Hey Jen!

Isn't that "practicing the lift in the lake" scene great?

Welcome to the forums.

Hi JenSwayze,

Welcome, and thanks for joining. :D

I hope you'll have some great experiences here. I hope you'll participate in some of the discussions (and start your own) and make friends with us.

Sometime...I'll have to tell you about my experience with the "Dirty Dancing lift".

Thanks,
David

the lifts are awesome. And who doesnt love the final scene?

I would love to hear your lift stories...Email me any time you like, or share right here.
I enjoy talking to people with the same interests as I do. Perhaps the majority here are much more experienced and trained than I am.Well of course you are. I'm mostly self taught.
Theres always room to learn!
In fact I have alot of room.

thanks again! Jen

Everyone should see dirty dancing, and if you can, the dvd. the extra features are awesome, of course theres tons of dancing. (of course). They also have the dirty dancing concert straight from the 80's, with all the original dancers from the movie, its great.
Now you decide if im obsessed or not

I'm brand new here too.

And I will add two odd dance movie tidbits:

JLo and Richard Gere will star in a US version of "Shall We Dance?" (a sweet Japanese film about an uptight business man who learns to ballroom dance). JLo? Gere? Ew.

Second -- there is a Latin "Dirty Dancing" in the works. Not quite sure what I think of that yet :-)

of course the lovely Jennifer Beals...werent the 80's the best for dance movies?

On the issue about the new dirty dancing film, i'll be very skeptical until I see it. Im sure the dancing will be great, but living up to patrick swayze, jennifer grey, and cynthia rhodes? I really doubt it. but we'll have to see. i'll admit im wrong if i am in the end! :)

Hey JenSwayze,

Here's a sad, sad thing. I've never seen the whole Flashdance movie *sigh * . I hate to admit it. All I've seen is the two-bit, lowdown, rip-off by J-Lo, and passing clips of Flashdance.

Questions: How does the dancing in the two compare? Is Flashdance out on DVD? Does JLo really have thighs like that, or was she airbrushed? The world may never know ....

Welcome to the Forum, JenSwayze. You're certainly among kindred dancing spirits here.

Dirty Dancing is definately one of my all-time favorite dance movies. You just gotta love Patrick and his ultra-suave grooves.

Flashdance is another classic. I think almost everyone who's ever seen that movie has wanted to be a dancer...even if for only a moment. Gotta love it!

The new dirty dancing movie "Havana Nights" is scheduled for release in February 2004 (just in time for Valentine's Day). Patrick does have a role in the film, but he is not a lead dance character. Check out the official site for more info, to view the trailer, or browse through screen stills: http://www.dirtydancinghavananights.com/home.html. There is also a brief plot synopsis and cast info on my site: www.dancersdreamland.com.

Upcoming dance movies:
~ A Time for Dancing ~ based on the same titled book by Davida Wills Hurwin about a young dancer and her best friend whose one dream is to make it into Julliard. Tragedy strikes as one falls terminally ill. A MUST read!

~ Camp ~ Follow the summer of a hip teenage group as "stars to be" head to a summer camp of the arts.

~ The Company ~ A behind the scene look at the world and life of a ballet company. Starring Neve Campbell

~ Havana Nights ~ The sequal to Dirty Dancing.

~ Shall We Dance ~ A remake of the 1996 Japanese film of the same name. If you haven't yet seen the 1996 film, you MUST see it. It's light hearted and fun.

~ You Got Served ~ Follows the competitive world of street dancing where crews battle for money and respect.

For more information on these upcoming movies, check out the my site. From the main page select "Fun" and then "Movies." If you know of other soon to be release films, please let me know as I'd love to add them to the Dream Land.

09-13-2003, 09:36 AM
Oh yes! I do love google!

The body double in Flashdance is Marine Jahan. I was able to find lots of articles on google and ask jeeves, and now I remember. There was quite a controversy at the time, because the body double wasn't credited, then she got bent out of shape when the movie was a big hit. She was on a few talk shows too, if I remember correctly.

Hard to find her name, though. She's listed as "dancer for Jennifer Beals" under cast and crew for Flashdance on Blockbuster.com.

Can't beat google for a good time! :D

swing kitten suggested i do this...so here i am.

joined last week, at dnice's suggestion. he's my lindy/bal/swing dance/i want to be the world's best follow--please help me teacher.

i've been swing dancing for about two years now. started dancing in general about 4 years ago (country line dancing and 2stepping--don't do that at all now).

took some general ballroom lessons, then ECS. from ECS to charleston and i've never looked back.

i take lots of classes--met damon and started studying with him about 18 months ago. right now am taking lindy, bal, carolina shag and hiphop.

social dance at least 1.5x/week (some dances are every other week).

and i take workshops and go to camps. this year was my first camp year; went to catalina, lindy summit and camp hollywood.

am specializing in balboa and collegiate shag. which is funny, because until recently no one in sacramento was doing either of those dances. thankfully, damon has started teaching bal, which is great for me, because i get more practice and i get more leads with whom to dance! yay.

am 52 years old (hence my signature) and sorry every single day that i waited so long to start dancing. suffer with a neuroma in my left foot (an affliction of middle-aged dancers and runners; great). use different kinds of mechanical workarounds and -- sadly -- dance a little less than i'd like.

enough bio...glad to be here.

right now am taking lindy, bal, carolina shag and hiphop.

Do you feel the hiphop is helping with your other dances? That's what I experienced. Something about all those isolations and cotractions just spills over into control in other dances as well for me. Do you agree?

and i take workshops and go to camps. this year was my first camp year; went to catalina, lindy summit and camp hollywood.

Talk to me about the camps. I'm shopping around, trying to put together a schedule and goals for the next year or two. There's another thread on dance camp recommendations. Please share your experience.

You're not interested in C&W anymore? Or did swing just take over your soul? Just curious.

Swing has definitely taken over. Not only don't I dance country any more, I can barely stand to listen to it and that's different. Although I was never a big country fan. But I listened to a lot of Dixie Chicks and Robert Earl Keen. Not so much any more. Now I listen to Louis, Ella, Count Basie, Bobby Darin, Billie Holliday............it's gotta swing.

Talk to me about the camps. I'm shopping around, trying to put together a schedule and goals for the next year or two. There's another thread on dance camp recommendations. Please share your experience.

Camps were overwhelming, fun, exhausting, fun. I'm in the minority...I went to class almost every single time period and went to bed relatively early. Very little late-nite dancing for me...Of the three camps I went to--Catalina, Lindy Summit and Camp Hollywood--I think the first and last were the most valuable for me. I prefer camps with more than one class per time slot; more choice, more likely to meet my somewhat obscure needs (balboa and collegiate shag). If I find the dance camp recommendations thread, I'll post this there too.

Thanks for asking; this is fun.

Really? :? Like what??? :?:
Besides Footloose, the only ones that I can think of off the top of my head are "American Anthem," and "Staying Alive."

I see his name quite often. He was in a recent popular dance film I believe, but can't think of which one???

Hi JenSwayze,

Welcome, and thanks for joining. :D

I hope you'll have some great experiences here. I hope you'll participate in some of the discussions (and start your own) and make friends with us.

Sometime...I'll have to tell you about my experience with the "Dirty Dancing lift".

Thanks,
David

Hey David! I don't think you have told this story as yet  The Enquiring minds are waiting
