Candlestick? Do you know what swing dance? That might help the googlers out there.

hi
maybe i should give a short description of the move i mean.
You take the girl up, let her kind of sit down on you right knee with her legs (so she is not really sitting), get her up again and swing her around to the other knee, than get her up again, and she have one leg on each side of you, than you'll get up her the last time for the move and put her back on her feet. Did this help?

phooey! All I've found so far is instructional videos (for sale) on swing aerials, etc, by the TC Swingin Hepcats, which include the candlestick. Sounds like a totally cool move! :D I'll keep looking. :D

Ahh, I think I understand what move you're looking for. It's an acrobatic move, and after she's had her legs on both sides, her hips are pushed up so that her legs go up into the air, before she's set down again. Right?

I've done that (and broken a lamp in a hallway trying it with a friend, never expected her legs to go that high into the air), but only directly into the one leg on each side, up into the air, and down again. But swinging the lady on both sides first are common too.

I know I've seen videos of it, but I don't remember where.

Firstly, why are you looking for this? You're not planning to try to do it based on a low resolution video clip are you? Because that would be a really bad idea! This is a reasonably dangerous move, especially while you're learning - it is very possible for the lady to go "over the top" or "off the side".

Having said all that, you can probably find something at http://www.dcswingdancing.com - Tom and Debra do it a lot (though Debra usually intentionally goes over the top - the so-called "candlestick death-dive"...)

I'm pretty sure that move was in Grease with John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John. Also possibly in A League of Their Own, as well as many others set in the 40's and 50's. It's a pretty popular move.

A straight up version with no Boxcars (sits on each side) is shown in several of the movies in which Frankie Manning and the Lindy Hoppers performed. One leader seemed to make it his trick specialty.

The Aerial Video tapes put out by the Stevens sisters are very good. They show the moves in a lot of detail, show the timing necessary, and the part each partner plays in making the move succesful.

Please, do not try these by just flinging a girl around mimicing what you THINK you see. And especially not on a crowded dance floor. :?

The first part (the side to side then straddle) is called "boxcars" or "sidecars". The "candlestick" is specifically when from her straddling him (and he's bent over), he leans back lifting her and she basically flips so that she's vertical above him [they facing the same direction but she's upsidedown). It's an awesome and impressive aerial to do (with a chick you've practiced with) but I too would not suggest learning it from a pixelley mpeg... Get someone to teach you in person. :D

Tom & Debra (and their Death Dive) have been a long-standing inspiration for me. 8)
