Yeah. I wouldn't exactly call her a hip-hop dancer, either, although lots of entertainers, including Britney, are incorporating some hip-hop moves into their routines. Not quite sure what her style should be called ... :?

Britney Spears!!!!
Disagree. She's learned some choreography for her tours and videos but if you had her try to free style it? I don't think so.

I think her dancing is more like the slutty kind of stuff that cheerleaders do when they're not tumbling. There are FEW Hip Hop moves in her dances (like isolation moves, mostly).

Well, I've been dancing Hip Hop for 8 years and I've also seen Britney's dancing. I did not say that she doesn't incorporate ANY hip hop in her dancing, I just said most of it looks like the moves that cheerleaders do to remix hip hop music and whatnot. Britney just gets onstage/in front of a camera, does a little hip hop and gyrates the rest of the time. To me, that's not dancing. But hey, to each his/her own.
I also saw the 'Me against the music' video. From what I remember, she did a few tricks with her cane, jumped around a bit, and did a couple hip hop moves. I don't know what the 'hip-hop dancing room' is though.

So britney spears only real dancing is hip-hop.
So what is Jazz because alot of people take jazz because they think that's what everyone's doing!

I explained it here  http://www.dance-forums.com/viewtopic.php?p=124981#124981

It's not exactly "the thing that everyone's doing". It 's definitely not a type of dance you see in clubs :!: You just go to a dance studio and take it. That's all. It's just a beautiful dance done with out a partner. You can't really do anything with it, unless you're in a recital at a solo/group competition.

Maybe she didn't know what to call it, either?

And I agree that Britney does a little hip hop mixed in, but mostly choreographed something else (don't know what) that fts whatever image she's trying to portray in the video. *shrug*

Some cheerleaders are VERY straight-laced. Not all do slutty dances, although some do, IMO.

I guess what this thread has me thinking is more along the lines of, "What is a hip hop dancer," rather than, "who is a hip hop dancer?"

What makes a dance or dancer hip hop, in your view?

If you google hip hop dance, you can find some hardcore hip hop sites out there -- it's a culture, as well as a dance. And good old Britney would get TOASTED by the dancing some of these folks can do.

Just curious as to what others think.

IMO, pop culture has done pretty much what it always does, when it comes to hip hop -- embrace a chunk of it, then homogenize the heck out of it, to make it attractive to the mainstream. Meanwhile, losing a lot of the original flavor. Just my two cents, but then, I don't know much about hip hop.

Anybody care to comment?

I agree. Pop singers such as Britney have stylized Hip Hop and turned it into something almost totally different than what it started out as.

And if anyone here has seen the movie "You Got Served," I'm sure you'd agree that Britney's dancing couldn't even compare to the stuff the people in that movie could do.

THOSE were hip-hop dancers! That's how we used to get down in my neighborhood.

Britney Spears certainly doesn't dress like a hip-hop dancer, nor do I think she has the attitude either.(I am not saying this in a negative sense)

if i had to name it i'd say she does 'choreographed popular dancing'.. could be a mix of stuff here and there.. but basically.. she does as is instructed by the dance director..

i thnk she's a good mover tho and has good feel for the beat..

Yeah... Honey and You Got Served is real get down and dirty street hip-hop...LOL. The way I like it....and what I do.... and Brittney's dancing looks nothing like that.... and I wouldn't say that she does slutty moves that cheerleaders do when there not cheering...b/c I was a cheerleader ... and we didn't do that.... so I don't know what you would call her dancing.. I guess more of a funk with a little bit of hip-hop and cheerleading moves in them..... IDK... I'm confused ....LOL... :?

I think the really good hip hoppers out now are of the Usher and Ciara vein. So Smooth and cool.

Usher's awesome. The moves from the Caught Up video are what I've been learning the past few weeks.

Brittany is not a hip-hop dancer, but she does hip-hop. She is actually a very talented dancer and could easily step out of singing and become a well recognized dancer in what ever dance style caught her attention... primarily because she has awesome body awareness, a good ear and feel for rhythm and has a work ethic that would make most people drop from a heart attack.

She was a dance and aerobics instructor before she became a pop-singer (this was after the MMC). She might not be able to throw down at a battle but in a club she could easily hold her own, and in lots of cities do more than that.

Don't mistake what you see her doing in the videos as what she is only able to do, just like her dancers, she has a very varied background covering ballet, contemporary jazz, funk, tap, etc. etc.

However if you want to see good hip hop in a popular music video look to Ushers or Missy's videos. They can both put down some moves and have awesome background dancers.

BTW her dance style in videos would be either video dance or funk depending on the video in question.

Come to think of it, yeah, it does. Something along the lines of "Smooth Criminal" or his other hits. Speaking of "Smooth Criminal", a salsa troupe in Southern California put together a salsa routine using that entire song and it's absolutely awesome to watch.
