Yup, SK, absolutely right. It is hard for many people to stay on the right side of that line. I've been working on that much of my adult life, and have finally come to the conclusion that it's a matter of balancing the things I have to do, with the things I like to do, with the people who are important to me, and always remembering to give something back. Fortunately for me, DF has all those things. The moderator in me has to do it, the dancer in me likes to do it, the friend in me likes the people and relationships, and the servant in me gives something back. Win, win, win win. Yay! :D

We haven't started shopping yet either. I think we're going to donate money to a charity or children's hospital in honor of all the people we would have bought gifts for. Then as a Christmas gift to each of those people, we'll give a small ornament engraved with the name of the charity/foundation.
I think that's the plan...

I celebrate Christmas.
Last year spent it at home, in India. This year spending it with relatives. We are doing the "Kris Kringle" thing. Everyone submitted a list of things they would love. It was all thrown in a metaphorical hat, and people picked out a list, and each person is responsible for buying one thing for the person whose list they've got. Here we have the excitement of not knowing what we are getting and who is giving something to us, but at the same time we know we will get something that we want and no-one will break the piggy-bank [It gets tricky when there are people of drastically different levels of income sometimes...]. So only one thing to buy and I only need to pick it out from a list of 4 things that was presented to me. :) Very easy christmas shopping!! :D
pygmalion
12-01-2003, 12:57 AM
Yeah. I celebrate Christmas too, but, since I am lucky enough to have dear friends representing most of the world's major religions, I know a bit about lots of other major holidays and observe, if not celebrate, a few of them too. More fun for me, but also my way of showing respect and support of my friends.

Random thought. I saw parts of three of my fave movies yesterday: Fatal Attraction, Ghost, and Sister Act II. Sister Act II is definitely not a classic, but I love the choir competition scene at the end -- Lauryn Hill before she got famous. That girl can sing! :) Either way, all three are movies I have seen a hundred times, and will gladly see a hundred more. :D

The crowd at the night club was very different tonight. Not many people about. I ended up dancing with quite a few tango dancers. I could tell as they all drape/ put their left hand in the tango position on my back/shoulder and are a lot more comfortable getting close then most of the college student Americans. In fact it was a wonderful experience. :)

Happy thought: I have had the most fantastic running experiences this past week. :D I've been running in the evenings when it gets dark and it's so calm and peacful. I get to look at all the christmas lights. Such an exhilarating experience. Are there any other people here who run for pleasure?

I run for pleasure, but only in the gym. I like to take an occasional leisurely walk around the neighborhood during the Christmas season -- I love the lights, too. But running, I do in the gym on the nice safe, boring machines.
I have a good experience this week, too. I made it to seven miles for the first time ever. My goal is to do ten miles, three times a week, plus five miles another two days. And I think I'll actually get there. Maybe not soon, but I'll get there. What a feeling of accomplishment. :D

Wow good for you Jenn! :D That's a lot of running, if you're running just for pleasure. (especially since you are dancing too!) I guess my pleasure comes from being outside in combination with the disassociativeness of running. I really dislike running on machines.

Great to hear of the pleasure of running from other dance enthusiasts. My left knee is bothering me and so I'm only using the elliptical at the gym right now. :(
There is this rumbling that I hear while I sit at my computer at work. Snow slides off the roof I think. A little unnerving. I was lucky it started snowing only last night, after I got back from dancing. Driving to work was a tricky proposition and I do want to go latin dancing tonight!!

Hmm. You know, I tend to be really goal oriented no matter what I'm doing -- even if it is for enjoyment. I have goals for almost everything. Like for DF, I have goals. 26 posts per day, 20 or more new topics per week. And I'm pretty consistent with it. It doesn't mean I'm not enjoying it. I'm just giving myself a milestone, to make sure I'm on track. Works pretty well for me. *shrug* Of course, I also know when to relax completely.

Happy thought: I think I'm going to get a pet for Christmas. Clue one: I'm pretty sure I saw a stray cat hanging around my house yesterday -- a pregnant cat. Needless to say, if I did, at least one of the kittens is mine to keep.
And if I was just imagining things (which I'm pretty sure I wasn't) I'm going to the humane society to adopt a dog.
Either way, by January 1, I'll have a pet. Yay! :D :kissme:

Great pygmalion. A pet to share your life with, something to love unconditionally and to love you back the same way. It's great to have that so when things don't go too well there is something to fall back on. :) Unfortunately the only pet that I can have at my place is fish. :( Have guppies in an aquariam!!

Now for my own little tidbit!! I had a great dance tonight. I almost lost faith in my ability to waltz after struggling at a dance on Friday night, and then the floor at the latin dance on Saturday wasn't great either. On top of that inconsiderate dancers at both places!! Collisions galore!! Anyway, as the dance tonight progressed I got my confidence back. With more slow waltzes I would be back 100%. People were more considerate here about collisions, or maybe it was just the fact that the floor wasn't as crowded. I taught people salsa, cha cha, rhumba, swing...and I love teaching :D A great start for the week. :D

Luckily these long threads are just like rambling long somewhat disconnected conversations. I don't think it matters too much that you weren't there at the beginning. It's like one of those days when you've been hanging out all night, dancing, cooking, eating, drinking, talking...it's the wee hours of the morning and on and on it goes...I miss those...Used to do it with my Kenyan friends a while back. Some people I know now are willing to do all that, but not the just kick back sort of dancing, so it's just not the same. :( I think that's why I'm atttracted to salsa. I see people chill out like that. :D

the feeling of life? That sounds profound. Care to expand on that?
A little, sure...in the "Learning Spanish to learn Salsa?" thread we have come to the conclusion that knowing the meaning of the lyrics, what is being said, is not a requirement to "feeling" the music and dancing to it. Too many people spend time searching for the meaning of their lives by doing something/buying something. Whenever the focus is the goal and not the process, life just passes you by. (It's like focusing on executing a complex move, vs feeling the music and doing simpler moves.) However, being in the moment and "feeling" life, whether it's dancing, or other more mundane pursuits is infinitely more enriching. :)

The above last sentence is something that I have just recently discovered.
And at my age??? Which proves it's never too late!
Besides dancing . . . I've recently discovered several new "old" things that I dearly love, but never had time for.
I've pitched the golf clubs . . . picked up the guitar again . . . and singing . . . and just last night, a musician friend of mine asked me if I wanted to sit in on a gig that they had to do. It seems that their bass player injured his hand, and they needed someone real quick.
I don't play bass . . . but I did. I had a smile on my face like you wouldn't believe . . . this kind of stuff is what life is all about!!!

No, that's the problem. I need some 16/17 year olds in there. If I was into the whole 'young girl' thing, life would be easy. But when it comes to girls of appropriate age, I actually need to make an effort, lol. Just wishing I could get the same response from the age group I'm interested in.

Random question. Did anybody see Lord of the Rings Return of the King yet? I saw it Friday. Big improvement over the Two Towers, I thought. But they left out some stuff that was in the book, and scrambled the timeline a little, I guess in an effort to make the screenplay more watchable.

Neo Devin. I've lived in Central Pennsylvania, where the temp was well below zero at least two months a year, and I've lived in central Florida, where the temp rarely goes below zero. Believe me, warmer is better. You can always take a vacation and go snowboarding or skiing or whatever. For everyday existence, warmer is easier -- sunnier, brighter, and much less hassle. I don't have a car, so no worries about that. Shovelling the walk takes maybe 5 minutes, so that's no big deal. I can go snowboarding every single day (as long as I don't have anything else to do). I think I'll take Alberta over Florida. Florida might be nice for a vacation sometime, just to spend some time on the beach, but I'd much rather live here.

To each his own, NeoDevin. If you prefer cold weather and snow, that's fine too.
I just remember with horror the winter I finally gave up and moved South. At the time, I was working full time, taking a couple college courses, and doing a pile of volunteer work. It drizzled ice or snow everyday, and there was a blizzard every Wednesday from January through the beginning of April. I scraped my car at least eight times a day for months. That's not fun. Great SG!! Yeh for you, and now yeh for me!! You talk salsa, I talk salsa!! I also have another regular salsa opportunity that is starting up. A group of people have organized a rueda get-together on Thursday nights to have fun dancing rueda, prcatice moves, learn new moves. It started tonight, and was a good time, learning two new moves (harmana, la dedo?), prcaticing sombrero, and some other moves. So that's my regular Thursday night activity. They even stop I think about 8:30 (only 1.5 hours) so I might be able to attend the Ctholic grad group meetings, albeitedly always a little tardy!! :D I'm also planning on checking out a salsa club in the weekends at Syracuse (an hour's drive!!), so that way I can have salsa every other day or so.
A couple months and a salsa addict I've become!
Not to say I'm not going to do ballroom! That's why it's salsa every other day or so!!

Right on Sagitta! Isn't Salsa great? I can't go a day without listening to it anymore...like you I've got a pretty good case of Salsa fever! :P
With my new dance schedule, I'll be going out Tuesday and Sunday nights, with Salsa class on Thursdays - so that would be almost every other day. I'm laying off the Ballroom classes for a while - it easier on the pocketbook and I can still go to the monthly dances and have fun. :)
I have never done Rueda...but I am on a sincere quest to learn some Cumbia! :D
I'm still not dancing as much as I'd like to since I'm recovering from my injury - but I'm getting better each day and not giving up my dancing by any means! I just have to know my limits and sit down when I need to, but I can still have a lot of fun! :)
What's that word that Boriken uses....WEPA!!!!!!!!!
(now he's just going to have to teach me how to pronounce it!)

Ah yes! Salsa classes/parties for me start up again on Sunday! WEPA!
(Sounds just like it's spelled. The e is pronounced like the e in egg. And say it with enthusiasm. 8) )
Random thought: Must take touch typing, if I'm going to keep posting. I still get at least one typo in every post, and keep having to go back and edit.

Looks like the Salsa fever is spreading.
Tomorrow I’m moving 40 meters down the street to a bigger apartment.
I’ll try to leave some free space on my new lacquered floor for salsa practice.
But if the Internet provider can’t reconnect the cables, I might be offline for some time.
Happy Random thought: Of course it will work! :bouncy:

Random (and really irritated) thought. I have a houseguest from overseas this weekend. He just gave me an impossibly small sum of money and a wish list from his wife. Now I get to spend my morning and early afternoon shopping (which I hate) on a small budget (which I hate worse) for someone I don't know (which I hate worst of all).
Grr.
I definitely need to learn not to be so nice. This has gone too far. Who says that, because I'm a woman, I'm genetically predetermined to know what HIS WIFE likes? Why can't he shop for his own stinkin wife?
Okay. Rant over. I'm better now. See you guys later. I'm going shopping.

Happy thoughts!! Just back from dancing. Zyedco workshop was great as I got reacquainted with the dancing that I had done some time back, plus learnt a little more!! After the workshop and dinner we had aband playing zyedeco music!! Then at ten was 80s disco night. I have never got so many compliments in my life!! Granted that they were from people who didn't really know how to dance, but I'll take any dancing compliments that I can get. :)

I've been going through a lot lately, both in my personal life and my dance life. And I've had so many people PM me to ask how I am. DF is truly a wonderful place. :D
Anyway, so the signature line is my way of letting you know how I am. Today, I'm large and in charge and feeling great. Today's signature line comes from one of those songs I learned around the piano in elementary school circle time. Pretty nostalgic, and a great philosophy, too. 8)

Hey Salsachinita, I've meaning to ask you about Jimmy Borch - is he Jimmy Bosch's long lost twin brother? Plays the trumpet instead of the trombone and was raised in Germany hence the strange sounding last name? :D  :D
My first live music event for Salsa was at a show that Jimmy Bosch played at - I was sitting there contemplating asking a lady that I knew to dance...and then I heard Jimmy say "if you haven't got up on the dance floor yet, now is the time folks, now or never."
Next thing I knew, I was up there dancing with her - I think I'll remember that day forever. :P

:?: there's an award for that? :?:
there's a perfectly logical train of thought that goes along with it...
I was brushing my teeth so I was in my bathroom. On the sink I have some candles. One of them is peppermint scented. Earlier this evening I enjoyed a delectable chocolate peppermint milkshake (yummy!). So it made me think aboout chocolate scented candles... now that isn't so far fetched is it?
