Most people have a specific career/job (or two or ten) that they wanted to be when they "grew up"...heck most of us probably still do (hehe). What did you want to be when you were little?

I wanted to be a marine biologist (because I excelled in the sciences), own a business and be a dance teacher (no joke). I am well on my way to my last two goals and have long since forgotten about the first one. :)

Hmm...let's see if I can recall...

When I was really young, I wanted to be a stay a home mom and have like 20 kids...then I found out about child labor through school and movies and decided that was NOT the way for me. I petrified to even have one...we'll see what happens after I get married. (probably way too much info...my apologies)

Then, I wanted to be a teacher. My grandfather, who is more like my father, didn't think teachers made enough money and he kinda talked me out of it. I still have an inkling to be a teacher, but I just don't want to go back to school for that long...that's why I'm thinking dance teacher: you get the best of both worlds.

Then, I was going to be a lawyer...I'm pretty good at arguing. I realized I could never defend someone I knew wasn't innocent or stand up for someone/something if I didn't believe in it. Besides, who am I to judge.

Somehow, I fell into administrative assistant in college and then marketing. Ultimately, I want to own my own dance studio.

Oh yea, I had one of those "I want to be a high school history teacher" because 1. That's what my grandmother was and 2. I had a crush on my JR year history teacher. My parents have always tried to tell me to be a lawyer because I could argue my way out of pretty much anything as a child (and still lol), we even had play mocks in jr high where I was a lawyer in a fake case. My 'collegue' and I actually "won" the 'case'. I never wanted to be one though..

When I was really young wanted to be a virologist (yeah I'm serious). In H.S. I wanted to be a Fighter Pilot (I'm in the Air Force and I am aircrew so got pretty close to that one). What I'd REALLY love to do is own my own recording studio. I have a degree in recording engineering just itching to be used. Maybe when I retire from the Air Force (6 more years!)

A lot of the time growing up I wanted to become a veterinarian... wanting to help-- I utimately discovered that that would mean only seeing animals when they are sick, wounded, and or dying and I knew I wouldn't be happy with that.

There was a period in high school when I wanted to open a silent movie theater-- I still think that would be awesome!!... but I'd just want to design it, still a spell at soda fountain where I could watch the soda jerk do all that nifty soda jerking providing a period atmosphere (although they weren't in movie theaters but who cares!) and watch movies there, not run it.

Then there was that week in first grade when I thought about what it would be like to be a tree... I didn't actually want to BE one... just thought about it [/i]

When I was young, I wanted to be a nurse because my oldest sister wanted to be a doctor. I guess I thought we could work together. In HS, I put in an application in an old folks home but can't remember why I never worked there. I do remember the smell of medicine about knocked me out. Not a good sign. Then I wanted to become a famous photographer. Instead I got married very young and had 4 children, went to business college when they got older and became a legal secretary. (I think raising kids might count as being a nurse.) LOL!!

Well when I was young I wanted to be a teacher and a stay at home mom. Um...well I guess nothing has changed since I am a teacher and in a few years I'd like to have kids and be at home with them. :D

I just found this!

Thought Id share what I wanted to be...... I wanted to play AFL (ie the australian rules football)
I was so utterly determined, and I actually believed they would let a female as good as I was going to be, play in the league !
I was about 12 when it dawned on me that it probably wasnt going to happen!
How I wish I hadnt lost some of that childhood hope!

So I moved on, to childcare, which I did for 3 years until I had my own kids which is where Im still at.

ShyDancer--you rock! :D

For me....

Heigh diddle dee dee!
An actor's life for me!

Although I was pulled in different directions--I was also mega-into paleontology; when I was 8 my dad and his grad assistant took me to the site of the discovery of a mastodon skeleton in the Florida blackdirt region of NY.

And I wanted to be a mystery writer--still working on that one.

But the pull of the theatre wins every time for me--the roar of the grease paint, the smell of the crowd....

Up to about grade 7 or so I wanted to be a biologist of some sort (and go figure, I can't stand biology classes now  ) Through highschool I had my heart set on being a computer game programmer. And now I don't have a clue. :)

A stay at home Mom. Byt then, that's what my Mom did, and she was a great role model. Too bad a major social revolution came alone and spoiled all that.

Missed this thread earlier. Oddly enough, when I was in kindergarten I wanted to be a zookeeper of all things. Living on a farm for a while taught me that this wasn't the life for me.

I have always wanted to be a writer...hmm...someday... :? :P

When I was 10 I wanted to be a pathologist/forensic scientist. I reckon that's even stranger than wanting to be a virologist! I mean, what kind of 10 year old thinks that poking around with dead bodies is an appealing career? Well, probably heaps do now, since CSI made it all look so glamourous. But back then it was just plain weird. Too bad I turned out to be so terrible at science in high school. :)

When I was little I wanted to be an explorer.

I read a book about the Lewis and Clark expedition, huckberry finn and the whole Jack London series and the adventure bug took hold and it still holds me to this day :-)

Myself...I wanted to be an archaeologist. Had my college education planned out until my parents said there was no money in it and they wouldn't pay for it if I didn't choose something worth while. So, I majored in business.

Well Temptress, Iīve always loved finding hidden things. When I was younger, I used to dig up my backyard in search of clay pots, utensils, rare stones, etc. (my parents didnīt like the idea too much... ) In grade 4, I had to do a rock collection and I loved it! It was the best science project I had that year! I went to the library and read books about rocks and classified them according to their names and characteristics. Hmm... kind of embarassing now that you think of it...

I really admired those people who discovered mummies, ancient civilizations, fossils,... In the 5th grade after studying fossils, I searched all over town for one. I didnīt find any. :( I was heartbroken... I guess I liked the adventure as well as the adrenaline I felt when searching for things.

I spent the better part of a day in Mexico (on a rock climbing trip) looking for fossiles in the rock.

It wasnt' until I got to the top of a 1000 wall that I found out that the fossiles were up there.

Apparen'ty the Petero Chico was formed by an earth quake, and the fossiles (which were close to the surface) were pushed up with the rest of the rock.

(in another part of the gorge, some dinosaur bones were discovered not long after we left)

Very cool. My fascination of course originated with the fossils and the fact I grew up smack-dab in the middle of Civil War country. The only difference is that when I was in 3rd or 4th grade...I could find the fossils. They were faily numerous in several different forms throughout my area because of the shale beds.

Also...because of the central Potomac River local...I used to find Civil War bullets and arrow heads everywhere.

Finally, I participated on two different 'digs' as a volunteer here in my current residence Pensacola, FL. Arguable...the oldest city in the U.S. (has been embroiled in a battle over these facts with St. Augustine since). So...it is still an interest.

I'm just a big nerd.

After graduating from first grade I wanted to be a dancer. Born of old-world Irish immigrant workers, I was given the name of Eugene Kelly. Still wanting to be a dancer, it just wasn't going to happen. The name, Eugene Kelly, just didn't sound right for a dancer, and besides, I couldn't sing, nor did I like being in the rain. So, entertaining was out. For a while!

I changed my name to a good Italian name, the one that I have now. I really liked the idea of "rubbing someone out," but eventually gave up the idea of being a masseuse.

Now, with the same name, I'm the owner of a bed and breakfast, restaurant, and bar and saloon, and also work for the government. I'm older, much wiser, and I still like to dance, and I would love to be in front of people entertaining them - especially to try my hand at being a comedian. That's also the reason why I play in a blues band.

Guess I should have stuck with my very first whim. Yes???

When I was growing up I wanted to be a dancer on stage. There is the old story that every kid wants to run away and join the circus. Well I wanted to run away and join the stage show at the casino down the coast. We went every year and I so badly wanted to do what they were doing. Never wanted to be an actor, just a dancer.

I also would have loved to join Young Talent Time which was an Australian variety show where kids were brought in and taught the "entertainment" business and they basically grew up on screen. Had to leave when they turned 16, I think. That show brought to the spotlight people like Tina Arena, Dannii Minogue, Jamie Redfern, Karen Knowles, and many others I just can't think of right now. I probably never would have had the voice for it, but they danced as well, and that's what I wanted to do.

Over the years I was encouraged toward a more "mainstream" career choice and those dreams were lost. It was just never an option in my family that dancing could be a career. I now know better, but it will be virtually impossible to get into a performing career at this stage. Edging towards teaching.

I was at the Johnny Young (as he was known then  ) for 2 years!
I can just about remember my entire routine to Flashdance...and I was about 10 when I learnt it
My most vivid memory of those dancing and singing days was one of my friends getting her head caught between the barre and the wall

Fantastic! I can't remember if the school was set up in every state. Being a kid, it didn't register to me that the show was in another state and unless my parents moved there, I just couldn't do it!

I'll trade you a brachiopod, petosky stone and horn coral for a civil war musketball and an arrowhead!!!
