Should I develop a web site for our Chapter? by Craig Inners
I am sure you have pondered this question several times
but the English language has two words that should be band
"Simple" and "Easy"!
Simple and Easy just like your first dance lesson you ever
took was it Simple and Easy? No it was hard.
I am a software developer with several years of experience
developing desk top applications. I made my first attempt
at developing a web site for our chapter and it was like
trying to learn a beginner steps for to compete at
Nationals what a disaster.
Several weeks went by as I struggled finally I was
finished developing the web site only to find out the site
could not be hosted.
What to do now? I called the hosting company and they
suggested I redo the entire web site using Microsoft's
Front Page. I never used this software before and did not
want to take the time to learn it after all I do have a
life, I think. Calling the hosting company back they gave
me a link to another product they offer
(sign up for trial) this is a template driven development site.
What does this mean? You create your page or pages view
the edit them approve them then publish them to the
internet you will need a domain name Haven Internet
Services, Inc. can set this up for you. Each page is step
by step instructions or a video clip you can view to help
you is it Easy? And YES Simple YES Ok put these words back
into the English language. Haven Internet Services, Inc.
offers a free 15 day trial of the software and a discount
to non-profit organizations that's us! They will also
offer discounts to chapter members on web sites they
develop for your personal use.
Our domain name and hosting fees (pre pay by the year and
the 13th month of hosting is free) had been paid for. I
started developing our site from scratch Friday evening
and six hours later I had the site ready to go calling
Haven Internet Services, Inc. 866.864.2836 (Toll Free)
they made the necessary adjustments to allow the web site
to be viewed by the public. Check out the site
www.DanceInYork.com
Consider the fact the US Postal Service is about to raise
their rates and how many times have you attended a chapter
dance where the chapter president announced a change in a
dance time, location or cancellation of an upcoming event?
How do you let your dancers know about this change if they
are not at your dance?
Today we live in a world of computers we might not like it
but it is estimated there is 1 computer in every household
across the great nation of ours Yes grandma and grandpa
are on the internet exchanging photos and email with the
family.
Should I develop a web sit for our Chapter? Yes go ahead
and build your web site or even upgrade your existing site
it will be worth it in the long run! You will produce
faster information and overall cost is less expensive than
US Postal Service. Currently we have 156 chapters and some
of them have no web site I invite all chapters to check
out.
