Hello everybody!

I've lurked on this board for a couple of months, but not recently as I'm now a *roaming* salsero. Originally from Canada, I had my first taste of salsa in Panama, and then took a few classes in Montreal (Canada). Now I find myself in Amsterdam, and I was hoping some of the members here would be able to recommend a school to me?

My criteria:

1. English or bilingual instruction (my dutch is pretty basic... no pun intended :) )
2. Salsa on 1 (LA would be my first choice)
3. Fun atmosphere

That's it!

Always enjoy following the threads here, keep up the good work.

- Jay

Hi RoamingSalsero and welcome to DF!

One school you might like to try is http://www.dosbailadores.nl/

I know that both Leo and Monique who set up Dos Bailadores speak english very well.

May I make a suggestion? Try the classes in Dutch  That way, you really have to watch the teacher in order to follow and your brain may not question as much

Hallo RoamingSalsero, leuk dat je naar Nederland komt!

Never been to Amsterdam to salsa, so can't tell you anything specific about the schools there, but can give you a link dealing with the amsterdam salsa scene (in english):
Guide to salsa dancing in amsterdam (http://www.xs4all.nl/~ehautus/salsa-amsterdam.html)

Should be enough info to get you started. If you have anymore questions, ask away, or if you need a quick translation of a website, let me know.

Patrick Mussendijk came to our Midwinter Salsa Ball in Edinburgh as a guest teacher earlier this year and was very well received. His school is listed in the link Tasek provided, under "Lessons".

Welcome, RoamingSalsero!
You should have no problem finding decent salsa lessons over there as Amsterdam is an international city and they LOVE to dance! The Dutch speak the BEST English I have ever heard with a lot of them better than people from my native California! Good luck!

Welcome RoamingSalsero

I have been taking some lessons from Morry. He is a brilliant instructor. Very logical and skilled, also in educational theory and practice. We have been so fortunate to get him to Denmark on some occasions, and I have already signed up for his next workshop. He got a large network of schools around Amsterdam. We have been talking about driving 1000km to his workshops and after parties.

I have to say that you folks have just delivered the warmest welcome I've ever experienced on the internet (and I've been online for a long time!).

Thanks!

I've been looking over the Guide, and I'll give Patrick Mussendijk a call based on MacMotos suggestion.

You're right Pacion, the language isn't really a big deal for dance lessons! I've had 'em in Spanish and French as well - two kinds of lessons at once :)

Best regards,

Jay

If your roaming takes you across to Scotland (we are next door neighbours after all), be sure to let me know! :D

 She is flirting again!

Roamingsalsero, not sure where he is based, but I gather that Orville Small (salsation.ca) is in Holland for a couple of months? Might be interesting for you to see if he is in Amsterdam as I have heard good things about him.

Patrick Mussendijk is lovely  :D

This post has been moved here from another thread:

I will be in Amsterdam for a week or some during the end of May. The most recent thread I found was this:

http://www.dance-forums.com/viewtopic.php?t=4023&start=0&postdays=0&postorder=asc&highlight=amsterdam

but its a bit old.

I have also seen http://www.xs4all.nl/~ehautus/salsa-amsterdam.html but I really would like some more personal info.

Any Reccomends? I primarily cuban style.

Thanks in advance!

From Salsa Forums, Dance Forums sister site:

http://www.salsaforums.com/viewtopic.php?t=370

Here's some adresses I found:

De Rotonde (La rotonda)
Leenderweg 300

De Tongelreep (this is impossible to translate...sorry)
Antoon Coolenlaan 5

De witte dame (the white lady)
Willemstraat 2

El Palacio de la Rosa
Mauritsstraat 12

El Patio Salsaluz
Kloosterdreef 49

And found this as well:
http://www.santiagodecuba.nl/

Since I'm not Dutch, I've never been to any of these places so I can't tell you if they're any good...

FYI, I found these on www.salsanet.nl

But in case you can make it to Antwerp (1.5 hr drive from Eindhoven) I'd be happy to give you a tour :D

Anyway, have a good time here!!

Salsaludos,
Erik

RoamingSalsero,

Welcome to DF!

In the Netherlands, salsa has been booming for years (we lived there from 1996-99 and already then there was fierce competition).

I can recommend Brian van der Kust to you, see www.footworks.nl. He is a great salsero and a Jazz performer. He has dance training and also teaches dance technique to his students, not just steps. However, he is in Rotterdam, not in Amsterdam.

I know Leo and Monique (dosbailadores), they are not in Amsterdam but in Leiden.

I also know Morry, but do not know his teaching, only his dancing. However, I hear from reliable sources that he is a good teacher.

There are tons of salsa teachers and salsa schools in the Netherlands, everything from very good ones to mediocre ones. Take a look at several ones and see for yourself if you like what they do.

You don't have to worry about people not speaking English, in the Netherlands even the little kids speak some English. In the big cities and in the salsa scene you do not need any Dutch at all.

Hope you will enjoy.

hi there Ray, nice to see you here... but please watch your english...hahaha

i can recommend Extremos (w w w. extremos.nl). Ivan and Jennifer teach LA-style. Jenniver is a texas lady originally, so i guess her english will be ok
The other teachers named in this thread are very good too, but not all located in Amsterdam.

Maybe we'll meet sometime in Amsterdam.

So, this is all good info about classes, teachers, etc. but what are fun club nights in Amsterdam, where salsa dancers from elsewhere can just drop in and get moving?

I'd appreciate any advice as I may well be in Amsterdam for a holiday in the near future. :D :D :D

Cantinero in Amsterdam is a good place to start with. Most popular nights are friday and sunday night. Really crowded but fun. If you prefer a bit more space you should go on saturdays.
