:) I went out on Saturday night, and danced for three hours - every dance with a stranger! So many strangers, so little time . . .
Not very many strangers this weekend, maybe 2-3. Spent most of my dancing time with familiar faces.

Okay. Danced with at least half a dozen strangers last night but 3 were wonderful. Emma, Christy and Ranata sp? Ranata and Emma are sisters. I danced with Emma and she doesn't know how to dance salsa...but she can move in a very beautiful way. For besito she offered a full frontal smooch, but it was so unexpected that I did her cheek instead!! :( She enjoys moving with me, smiles, connects.... I gave up dancing salsa with her but just danced with her and the music. Dancing with her is enough reason for me to come back next week from visiting my relatives... Ranata, I wasn't sure about..but I loved my bachata with her. Not a pronounced hip motion, but a comfortable partnership. Less out there than her sister, but still beautiful.. And Christy? Another one who really enjoys the music and dancing. Every second I was with her was a ball. When someone dances with me I want them to enjoy it and to share my dancing love. With these three ladies I especially had a good time. And two will be back at least next week!! :bouncy:

I danced with a stranger!!!!
I don't try to be a snob and dance only with people I know, but the people I know just generally keep me moving so much that I don't really have an opportunity to dance with strangers. However, on NYE there weren't many people who had come to actually dance, most just wanted to listen to the band, so the few of us that came to dance just danced with each other. One of the guys I knew by face but we'd never actually met (and now that I think about it, we did not officially introduce ourselves to each other... so I don't actually know his name! Gonna have to fix that quick!). We danced and it was so great! Good connection, nice lead, a little short but totally workable... I had great fun! I'm going to have to find him again and dance with him! :D
I danced with 3-5 strangers on Saturday night. I must admit it's getting harder to find strangers to dance with!

I danced with 3-5 strangers on Saturday night. I must admit it's getting harder to find strangers to dance with!
The London event ensured I got a healthy number of stranger dances over the holiday period. Even though there were a few faces I knew, I didn't dance with any of them, so all my dances there were with strangers! 8)
Apart from those two nights, not many... only 3 or 4 strangers during the entire holiday period?

I danced with a stranger!!!!!
He was too short and not comfortable with it. But it was ok. I had a good time.
Slowly but surely, I'm finding a stranger here and there... I had to ask him, but whatever. Oh, the smallness of my dance scene.... My girlfriends are taking me to a new place to dance, but doggonnit, I think they tipped off a few of the guys we regularly dance with to be there. I wish I could just walk into a place and not know anyone (or very few people).

Small dance communities are the pits. :( My sympathies, MTM. And, if you want to dance with strangers rather than your usual, just say no. Or at least try to say no. Hang in. Your girlfriends mean well. They may be misguided, but they mean well. :)

Don't know... my SO was surprised when I told him I don't get asked very often. Of course, I realise that I'm actually difficult to grab because I'm usually either already on the dancefloor or on the move, stalking and grabbing guys! I'm not patient enough to wait for a guy to ask me...

Heh - doing the MacMoto as you self described it previously...
I've been lucky enough to know Follows who are popular in this way... it's a shame that most Follows tend to equate asking as being beneath them.

Ok, so I didn't dance with a new stranger, but my most recent stranger asked me to dance again tonight! I can't say it went any better than last time, but that was mostly me, I think. I was a little tired and not really "feeling it". :? When he asked me to dance, I had already started thinking about going home and was getting into that frame of mind, but then he asked and I couldn't say no - I was so excited to have a stranger ask me to dance again! WooHoo!!!!
Overall, tonight was a good dance night. The dancing wasn't all that great, but I feel like I worked thru some stuff, um, interpersonally. I think some progress was made with a problem I've had and it's good.
Only about 3-4 strangers last weekend.

3 strangers on Friday night!
I like it quite a bit when I get to brighten the night for someone who is otherwise is having a mediocre night. One of those folks who is looking bored and isn't getting asked, and whose demeanor brightens up once the two of you start dancing. You can almost read her body language as saying, "Finally!".

WooHoo!!! I danced with a stranger!!! Ok, technically he wasn't a stranger, we have danced before, but it was a year ago before I really got heavily back into dance, and I never saw him again, and strangers are so few and far between... I think here, he counts as a stranger.
I had a BLAST! I think he did too, he kept coming back for more and asked if I'll be around again. It was so fun! He was very playful and kept me on my toes. Fun fun fun!!!!!

Only danced with a single stranger last night (Kindra, whom I had a lovely dance with)...
Does it count that I sicced a bunch of my favorite salseras on a couple of guys that I know who were visiting from out of town?

Danced with quite a few strangers at the salsa ball on Saturday. Didn't count -- probably not quite 10 but close. There were some fantastic visiting salseros! :D
6-7 strangers on Saturday night.
I got a typical "Oh no, who is this guy asking me to dance" kind of look from one of them. She appeared really relieved and happy by the end of the song.

I danced with a stranger recently  and he should have remained a stranger!
Talk about slimy! He was only interested in holding the girl close. I subsequently saw him ask other girls to dance and a few of them left him on the dancefloor! He kept kissing my hands  and was holding my hands as I was trying to walk off the dancefloor. :? I felt so "yuck" I had to go and wash my hands!
But, being a person who always looks for the positive  we went on to the dancefloor about 1.5 mins before the song came to an end  talk about 1.8mins too long! (the extra 0.3mins was the asking and going onto the dancefloor part  )

Danced with a few strangers on Friday (can't remember how many -- three?) at my favourite monthly and some more on Sunday (about six?) at York's Sunday Social.
But what was REALLY amazing was that I went to a strange town and managed to find a couple of non-strangers... it's a small world for us salsa nuts!

It's been a while since I posted here -- but that doesn't mean I've stopped dancing with strangers! I just got out of the habit of *counting* strangers... And of course, everyone I danced with (except my SO of course) during my April holiday was a stranger. 8)
Last Friday I was asked to be a taxi dancer at a monthly. The job is to find people wearing a beginner badge and ask them to dance. I said of course and started dancing. There weren't many people wearing a badge, so I just kept asking people I didn't recognise, then after a while I thought, "this is what I do every time I'm here anyway!"

I was talking to my salsa friend while out dancing tonight that I could just see who would be there dancing tomorrow night...
when a salsa community is quite small (we have a so called "in-bred" salsa community here) and with not so many international visitors, the number of "strangers" available for dancing becomes really limited.. :? I guess I really gotta venture out someday (when I have the money  )
total number of strangers for tonight: 2. One of them is not even a stranger... just never danced with him before.
MacMoto

He still counts as a stranger for the purpose of this thread* -- here are the rules:
they have to be a stranger to you in the sense that you have never danced with them socially. :D Therefore, dancing with them in class does not count - it is 'artificial' (stopping and starting, rotating etc) and how often do you actually dance a whole song in class :D (Plus, it will help make this challenge easier  )
Recap on the ground rules:
1 - you must not have danced with them socially (any dance) except where you have danced with them previously but haven't seen them for say two months or more (one week isn't long enough   )
2 - it does not matter who asks who to dance, as long as you dance!
3 - any other suggestions?
* The purpose being:
the point is to dance with people we have never danced with before. There is a tendency to stay within our comfort zones and only dance with a few "friends" which a) does not help our dancing and b) adds to the perception of cliques, even though it is just a case of shyness :?

Well, between Friday and Saturday here, I think I danced with a total of....probably about 15 to 20 people, although if we are also counting house parties, then I would bump it up to almost 30. I go to lots of USABDA dances around here and they occasionally play mixers, so I dance with lots of people on those nights ^_^

But would all those people Mitra be "strangers" in the dance sense ie. even if you have had Sunday brunch together, that you have never previously danced together or have not danced together for 2 months or so?

Oh yeah, these are all strangers, most of these people I have never met before in my life. If we wanted to count people I know but have never danced with until today, then it would definately be at 30 or more, otherwise I would say just 25 to 30 for complete strangers.

It was a monthly, i.e., the "club" is put on monthly by local salsa promoters in a hired venue that is not a dedicated salsa/latin club. The promoters who run this club have always been keen to focus on beginner friendliness, hence the taxi dancer/beginner badge idea. Works quite well -- people who are not taxi dancers also try and give beginners a dance.

Danced with a stranger from Sweden this weekend. What a great dancer! :D He's a friend of one of the Edinburgh teachers and is apparently an organiser of salsa events in Sweden.
Last week I went to a club and, partly inspired by this thread, decided to dance with strangers only.
I have to add that my social dance life has seen several phases - starting phase where almost every follower was a stranger and I would get 9 letdowns for 10 asks, phase two with some more girls that would dance with me, phase three with hardly no letdown at all, phase four with some girls being angry because I would not manage to dance with all the ladies that expect to be asked. Not that I am such a darn good dancer but I notice when a lady that I know has to wait at the side for a longer time. So nowadays beginners fade somehow out of view without really wanting it.
But that day I danced with 7 strangers before I asked a lady that I already knew. It was great fun and I really enjoyed it. And when I danced a second time with one of those seven then she asked me:
"You have lost a bet, haven't you?"
