 British Summer Time is coming to an end next weekend (31st October) when the clocks go back an hour at 1am. Any suggestions on how to celebrate/use this extra hour?

(Do I need to add to keep it child friendly   )

Since the change occurs in the middle of the night, everybody gets an extra hour of sleep. That's what my plan for it is (Daylight savings here).

For the kids, it will cause sunset to occur one hour earlier, so they will get to go trick-or-treating earlier on Halloween. How's that for kid-friendly?

Well, on 31st Oct I'll be at the Geneva Congress, and Central European Summer Time also ends on the same night. Considering the party that night is supposed to end at 3am, at which point the clock is supposed to go back, I've been wondering if that means we will be getting an extra hour of dancing time or an extra hour of sleep...

The European Summer Timer rule stipulates that the clock goes back at 1am Greenwich Mean Time on the last Sunday of October. I take this means the clock goes back at 2am British Summer Time and 3am Central European Summer Time...

I'm fairly certain the clock switches back by an hour around 1am in my time zone, too. This means I'll likely be getting an extra hour of sleep after dancing on Saturday.

I know ... doesn't sound as fun as getting to dance for an extra hour ... but hey, I'll take the sleep anyway. :)

Okay. I know what I am going to do with the extra hour now :? work out which clocks change automatically (ie. the computer) and try to remember/read through manuals to work out how to change the time on the other "clocks" in the house - shower clock radio, alarm clock, clock on mobile/cell phone, various other clocks  Thank goodness I don't collect clocks!

My lovely next door neighbor decided to use the extra hour by getting up early and mowing his lawn. Honestly, I woke up at 6:00 AM to the sounds of his edge trimmer. :x :headwall: There ought to be a law against such things. How about a little consideration for those of us who wanted to spend the hour doing something normal, like sleeping? Grr.

Sagitta
10-31-2004, 07:02 AM
Spent the extra hour chatting on the phone!! Woken up from a deep sleep by the phone, at 1:00, as I forgot to switch from ringer to vibrate option, or to turn the phone off! So I chatted from 1 until 2:00 something, over two hours! How often can you say that? 1 hour actually is more than 2! :)

I've been suffering horrible insomnia for the past few nights, so if I get to sleep I will enjoy sleeping the extra hour.

If not...I'm also behind on general housework, so I'll spend the time neatening and tidying up. I also need to hand-wash a ballgown, and I'd better do it tomorrow so it will drive before I pack it up Thursday to go to my next comp.

Definitely sleep.

I just convinced my mom that the clocks are supposed to be set back an hour and not forward as she'd thought. I wonder if everyone in multiple-person households has completely coordinated the clock-setting duty: who does it, how many hours, which direction. I heard of one couple that ended up early at church because both of them (unknown to each other) set the clocks forward.

pygmalion
10-29-2006, 01:30 AM
I usually set the most important clocks on Sunday when I first wake up. Setting them on Satuday seems to rob me of that extra hour -- not sure why.

There've been times when the "unimportant" clocks (like the ones in guest bedrooms) didn't get re-set for months. I'm kind of a slacker. Kind of.

Oh, I'm in Melbourne. But we change at the same time as Sydney. Tasmania changes a week before us. I think QLD may begin a trial of D/light saving this year; until now they haven't done it. So, for our relatively small 'island' sometimes we would have 4 time zones.

In fact I didn't go out that night, but if I were a normal 25 year old, I would have stayed out for an extra hour of dancing. But I did get TOO MUCH sleep and the good old dehydration headache... been months since I slept more than 6 hours before getting up (salsaddiction)
