Your posted question was a bit vague. Were you referring to listening to hip-hop & jazz or dancing to it? They are completely different styles of music AND dance, with completely different backgrounds. I'll wait for a musicologist to do the explaining.

In Hip Hop, my teacher always says to slouch and try to stay low to the ground. Your movements must be flowing, but sharp and quick at the same time to distinguish one move from the next. Hip Hop also involves break dancing. It originated up north among minority groups such as blacks and hispanics. It is danced to a genre of music called... wait for it... Hip Hop! What a surprise :D
Jazz, on the other hand, is closer to mordern and lyrical. Flexibility is a must and it has a lot of leaps, spins, jazz splits, etc... The music is smoother and more melodious. I've actually never seen it being danced to Jazz music. Go figure... :eyebrow: I've seen people use alternative, pop, and even certain country songs for jazz dancing. A lot of types can music can be used for jazz.
I hope this helps... it's kind of vague, so if you have any specific questions about anything here, I'll try to explain it better.

Hmm, not sure about the slouching. Yes, you do keep low to the ground because a lot of the movements can call for it but the slouching would kill your back over time. I think it's more that there are some movements will have you slouch, briefly, but not maintain that posture for long periods of time.

I often notice that "slouching" pose when some people dance hip-hop. They look like mummies to me. It's not attractive (to me anyhow) and I'm wondering if student-dancers are being instructed to slouch. As Beto previously stated, it's going to ruin your back in time, but not many teenagers who are really hip on the dance could care less, I would think. :?

From what I've seen at the dance studio where I take hiphop, any kind of slouch you *might* see is usually an in-between move. It's not something you hold. Could be the middle of a shoulder roll or body roll. Anyhow, all the warm-ups and isolations done prior to learning the week's routines usually get my body so in tune and ready that there isn't going to be any damage or soreness from what's taught.
