Great question MissAlyssa! Honestly...I don't remember! :(
I'm fairly sure it was by accident, i.e., just following a link from some ballroom website.

Salsa Rhythms website, and from Fernando's newsletter. I had tried a couple different forums before on different topics but they all degenerated into a bunch of nonsense. I took Fernando's rec' and swore that if it was bad advice he would have a price on his head. Hehehe :)
Lucky for him that it was good advice! Actually I checked out the salsastreaming website that he mentioned first, and as it wasn't too bad I decided the forum would be pretty good too. :D A good thing that salsa site was good otherwise I would be missing out on all this :bouncy:

Well we're glad that you have found us, and have decided to stay and actively participate!! :) What do you mean by in a more Dominican style, i.e. how do you dance bachata now?
HothouseSalsero
12-20-2003, 10:20 AM
The way I started dancing bachata was in a closed position, but not one where my hold body would be in contact with my partner's body--but that's the way it's meant to be danced. What I have observed is that the dancers who look the most impressive doing bachata dance it with some sort of syncopation/hesitation that I don't think I am doing. I am assuming that they are dancing in a more authentically Dominican style. (I have discussed this with a Puerto Rican salsera who knows quite a bit about dance, and she has confirmed that I am probably not really doing the dance.)
It's a Dominican dance (okay, maybe derived from Cuban bolero son--or is it son bolero?--I get mixed up) and I think it's relatively new even to a lot of Latinos in North America. I'm not sure the Puerto Ricans in Philadelphia really know how to dance any more than I (a non-Latino) do.
Sagitta
12-20-2003, 10:49 AM
Let's see for me the hesitation is on every 4th beat. Step, step, step, tap. The foot points, and the hip is raised on the tap. Is that what you're refering to? As for closed position if you haven't much practice partner dancing it seems awkward. You can have closed position facing each other. Then there is the closed position with both partners facing in the same direction, either with leader in front of follower or the other way around. When I first started dancing I didn't do much closed position with body contact. Now it just seems to happen naturally depending on the music. I think the fact that I'm comfortable moving to the music with someone else just translates into this happening.

I used to (and still do) go to this Portuguese forum to read the salsa related posts. I really enjoyed reading them, lots of fun and interesting stuff. I never signed up though, I was just an "unregistered visitor". Anyway, since I enjoyed the forum so much, I started thinking there must be other interesting forums out there.
I searched the Net a number of times and never found anything I liked. I was so desperate that I even checked out a Dutch forum. Most of the posts were in Dutch which meant I didn´t understand a word. The English forums weren´t any good either. I had given up hope when I tried a google search for the last time . Somehow, I clicked on the right link and got here. :D
What I found on this forum was much more than what I had expected. I never knew there could be so many interesting threads, with such great advice from people who obviously knew what they were talking about. I was hooked! I only wanted to become an unregistered visitor but after a month I couldn´t stay away, so I signed up. :D :D

I REALLY enjoyed reading the posts in these threads. It seems the word is spreading through forums and links and even search engines. That's great! Better still, we have some great people here who are making some excellent posts. :D
I used to follow rec.arts.dance back in the 1990's. I heard about web based forums back then, but I preferred the usenet. Then, I got a new car and found discussion forums of fellow enthusiasts of my model. I liked it once I got used to it, so, last week I googled "dance forums" and this site was at the top of the list. There wasn't much else there.
Didn't Dancevision have a board too? I can't find it now. It's a shame that all these message boards have splintered the on-line dance community. It would be huge if we all got together at the same place.

Neil, you are probably thinking of the DanceScape Forums (http://www.dancescape.com/mydancefriends/). They have a great community over there too, but I'm a little biased toward the Dance Forums.
(hmm....I wonder if they would let someone post a link to the Dance Forums from DanceScape?)
pygmalion

Dancescape is nice, too. I am totally biased, but I have to say I prefer DF because it's smaller and more personal, and tends to have fewer mean rants when people disagree.
SDsalsaguy
02-22-2004, 01:50 PM
Yeah DanceScape's forums are OK too... but almost every thread seems to turn into some type of sniping from anonymous posters. Also, even though they're bigger in absolute size our activity level (i.e. posts/day/week/month) is currently much, much greater.
As far as being able to post a link to the DF, I seriously doubt it! There standing policy is to delete any links or even references to non-DS-aproved sponsors. That was actually one of the things that first atracted me to the DF... that people could actually have conversations and mention other sites, etc., as called for by the subject... without such references being deleted. DS is a great site but, first and foremost, it is also still a business... the DF is something different.

Westiemonkey.com
The site is now defunct, but on occasion the material on here pertaining to WCS was quoted. When I started doing promotions for a local monthly dance I joined up to advertise (ek, I'm bad) but got sucked into posting in the swing thread before ever getting around to posting the party.
Of course, I don't help market the party any more but am still here!
to replace Westiemonkey, we now have whydance.com, of which I am a moderater, and I'm now the one bringing in quotes from DF as talking points. Vince A had some interesting thoughts on connection over footwork as a starting point for beginners that spurred a conversation over there.
Since joining, I've also gotten to meet people. I met D Nice in Reno at the Reno Dance Sensation and have been at the same dances as Randommysh although we keep missing one another. Lily is another dancer I've met through DF.

westiemonkey is sorely missed. (Yes. I used to lurk there. ) But whydance.com is a blast.
I think that's one of the cool things about belonging to a forum. You get to meet lots of people and get hooked up with many online and offline resources.

Funny hijacking story:
Fridahy night a bunch of us from Whydance.com head over to a studio to get our West Coast on. I'm running late, show up, and the creator and owner (Michael) of WHYdance is sitting in the lobby talking with a hustle dancer.
They had known each other about 8 months ago when Michael first moved to the city, and during their conversation before I had arrived, it dawned on the guy that this Michael and the Michael from WHYdance were the same guy.
So I get introduced, the guy stares at me and goes..."oh, you're THE Christina, the one from WHYdance."
Who knew I was such a celebrity!
I really got sucked into the WHYdance board because I missed Westiemonkey. We had a great archive and resource, so we're having to rebuild the entire concept. It's working though, even if I have to have conversations with myself to get things rolling.
I'm like the Pygmalion of WHYdance, way too many posts ahead of the other members!

"The Pygmalion" -- I love it!!! Maybe that should be the Rank title for anyone over 20,000 posts on the DF? That wasy it will be both her screen name and her rank (soon)... and it'll be a looooooooooooooong time until anyone else ever qualifies for Pygmalion status (although there'll always only be one real Pygmalion!)!

I love the idea! But it's very important to have the "THE" infront of Pygmalion.
And girlie...I will make sure you don't catch up with me on WHYdance...I have the power to delete posts...and I will abuse that power. Just call me Bunny.

Thank you. Thank you.

Nah, I'll just start a thread for myself in which each post reads: "post" "another post" "catching up" "talking to myself" "la la la la la" "another post" "post" "post" "post" "one more" "and another"
I'd catch up quickly.

See, that's not the point. Kind of pointless and waste of time for me to do so. I prefer to participate constructively and let my posts accumulate as they do.

Maybe we go out and have conversations with ourselves? It amuses my friends when I talk myself through things that I do.
By the way I'm heading to NYC this weekend....hmmm...

While I found this site quite a while ago and have already posted my response to this thread, I just wanted to add a few comments...
I love DF! I love the online friendships I've formed, the dance community I've been embraced by, and the knowledge I've gained. It's amazing to think here we are...all from different backgrounds, in different areas of the world, with one major thing in common...our love of dance.
I feel truly blessed to be a member of this forum and the sister site. I hope in the near future to see more people respond to this board by saying they found DF from DDL (with the prominent links on my site)! I truly admire this group and am thankful for all of you!
