Okay, I am going to admit to feeling fairly *sorry for myself*! I am sick - coughing (dry), sneezing, running eyes/nose, headaches... and all I am craving for is chocolate ice-cream  :?

I am trying to eat something a bit more substantial  otherwise I would be full of just cod liver oil and a particularly cough medication (thanks to my darling father) and ice-cream.

There is the "old wives" saying: feed a cold and starve a fever. BUT if you are just not feeling hungry at all?!?

When you have the cold/flu, do you tend to have particular cravings? If so, what?

I thought it was 'starve a cold and feed a fever'?

Recent research indicates that chocolate is a cough suppressant, so maybe you should go for the ice cream!

I simply listen to my body and do what it asks for me. Sometimes sleep, sometimes more dancing...sometimes forbidden foods...others more fluids...

SPICY food! Hotchachacha!!!! Java curry, Thai tom yam soup (with cilantro, Sagitta, Mmmm!), hot salsa... Heck! Just pour some tabasco down my throat and I'm a happy camper! I like it so spicy that it makes my nose run even more (which is not a pleasant sight, so it's much better that I indulge my cravings in private. )

Pacion, I do hope you feel better soon. Sleep and plenty of fluids....

I'd have to vote for the spicy foods, as I learned quite a lot from my non-American friends. From what I hear, ginger root and HOT red pepper will cure pretty much whatever ails you.

(Of course, I'm assuming you're over the cold by now ... either that or you were very, very sick.  )

I will vote for grandma's chicken soup (as one, if not the only, grandma on df).

Chicken soup is good for colds for sure. Something about the chicken fat I believe... :)

 yes I am thanks! I think the cold "moved out" after the zillionth cod liver oil tablet :?

LOL! At least you're taking the tablets. When I was little, my Mom used to give me the liquid. Evil stuff! *shudder*

It was either cod liver oil, or Father John's. Do you have that in the UK? It's black-colored, turpentine-smelling cough medicine. Eww!

Curry, Vitamin C, Chicken Soup, Cod Liver Oil...?
I say go for the Chocolate Ice Cream. That always feels great on a scratchy throat!

Tea!

Green tea or Mint tea are my favorites when I'm sick, but any will do. :) They just make me feel healthier, somehow.

Used to!?! My father still gives me the liquid (as recent as 4 weeks ago!) AND still manages to find the largest spoon in the kitchen   But (!!) you should see my nails now

LOL! I was talking to my Mom about this thread today.

When I was little, she had maybe ten things, max, in her medicine arsenal. Quinine (ew), castor oil, cod liver oil, medicated vaseline, aspirin, vicks vaporub, Father John's, epsom salt, and a couple things I can't spell. That's it. No matter what was wrong, you got a dose of one of those things. And thrived. Hmm.

Ah ha! Asafetida! (Had to look up the spelling.) That stuff was great for anything that ailed the stomach. Hideous to look at and truly stinky, but it could handle any stomach ache in a flash!

I don't think you can legally buy it in the US anymore. It contains alcohol, or a narcotic, or something, I think. :?

Time for me to feel "sorry for myself" again.

This time, I think it is a chest infection/chills. I was so cold yesterday, but the sort of cold/chill that if water touches your skin, you feel "cold".

My place was 28 degrees and I was in bed with... two duvets  (comforters I think is the US word?) AND a thick wollen jumper when normally, a cotton sheet is MORE than adequate :( After about 45mins or so, I finally fell asleep and woke up feeling "warmed up" but that seem to have released the coughs and now my eyes ache as well :( I think I am going to get some garlic today and umm, stay in "solitary confinment"
