I'm taking a week off from dance forums. I had an awful 2003, a challenging personal life, and a run-in with my most recent dance teacher. I need a break to rest and regroup. So I'm taking a break for the next week. I won't be here, but I'll be thinking of you all.

Have fun (and post lots of stuff  ) without me.

Just thought I'd share with you guys........

Last night at one of my regular (waterfront) dance venues, I won a couple of Mojitos for "Best Couple of the Song" (dancing with my well-known salsero ex  )!

What made it really funny, was that he had NO IDEA that there was even a competition going on  ! (I knew, that's why I asked him to dance  )

Oh well, *shrug* I've been wanting to do a comp with him for the last 10 yrs  ! This counts 8) ........now I'm ready for a new partner......NEXT!

Happy thought. Tonight I received the best compliment I have ever had in my 7 months of dancing!

I was dancing in my Salsa class with an elderly Hispanic lady that had amazing frame and presence...and it was really obvious to me that she had a huge background in dancing.

After we danced a bit together, we stopped to rotate partners and she said "you have good rhythm, are you part Hispanic?"

Blushing, I told her that I was part Spanish, and she gave me a "I thought so!" look which made me blush all the more!

I feel kind of silly, but this totally made my day! Thank you, my Spanish ancestors! :P  :P

Happy Thought: my paint elevation got approved today!! What does this mean? It means I have a huge monkey off of my back so he should chase after someone else for a while! .... now I just have a bunch of little and medium sized monkeys to deal with and they are much better behaved although the have a tendency to gang up on me every now and then.

02-01-2004, 11:31 AM
We'd have to ask Barbra, I guess. It's a love song, and I think it's about emotional strength, vulnerability, and intimacy. What do you think?

Full lyrics:

People, people who need people
Are the luckiest people in the world
We're children needing other children
And yet letting our grown-up pride
Hide all the need inside
Acting more like children than children

Lovers are very special people
They're the luckiest people in the world
With one person, one very special person
A feeling deep in your soul
Says you WERE half now you're whole
No more hunger and thirst
But first be a person who needs people

People, people who need people
Are the luckiest people in the world.

With one person, one very special person
A feeling deep in your soul
Says you WERE half now you're whole
No more hunger and thirst
But first be a person who needs people
People, people who need people
Are the luckiest people in the world.

It actually is pretty amazing what a little time and practice can do!! I think back to 2001 when I didn't know a step, then to summer 2002 when I was just struggling with my left and right, and couldn't even follow the music in swing, to now. It's all relative, in a way. Someone told me that he enjoyed watching me dance salsa as I was smooth and in response I said thanks, but I'm a bad dancer!! What a way to respond to a compliment!! But, I consider myself a beginner, so it's tough sometimes to believe that I actually am not that bad. :)

Yesterday night I danced one merengue very different from the others. The moment I started dancing with this lady I noticed her concentrating on the beat and her light touch. To me it felt like she was skimming on the surface, or at least in order to mirror her I felt that I was restraining this pent-up sensuality within myself! An odd experience, in a way...enjoyable/interesting...sort of...and at the end of the dance she complimented me and said she really enjoyed herself. :? Still not quite sure what to make of it. She is one of those who is pretty good at rueda, probably better then me, a leader...it's interesting how channeling ones dancing in a new way clearly shows a person what one's norm is like. :)

Salsachinita, I think we all sucked at the beginning, I know I did. Unless you´ve got some sort of a dance backgound or you´re a natural dancer, you´ll definitely have major problems in the beginning.

Anyway, glad to know you´ve progressed immensly to the point that people recognize it and compliment you on it. The road isn´t easy, I know I´ve been there. Remember Edie the salsa freak´s story...

Dance plateau? Hmm… I’m suffering from the same thing. I’ve been practising my basics though which has helped a lot!

Yesterday afternoon, I asked this girl to practice some new patterns with me. I brought some CDs with patterns I downloaded from the Net along with some salsa mp3s.

We initially tried out some patterns but soon afterwards we found ourselves focusing on technique. We did a number of experiments. For instance, I lead a basic turn in 4 different ways, each time placing my hand in a different way. One of these times, I lead the turn with one finger. I asked for feedback and she told me that all of them felt nice and smooth except the “1 finger lead”. She hated it. It wasn’t comfortable for her and explained why. Actually, when I lead it, it felt OK. Guess I was wrong…We also concentrated on staying in slot (LA style), my partner has sort of a problem with this. Another thing we did was practise leader/follower positioning.

We danced for over 2 hours and really connected. It was great. It’s amazing the things you learn when you exchange feedback with your partner.

Salsachinita, why don’t you ask someone who you consider a good lead and a good friend to practice for an afternoon? I believe to improve our dancing we should focus on small and specific things, like hand placement, floor positioning, etc.

Regards,

danceguy

Believe me, I would LOVE to have someone I could do this kind of things with......!!! But it's really not so easy, since I've had to re-connect with people (a lot of ppl have joint the scene during my absence) who may not consider me 'advanced' enough (thus worthy of their time  ), or fairly new & totally intimidated by me  ! All the people I knew from the old days were either gone, turned pro, partnered etc.

Then there are those musician bros of mine whom I dearly love but they don't dance.......or those who would agree to praticing but had something else in mind  ........

I just did a search in the university catalog and found 35 titles...books, poetry..videos. I don't have much time. Can anyone suggest a few good books? I would say one, but that probably will be too hard the way you guys are raving about her.

I'd say do a video... hear her speak... then as you read her words you're able to hear her say them as well... she is truely is a remarkable woman.

In high school I read I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings... I'm most familier with that book... it's about her growing up... that helps give you an idea of who she is.

I found that if you can follow the music and basic step you can learn how to dance from video clips etc. I did a syncopated cross body break, a double rock crossbody break, a double turn coming from crossbody breaks back into closed position...for cha cha at the ballroom dance tonight...and more...all self-taught!! :D

We all were warned!!

Actually I lost two photos that I put up before the move, but I'm not complaining. They were of me dancing with Figen, but pretty poor shots as I have to rely on others photos. Somehow I never take picture with my own camera. [shrug.] Something I need to work on, just like I needed to break through a barrier to really dance... :)

I enjoy women who open themselves to the music and their partner, but then misunderstanding can happen. Has happened twice already. :( And then in the last one really recently...misunderstanding of expectations between dance and social relationships!!! :headwall:

A warm greeting to everyone at the new dance forums! :P

Wheee! Its nice to see the new server up and running. I've finally caught up on sleep (thanks Pygmalion)...and doing much better than I was the other day.

Sagitta - Sorry to hear about your romantic woes...I've found that whenever you find a particular person in your dance circle that tickles your fancy, you really have to take some time to observe them. After a fashion you may discover they just aren't your type, aren't available or don't share the interest...but it can be tough when you feel a real connection to them during a sensual dance. Very tough sometimes!

Then again I always say, if you can open your heart to feel love for someone and then feel pain if it doesn't work out, you've grown as a person. Remember those thoughts and hold onto them until someone comes along who will appreciate who you are, and is looking for the same. :)

Hmm, on that note, I'm still debating going to my local "V-Day Salsa dance" tonight as I wanted to take some time away from dancing.

Hmm, hmm, hmm...what to do....yikes...I have about 10 hours to make up my mind....Salsachinita are you still on Salsa strike? I wonder which one of us is going to end it first.

Very happy/excited thought:

I have been trying to increase traffic to my website for quite a while now. I found this AWESOME "web ring" thing and became a member. Be having this little link on my site, I'm part of a several different dance rings. As people visit other sites which are a part of the ring, they can access my site.

Okay, here's the cool part...when I first signed up with my web hosting site, it talked about receing monthly statisics. Well, I haven't gotten any and had no clue how to go about getting them. I was uploading some files to my site a few days ago and found this folder called STATS in my FTP. I loaded onto my machine and low and behold, it holds the monthly statistics for my site.

The really cool part...PEOPLE ARE USING MY SITE!!!!! I am SOOOOOO excited!!!

I just got back from a truly wonderful night of dancing. Firstly, I have no idea how many women I asked to dance tonight...as normally I can keep a record of this as its usually only 2 or 3. Tonight I only sat out one or two songs for 2 hours straight...and soon as one song ended, I went up to the nearest lady and asked her to dance!

I could almost hear Youngsta and Vince yelling at me:

"Get your butt over there and ask them! No hesitating, don't think about it - JUST ASK!"

I must say, it worked quite nicely. Thanks guys. :D

Hmm...and then taking Borikens advice...I just did my simple basics...very smooth lead, focusing on the lady and envisioning the dance like we were making love. This really got me to relax and enjoy the music in a way that I haven't been able to before.

Then right as I was getting a huge Salsa fix, my favorite song came on (Lluvia...perfect since its pouring rain here!) and I just fell into the zone and I felt like the lady was gliding through my hands. Of course that song sure did seem slow after all the fast ones that they usually play.

And to top it off, another thing happened tonight I have to share with DF:

I FINALLY got turned down for a dance!

I don't mean to have a swelled head, but this was the first time a lady has turned me down...ever! And to top it off, she gave me a lame excuse and then immediately went up and danced with the instructor. It bothered me for just a minute, then I got up and watched her dance and even clapped for her.

Of course, that's the last time she gets to dance with me, but her loss I say!

I don't know why, but I was beginning to get worried that I had some wild luck streak and that no one would ever say no. I'm quite relieved that someone finally broke the ice. 8)

Oh, and one more thing, a very beautiful woman that I had my eye on told me she was married in a casual conversation...and man was that a good thing to know. Saved me the embarassment of asking her out like I had wanted to!

Ok, enough gloating, but I'm in such a great mood.....may all of you have a great time out there as well! :P

NeoDevin

I'll add more about my day today... since it was fairly exciting for me. And I'll start at the beginning this time...

When I was little, I did tap, jazz, ballet, and ukrainian dancing. Somewhere in there, we did a group competition dance to the song "Little Shop of Horrors". I quit all dancing when I was like 5 or 6, and had completely forgotten about that dance until a few days ago I'm watching the movie with my roommates. When they played the theme song, I was like, "I did a dance to that when I was little". I've been planning for a while to go back to my old studio, and ask the manager if she knows where I could find some cheap ballroom shoes. Finally this morning I get some time when she'll actually be in the office. So I show up, I walk in and I say "Marie, I haven't seen you in ages" she kinda looks at me funny. I ask "You don't remember me do you?" Slowly her face lights up with recognition, "Devin Baillie!!!!" So this lady, who I haven't seen in more than 12 years, still recognizes me, and can tell me apart from my brother without having us even standing side by side. Anyways, she suggests a good shop with used dance shoes (aside: I ended up getting my standard shoes for $45 canadian). I go with her to check the back closet to see if they've got any that might fit, they don't. We get back to her office, and who's sitting there but one of the girls I'd done the "Little Shop of Horrors" dance with. I didn't remember her, but she remembered me (one of the advantages of being the only guy in a class of 15 or so girls). She didn't recognize me, but when Marie told her who I was, she remembered. She even remembered the final pose in the dance, lol. We were talking about what dances I used to do, and I mentioned I'd like to get back into tap. Marie is sitting at her computer, turns around and tells me, we have an adult beginner class on monday nights. Turns out the timing fits pretty much perfectly with the rest of my monday schedule (my lindy class ends at 7, tap begins at 9, and it's across town). So I start tap again on monday. If I remember enough, and they think I can keep up, I'll be switching to the slightly more advanced class on thursdays (which should also fit with my schedule perfectly). So yeah, strange coincidence that a few days after I hear the song for the first time in 10+ years, I run into one of the girls I danced it with. And lots of memories back...

I didn't think your post was a rant. I thought it was a beautiful example of the cycle of life. What's the probability that, after so many years, "coincidence" would bring you back to the people and things you knew long ago, and in such a positive way? Thr older I get, the less I believe in coincidence. I think everything happens for a reason, and in its own time. For some reason, you were meant to see these people again.

I could give examples in my own life of how I see this is true (but I won't, since this thread is about you. )

I REALLY needed to get my salsa fix (over reasons I won't bore you with) when I hit the club on Sunday night. I grew up with the resident band members there (so it's like home to me 8) ), playing Latin Jazz with a few cool salsa dura numbers. Lots of descarga.

I ran into one of my old social dance partners who hasn't been out for ages :D ! We got into a frenzy, riding on the amazing energy of the band.

Then it happened. All of a sudden I was in mid air  ! I shut my eyes then landed perfectly on beat. For a spilt second (when I was up there) everything was still.........the cheers & clapping brought me back...

Afterwards I spoke to my partner, he didn't know how it happened either. It must have been one of those moments 8) ............

you mean... they're leading and you're following? ;) works for me!

I never lead......! No idea how  !

What I really wanted to find out from you folks were: how do you find dancing with a momentum based lead as opposed t a more controlled one? Given their proficiency level is about the same......?

I've done a little lindy. And these memories are fast fading. :( Momentum is used a lot, but then it was controlled momentum for me. I think I know what you are taking about when you say momentum salsa vs controlled salsa dancing, though.

Yes. I sleep, I work, I eat, and I have a life. But the truth is that dance forums fills a spiritual need for me -- the need to give back. Ah Shelley, you know I would never hit someone in anger...MA teaches us to become less violent, and so I have become. Back in my college days I did kick someone's door in (and a few walls)...umm...long story, but trust me, they deserved it! :P

In fact, before I got into dancing, one of my Qi Gong teachers used to have a "free dance" time in class and a couple of folks would break out drums and we'd just go wild.

People usually never got near me...I had my own style of dancing...but it involved lots of punches and kicks...come to think of it probably would have been lethal to anyone seeking a partner dance.

Of the 27 people I've got programmed into my phone, there are 12 different area codes. (As a frame of reference, the entire state of Vermont only has one area code.)
