Hey to everyone...this site was recomended by a person close to me, and just checking it out......my question is this.....has anyone competed in ways like to see who dances the longest for a contest or to break a record? Just wondering. :P

The most taxing marathon dance was by Mike Ritof and Edith Boudreaux, who logged 5,154 hours and 48 minutes to win $2,000 at the Merry Garden Ballroom, Belmont and Sheffield Avenues, Chicago, Illinois, USA, from August 29, 1930, to April 1, 1931. Dance marathons were eventually outlawed in most states of America.

Because this sort of thing has been outlawed in the US (because people were dying), I know these sorts of marathons are now banned. Wouldn't you hate to come in second place?

I think dance marathons have been outlawed in the US, but there's one scheduled for this weekend in Malta. 8) Looks interesting, although the article doesn't mention anything about people trying to break records. Maybe it's just the dance itself which is going 24 hours, not any specific dancers. *shrug* Who knows?

I don't know if there are still rules on the books that apply, but historically, dance marathons were banned in lots of places. Of course, that was back when marathons were endurance tests, with couples required to dance continually for hours or days, or whatever. Things have changed a bit since then.

Reminds me of a movie with Jane Fonda (?) called "They shoot horses don't they?" From recollection, it was about a dance marathon and the partners would take it in turns to sleep whilst on the dancefloor (the other partner would ensure that they kept moving ever so slightly) :shock:

Last year, not long after I first joined DF, we had a Salsa Marathorn for MS, which I help promoted (of course, this one comes close to home, big time).

The rules were pretty relaxed, as we just wanted people to have fun :D ! There were a number of scheduled breaks, which I took advantage of & slept on a very comfy couch :P ........!

See, part of the healing process for MS (or any illness for that matter) is that you are not allowed to stress! So why would we want to stress people out (and creating more sufferers :roll: ) in the names of charity 8) :lol: ?!
