread is suffering from lack of sleep?  :)

Yeah, for some reason (other than just the simple fact that it's Jenn's fault ) this thread seems to prematurely generate a new page when the final post of the previous page is made. Don't know why, but the lack of sleep suggestion makes sense...

I saw "Iron Chef America". I prefer the Japanese version any day. Isn't as much drama in the American version, something is missing IMO.
peachexploration

Yeah, the American version maybe a little more about "show" rather than cooking. I boycotted the last one for that reason. Just my opinion. *shrug*

The last one, the mixed-team match was actually really good.
As far as the differences, I miss the dubbed in voices, the "chairman" doesn't have the same impact (even if the original one is his uncle), they give too much camera time to the supporting characters, and the tasters, as a group, do not seem as informed about and open minded to various cuisines.

Checkin' in after a good night of dancing. My crappy mood because of the weekend is in tatters, blown away by the wind. Great crowd, with good vibes tonight. The way it should be. Met many people whom I introduced to salsa and are coming out for their 3/4th time!! More salsa dancers, me happy!! Must learn to transition better between LA and cuban style so that I can danec with everyone, though.

In a pinch, I have found that the boxed stuff tastes pretty good, so provided you have the time and cooking facilities, it's at least possible to make it yourself.
