Hi!

Talking about dancing on2 or NY-Style you can hear about "Palladium".
How is "Palladium" danced?

there are also Instructors/Dancers like Razzmtazz, Raul Avila or Ron&Bettina Rosario not dancing/teaching the style of Eddie Torres.

What style do they dance/teach? Are there specific names for their styles?

Thanks a lot in advance!

Hello Salsa-Surfer.. Welcome to the forums..

Palladium style is danced stepping on beats 2,3,4 6,7,8. They hold the first count of the beat then continue on to step on the 2. Known also as power2. It is also referred to as on2. I say also because there is a second on2 style mainly danced in NY City and is known as the Eddie Torres (NY City) on2 style. Which is danced 1,2,3 5,6,7 but still breaking on2. With this style the male steps back with his left foot on the 1, then again steping back with his right on the 2nd beat, stepping in place with his left on the 3rd beat, then traveling forward with his right over the 4th beat on way to the 5th beat (starting "middle" point). The left foot moves forward to hit the 6th beat and the right steps in place. The 8th beat, as the 4th beat, is stepped over as the man's left foot travels to hit the 1st beat. Although we are stepping on the 1st beat it is considered on2 because the major body movements come on the 2nd and 6th beat of the music.

I was just watching one of the RazzMTazz videos and I noticed that the girl also turns on the 2 just like ET2 style?

It's like guy preps girl on the 6&7 and then turns the lady on the 2&3.

Is that correct for power2?

I always had the idea that for power2, it's just on1 shifted back one beat.
i.e. On1: guy preps girl on 123, turns her at 567.
P2: guy preps girl on 234, turns her at 678.
ET2: guy preps girl on the 678, turns her at the 234.

However, after watching the video. I felt screwed up again.

So for Power2, do you actually spin the girl on2 or on6?

Thanks in advance :)

Correct. The pattern for Power/Palladium/En Clave On 2 is like On 1 one beat delayed.
So for Power2, do you actually spin the girl on2 or on6? This really doesn't depend on whether it's On 2 or On 1. It depends on when each is breaking forward. A usual Outside Underarm turn is performed as the lady breaks forward, then she pivots to her right, etc. This will happen on the 2-3-4 or 6-7-8 depending on where she is breaking forward. If the man is stepping forward on 2, she will be stepping forward on 6 so she will be doing most turns on the 6-7-8.

Since this style has been passed down for generations from the Son and Mambo of the 50's there is no set rule for whether man steps forward or back on the 2. On the other hand, ET 2 leads start back on the 2 because he teaches it that way and it's more or less their convention.

Usually leaders coming from On 1 will break fwd On2; ET 2 dancers back On 2 because they'll be used to it. RazzMTazz teaches man breaking back On 2.

You can do whatever you and your partner feel most comfortable with. Some will say you're right, some you're wrong and some do what you feel. :-)

Ah... I see :)

I was puzzled as I took a workshop from Sky Dance of Puerto Rico during a congress and they taught that men should break forward on 2.
However, when I got home and watched the RazzMTazz video that I have, I noticed the men break backwards on 2.

Now, it all makes sense! :o

Thanks a lot for the valued advice :)

Thanks a lot for the valued advice :) I live in PR and most break forward on 2. I was taught to break back On 2, but I like breaking forward first. I like that for two main reasons: 1. I find it easier to hit breaks on the music with moves or dips on the 1 if I'm turning the lady 6-7-8. and, 2. On shines, which I learned starting on the forward break, you can set up a call response thing in which the man can start a shine 2-3-4 and the lady can shadow or respond on the 6-7-8. Sort of an I go - you go sort of thing.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't almost everyone mean ET On 2 when they say "On 2" in the club? In my view, the words "P2" and "On 2" are almost mutually exclusive in vernacular conversation.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't almost everyone mean ET On 2 when they say "On 2" in the club? In my view, the words "P2" and "On 2" are almost mutually exclusive in vernacular conversation. The meaning depends on where you live/are and what style they usually dance/teach there. In New York and East Coast the assumption is ET 2. In other places where they don't teach ET 2 (other parts of US or other countries), On 2 is assumed to be the traditional Mambo\Palladium\En Clave basic because it's the one they know. (Aside: I wonder who coined the term Power 2. I've heard Angel Rodriguez from RazzMTazz, who teaches P2, use the phrase you "Power forward on the 2" ...but don't know if he coined the term.)

I think one should just be aware that there is the possibility of confusion depending on who you're talking to, by just saying "On 2" without qualifying it further.
