I am attending a meeting in SD on March 10-13. I have a clue about my schedule, but I would like to know if there's any dancing that I should plan for instead of "networking."
I don't plan on spraining my ankle this time. :)
Basically just about anything goes: ballroom/Latin, swing (esp WCS), or salsa.
PM me if it's possible to include me into whatever dance plans that usually occur.

Heya etchuck! Well, the previous weekend would have provided several more options, but assuming that the meeting can't be rearanged based on dancing plans, here's what I can tell you...
Ballroom: Friday night at Champion Ballroom, 8-10pm, $7
Salsa: Friday & Saturday nights, La Jolla Marriott, first week with a new organizer so I'm not sure of the specifics but should be music at 8pm, lesson 8:30-9:30, dancing until past 1:00am, $8 (I'll update if I get any new information).

Etchuck, I was in San Diego last May. SD mentioned the Friday night dance at the Champion; I went to this and had a great time. It's a pretty nice studio.
For me the best one was the WCS dance at the Starlight Dance Studio. These are done Fridays and Sundays except that on the first of the month there's a Saturday rather then Sunday dance. That was the one I attended and it was incredible. Here's info for that:

Ooo, sounds like a fun trip.
I've seen the guys from Majesty in Motion perform. Quite nice. I'd take a workshop from them if I get the chance to visit...
Have fun!

Doesn't Parker Dearborn teach at the Starlight?

Yes, that name is on their staff list. I don't think I met any of them though.

Parker is, from what I have seen, a great dancer. (WCS) I also have a video workshop by him. He appears to be a very good teacher also.

I would like to take another trip to San Diego myself; might just do so on a three day weekend this summer.

The meeting runs from 8am to 6:30 pm Friday and Saturday. There are "optional dine-around" networking dinners both evenings, which obviously I can arrange myself out of as needed. Too bad there isn't much on Thursday when I fly in and have nothing planned on the schedule yet. I know I'm staying near downtown as most conventions usually take place there.

Etchuck, are you into Lindy Hop? there use to be a Thursday night lindy dance at the starlight, but it looks like it has been moved and here's a link on that:

You're pretty close to the Champion if you're staying downtown.

It's only a few blocks north on 5th avenue, by Balboa Park, just north of the heart of downtown. Sounds like between Friday's and Satruday's dance choices, you can catch quite a diverse flavor of San Diego dancing from Champion and Starlight.

I'm decent at Lindy, though I'm not as good (in my opinion). Of course, lindy and WCS are similar in certain things so I can probably be okay.
Drat, drat, drat... I would have liked an hour of watching or taking a lesson from Porfirio. :(

Yeah, and next weekend (the week before you're here) is UCSD's annual collegiate/amateur comp with a show that night by Bob & Julia...

Of course, this weekend is Heritage Classic in Asheville. I don't have my ticket, but I am hoping to split out to attend Friday. I have plans for Saturday, and I can't skip too many days since I'm leaving for San Diego the following Thursday.
I am staying downtown at the Holiday Inn Harbor View (I believe). So how really close is it to Champion?

Dear Etchuk:
I see you neatly managed to avoid LA. I was going to suggest Costa Mesa on Saturday, the 12th, for tango class and milonga, but that's probably too far to drive. Besides you might run into a vicious tango dancer there, and get yourself mortally wounded again . . . .
There's a Thursday Night Tango Milonga in San Diego, which you can find by searching the internet. I went there last month when I attended that tango weekend. I had a fun time, and met some really, really nice people. I understand you sometimes dance tango in between bodily injuries.
You might also try to contact Susan Lake at Susan Lake Productions, or at www.WCARTE.COM in San Diego. She seems to be "Hello Central" for all things dance in San Diego, not just tango.

I didn't mean to avoid LA... it just wasn't as convenient to fly in this time. :)
I plan to be out in LA again in June for my sister's graduation... but let's get to that bridge first.
I'll see about the milonga, but I do have to "network" too. :)

Good news: I guess I'm really close to Champion Ballroom.
Bad news: I didn't realize how far away it was to the Convention Center. Unfortunately they won't provide shuttle service for the meeting until Sunday... after my mini-meeting is done. Sheesh.
I presume I should bring my solid pair of dance shoes?

I will be. Who knows what weird people inhabit the internet. :)
I have my Latin shoes with me, and hopefully there will be lots of people who can do just about every partner dance imaginable. :)

Wow that was a great experience. It's so much fun... and I didn't injure myself in the process. Definitely impressed... although the music was probably the one thing that I could complain about though it wasn't completely out of ballroom character.

Darn... afraid not. I had a networking dinner to attend. Maybe another time, thanks.
