View Full Version : Dance and prejudice

Are there still many misconceptions and prejudices about dancing and latin dancing among men? I mean, women outnumber men, because perhaps there are cultural and social factors that make men less prone than women to take up dancing. Do you think it is related to education? If kids started being educated since early on in school or so (like I believe it happens in some countries, but not mine) towards gaining awareness for body expression and dancing, do you think that would make them more susceptible to view dancing as a natural thing and not like something "a guy should not do"? Ideas?
There was a pretty long discussion a few months ago about whether men dance or not.
Here's the topic that I found during a search:

I know what u mean. Some people still have prejudices, but I dont`t let that limited people disturb my passion for salsa.
Why should I only watch women dance, and admire?
I prefer TO DANCE WITH THEM, in 2 is more fun.
And one more good reason, it`s one more good turn on for women, lol.
But I supose anyone here knows that

This is an easy one!
A guy that's trully a guy, DOES NOT DANCE! And that's final!
A true guy, at the very minimum, must play a contact sport, like rugby (note: nothing against the sport itself!), and then go and get naked in the shower with the rest of the team.
A true guy, will watch 2 ladies dancing together, in desperation for lack of partners, and never, I say never, step in and take part of the action by dancing WITH them! Both if needs be... :!:
That's just the way it is...
A guy that dances must definnitly be a bit poncey...

I don't know, Carey Grant dancing with Grace Kelly or Ingrid Bergman didn't look that poncey to me. And I'd scratch out Myrna Loy's eyes in a heartbeat to dance with William Powell. That man makes every other man who has ever existed look like Ken.

I think Houdinni is kidding. Hence the use of the emoticon  , the reference to rugby, and showering naked. Tongue planted firmly in cheek.

You would rather be in a roomful of WET and NAKED MEN
than have a beautiful, hot, and wonderful woman in your arms?

Hum... From the contents of the last comments, I get the idea that maybe I'm unable to pass down IRONY, into a language that's not my own...
True. I haven't yet written enough in this forum for people being able to quite catch either my style of writing, or the general idea of my opinions, but COME ON! Was the irony of my comment so difficult to catch???!!!
Maybe it was... :(
Still if I shocked sensibilities by beig missundestood... I apoligise.
Note: Poncey isn't propper english? Though I'd heard it somewhere

I thought your post was pretty funny. It's not the language, you wrote just fine. I've no idea why the humor missed some entirely either. Maybe everyone's taking the stuff they read here too seriously?

Yes, definitely if you come from a Latin or southern European country, where the macho culture is more... say, prevalent, you're less likely to misinterpret the kind of comments Houdinni made. If you lived in Portugal, Spain, Italy, among others, like Houdinni and me, you would realize there would be hardly any room for misinterpretation. Do you agree squirrel?
I sometimes don't seem to be able to be completely clear in my own national forums, and get the message out, let alone a major international one where I have to "speak" a language which isn't my native idiom.

I do come from such a culture... but sometimes I have difficulties with other idioms, no matter how well I speak ... it's the "local expressions" and their meaning I cannot get! :)

Clear as a bell for me, too. Others have written similar stuff(or wasn't it some guy who wrote, with similar irony on a related link about dancing and men being predestined to not want to dance yadayadayada) that gave us a good laugh!

how about the idea that men who dance (well) make better lovers?? that thoroughly contradicts this claim that only "girly-men" dance right?

by the way, do it think it's true? (re my first statement)

@ africana: I doubt men who can dance are necessarily good lovers... But I say that you can find out one guy's style of lovemaking by the way he dances... not how good he is, but how you are going to get treated... the same way he leads! :)

Got me worried there for a moment! :) ahh houdinni,im glad it was irony, im sorry for jumping the gun,but understand where i come from(philly) as the indians used to say white man speaks with fork tongue, having seen nasty stuff on message boards and in real life and double speak meanings i saw something else, and a good way to fish someone out is to wiggle around  ,plus your handle made me wonder since we all know who and what houdinni was  .i mentioned philly but also mean ny and new jersey, in that if we hit people straight up, we know where there coming from for real.-street lingo.again sorry for the hard words.

No harm done.
One MIGHT wonder, why would someone who had the opinion I posted (for real), e doing discussing in a dance forum... but hey...
As for good lovers make good dancers (or the other way arround)... It can not be judged quite so simply! I've met girls who were great dancers, but not so great lovers, and girls who are quite the oposite.
Still, from the girl point of view, the way a man leads you, might give you some insights on how you'll be treated outside the dancefloor...

Someone mailed me the following link, about a psichology study about why man don't dance...
The text is too big for me to post, so I'll just post the link for anyone who might want to take a peek...

Yes, I think many of us have read this before. It was on another thread. We all had some comments on it but most of us found it fairly entertaining to read...
